Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 2, White Sox 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Run-producing singles by Tommy Davis and Jim Fuller in the eighth inning carried the Orioles to a 2-1 victory over the White Sox behind the five-hit pitching of Ross Grimsley. The White Sox scored in the first on a walk to Pat Kelly, single by Ken Henderson and sacrifice fly by Ron Santo. The Orioles were limited to three hits by Skip Pitlock in the first seven innings, but when Mark Belanger walked to open the eighth, the White Sox brought in Terry Forster, who failed in relief. Paul Blair sacrificed and Bobby Grich was hit by a pitch. The Orioles' two runs then followed on hits by Davis and Fuller.

Angels 4, Red Sox 3 at California (night game):
Nolan Ryan struck out 19 batters in 13 innings before giving way to Barry Raziano, who gained his first victory of the season when the Angels scored in the 15th to defeat the Red Sox, 4-3. Ryan walked 10, including four in the fourth to hand the Red Sox their first run. The Angels came back with three in their half of the fourth, but the Red Sox tied score in the ninth when Rick Miller walked and Carl Yastrzemski homered. However in the 15th, Mickey Rivers singled off Tiant, who pitched the route for the Red Sox, and scored the winning run from first base on a double by Denny Doyle.

Twins 8, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Capping a seven-run outburst, Eric Soderholm smashed a grand-slam homer in the third inning as the Twins breezed to an 8-2 victory over the Indians. Singles by Glenn Borgmann, Luis Gomez, Jerry Terrell and Larry Hisle accounted for the first two runs before Tony Oliva and Bobby Darwin were retired. Steve Braun then singled to drive in another run before Craig Kusick walked to load the bases, setting the stage for Soderholm's slam off Ken Sanders in relief of Bob Johnson. Soderholm also singled for his fifth RBI of the night in the fifth inning. Charlie Spikes and Dave Duncan homered for the Indians, who collected only five hits off Joe Decker.

Royals 4, Tigers 3 at Detroit (night game):
Consecutive homers by John Mayberry and Hal McRae in the fifth inning produced the Royals' tying and winning runs in a 4-3 victory over the Tigers. McRae batted in the Royals' initial run with a double in the first. The Tigers collected six of their eight hits off Steve Busby in the first three innings and took a 3-1 lead, but the Royals pulled within one run in the fourth on a scoring single by George Brett.

Yankees 5, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Designated-hitter Bill Sudakis batted in three runs with a homer and double in support of Dick Tidrow's pitching as the Yankees defeated the Athletics, 5-1. Sudakis hit his homer after a single by Thurman Munson in the third inning. Before the stanza ended, the Yankees added another tally on singles by Chris Chambliss, Fernando Gonzalez and Gene Michael. Sudakis followed with his double in the third, driving in Munson, and later scored himself on a sacrifice fly by Chambliss. The A's picked up their run off Tidrow in the fifth on a pass to Reggie Jackson and singles by Gene Tenace and Ted Kubiak.

Rangers 7, Brewers 2 at Texas (night game):
Cesar Tovar and Toby Harrah batted in five runs between them to lead the Rangers to a 7-2 victory over the Brewers. Harrah knocked in the Rangers' first run with a single in the fourth inning. A double by Lenny Randle, sacrifice by Jim Sundberg and squeeze bunt by Cesar Tovar added a tally in the fifth. The Rangers then clinched the outcome with three runs in the sixth. Jeff Burroughs doubled, advanced on an infield out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Harrah. Two walks around a single by Randle loaded the bases with two out and Tovar then singled, driving in two runs. Jim Bibby, who pitched 5 1/3 innings, received credit for his ninth victory, matching the righthander's entire 1973 total. Steve Foucault, who relieved Bibby, picked up his sixth save.

Braves 6, Cardinals 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Hank Aaron homered off longtime adversary Bob Gibson in the second inning and drove in another run with a double in the third to start the Braves off to a 6-1 victory over the Cardinals. The homer was Aaron's 11th of the season and 724th of his career. Roric Harrison, who pitched the route for the Braves, joined in the attack with a two-run homer in the sixth. After the Cardinals picked up an unearned run on an error by Rowland Office in the eighth, the Braves loaded the bases in their half and counted their last two tallies on a walk to Darrell Evans and sacrifice fly by Dusty Baker.

Cubs 10, Astros 7 at Chicago (day game):
After Burt Hooton failed to take advantage of a big lead, Jim Todd relieved and received credit for his first major league victory when the Cubs defeated the Astros, 10-7. Hooton was a better batter than pitcher, rapping a double and single in the third inning during a seven-run outburst by the Cubs. Rick Monday, Jose Cardenal, Andre Thornton and Dave Rosello also doubled as the Cubs took an 8-3 lead. However the Astros came back with four runs off Hooton in the fourth, three scoring on a homer by Bob Watson. Todd relieved and gave up only one single in 4 1/3 innings before being removed for a pinch-hitter in the eighth when the Cubs added their last two runs on a bases loaded single by Don Kessinger. Horacio Pina pitched the ninth to complete the game.

Reds 7, Phillies 4 at Cincinnati (night game):
The Reds erupted for six runs in the third inning, making it easy for Don Gullett to defeat the Phillies, 7-4, for his fifth straight victory. A double by Joe Morgan set off the stanza. Singles by Johnny Bench, Tony Perez, Terry Crowley and Cesar Geronimo, together with a wild throw by Ron Schueler on a bunt by Dan Driessen, followed to produce the first four runs. After a sacrifice by Dave Concepcion, Pete Rose capped the inning with a two-run single. Mike Schmidt hit two homers to account for three of the Phillies' runs.

Padres 5, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
Derrel Thomas drove in four runs with an inside-the-park homer and single to lead the Padres to a 5-4 victory over the Expos. The Padres scored their first run in the second inning when Ernie McAnally walked Bob Barton with the bases loaded. In the third, Willie McCovey walked, Johnny Grubb doubled and Thomas followed with his homer on a 400-foot smash to center field. The Padres then added what proved to be the deciding run in the fifth when McCovey walked and Thomas singled. Ron Fairly hit a two-run homer for the Expos.

Dodgers 3, Mets 2 at New York (night game):
With last-out help from Mike Marshall, Tommy John became the N. L.'s first 10-game winner of the season when the Dodgers defeated the Mets, 3-2. Tom Paciorek batted in two runs for the Dodgers, one with a triple in the second inning and another with a single in the sixth. The Dodgers added what proved to be the deciding tally in the ninth off Tug McGraw, who made his first appearance for the Mets since May 15. Steve Yeager singled and advanced on a sacrifice by John. Yeager then was thrown out at third on a grounder by Davey Lopes, but Lopes reached second on the play and scored on a single by Bill Russell. In the Mets' half, Cleon Jones hit a two-run homer before Marshall took over and struck out Rusty Staub to end the game.

Pirates 4, Giants 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Yielding only four hits, Dock Ellis pitched the Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the Giants. Ellis also beat the Giants, 5-2, June 8, but needed last-out help from Bruce Kison. This time, the righthander accomplished the job without assistance. Willie Stargell homered for the Pirates in the second inning. After the Giants tied the score with an unearned run in the third, the Pirates broke away against Ron Bryant with three runs in the fifth. Rennie Stennett doubled, Gene Clines singled and both scored when Richie Zisk doubled. Zisk took third after a fly by Stargell and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Al Oliver. Chris Speier homered for the Giants in the sixth.
