Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, White Sox 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Dave McNally hurled the route for the Orioles, allowing only four hits, and was rewarded with a victory when Boog Powell homered in the 11th inning to beat the White Sox, 4-3. The White Sox used a single by Ron Santo, two walks and a sacrifice fly by Ed Herrmann for a run in the fifth. Bobby Grich singled and Tommy Davis doubled for the tying tally in the sixth, but the White Sox went ahead in the eighth, 3-1, when Herrmann singled and Bucky Dent homered. The Orioles rallied to knot the count with aid of an error by Dick Allen in the ninth. Grich and Davis led off with singles, bringing Cy Acosta into game in relief of Stan Bahnsen. Allen dropped a pickoff throw and Grich scored on the error. Enos Cabell, running for Davis, advanced to second and scored the tying run on a single by Elrod Hendricks.

Red Sox 5, Angels 3 at California (night game):
Cecil Cooper, who struck out six times in the previous night's 15-inning game, rebounded with four hits in five trips as the Red Sox defeated the Angels, 5-3. Cooper and Carlton Fisk, who chipped in with three hits, each scored twice. Carl Yastrzemski batted in three runs with a pair of singles. Bill Lee, who started for the Red Sox, was rapped for 10 hits but got through five scoreless innings before quitting because of a blister on his pitching hand. Diego Segui gave up four hits in the last four innings, but the Angels were able to score once on a wild pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth and twice more on a single by Mickey Rivers and an error in the eighth.

Indians 5, Twins 1 at Cleveland (day game):
Doubles by Oscar Gamble and George Hendrick and homers by Jack Brohamer and Dave Duncan accounted for the Indians' runs in a 5-1 victory over the Twins. Gamble's two-bagger, following singles by Brohamer and Charlie Spikes, produced two runs in the first inning. John Lowenstein and Spikes singled and Hendrick doubled for a run in the third. Brohamer hit his homer in the fourth and Duncan in the sixth. Steve Kline, who started for the Indians, allowed only three hits before leaving the mound with a pulled muscle in his right shoulder after six innings. Fred Beene finished. The Twins' run in the fifth was unearned on an error by Ed Crosby, a wild pitch and single by Steve Braun.

Tigers 11, Royals 9 at Detroit (day game):
Coming back after the Royals scored four runs in the eighth inning, the Tigers rallied for five in the ninth to gain an 11-9 victory. The Royals loaded the bases in the eighth on a walk to John Mayberry, single by Hal McRae, who took second on the throw to third, and intentional pass to Jim Wohlford. Al Cowens and Fran Healy followed with two-run singles to put the Royals ahead, 9-6. The Tigers started the scoring in the ninth with an RBI double by Al Kaline. Gene Garber, relieving with one away, fanned Bill Freehan. The Royals then switched to Joe Hoerner, who made his 400th major league appearance and wound up with the defeat. Marvin Lane singled to greet Hoerner, driving in Kaline, and Gene Lamont also singled. Marty Pattin then took over to face Aurelio Rodriguez, who slammed a three-run homer to win the game for the Tigers.

A's 9, Yankees 1 at Oakland (day game):
A grand slam by Joe Rudi and three-run homer by Sal Bando powered the Athletics to a 9-1 victory over the Yankees. Vida Blue yielded the Yankees' run in the first inning on a double by Elliott Maddox and single by Bobby Murcer. Rudi hit his grand slam off Doc Medich in the third after the A's loaded the bases on singles by Dick Green and Bill North and pass to Bando. Bando's homer came in the fifth and followed singles by Angel Mangual and Reggie Jackson. Green and North drove in the other runs with singles in the sixth as the A's snapped their four-game losing streak.

Rangers 5, Brewers 2 at Texas (night game):
Sparked by Jim Fregosi, who hit a homer, the Rangers scored three runs in the seventh inning to gain a 5-2 victory over the Brewers, who went down to their sixth straight defeat. George Scott singled and Darrell Porter homered to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead in the top half of the seventh. After Fregosi led off the Rangers' half with his homer to tie the score, Lenny Randle singled and advanced to second on a poor throw back to the infield by Johnny Briggs. Jim Sundberg bunted and Randle beat Clyde Wright's throw to third. Cesar Tovar singled to score Randle and Alex Johnson followed with a single to drive in Sundberg.

Braves 7, Cardinals 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Breaking away for five runs in first inning, the Braves entertained a Bat Night crowd of 43,572 by defeating the Cardinals, 7-1. In their getaway, the Braves filled the bases with singles by Ralph Garr and Darrell Evans and walk to Dusty Baker. Hank Aaron singled, driving in two runs. Mike Lum and Davey Johnson followed with singles, each plating a run. Craig Robinson made it 5-0 with a sacrifice fly. The Braves added their other pair in the third. After Lum doubled and Johnny Oates walked, Robinson singled to score Lum and when Lou Brock fumbled the ball in left field, Oates also crossed the plate. The Cardinals scored their run off Buzz Capra in the eighth and had the bases loaded with one out when Joe Niekro relieved and induced Mike Tyson to ground into a double play.

Astros 8, Cubs 7 at Chicago (day game):
Instead of being wiped out when the Cubs erupted for seven runs in the fourth inning, the Astros battled back to gain an 8-7 victory. The Astros scored twice in the top half of the fourth before the Cubs sent 11 men to bat in their big inning. Bill Madlock and Billy Williams each homered with a man on base. The Astros picked up a run in the seventh, but still were far behind going into the eighth. Bob Watson began the inning by drawing a walk and stopping at third on a double by Johnny Edwards. After Horacio Pina relieved Steve Stone, Doug Rader doubled, driving in Watson and Edwards. Tommy Helms followed with a single to score Rader. Cliff Johnson then batted for Fred Scherman and came through with a homer to produce the tying and winning runs.

Phillies 5, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
An Oldtimers' Day crowd of 35,732 saw the Reds collect only five hits off Jim Lonborg and lose to the Phillies, 5-2. The Phillies bunched a safe bunt by Larry Bowa, walk to Mike Schmidt, error by Joe Morgan on an infield hit by Willie Montanez and single by Del Unser for two runs in the first inning. Dave Cash doubled, advanced on an infield out and scored on a sacrifice fly by Schmidt in third. Lonborg doubled and batted in one of the Phillies' two runs in the fourth. The Reds got on the scoreboard with a homer by Johnny Bench in the sixth and added their last run on a triple by Dan Driessen and single by Terry Crowley in the ninth.

Expos 6, Padres 4 at Montreal (night game):
John Montague, who allowed only one hit in 4 2/3 innings of relief, received credit for his first major league victory when the Expos defeated the Padres, 6-4. Mike Torrez, who started for the Expos, was removed with one out in the third when the Padres took a 3-2 lead. After Montague took over, the Expos tied the score in their half of the third with a double by Ken Singleton and single by Jim Cox. Then in the fifth, after Singleton and Bob Bailey walked, Cox drove them home with a double to break the tie. Montague was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the seventh when the Expos added another run. Chuck Taylor relieved, but Tom Walker had to take over in the ninth to register the final out of the game.

Mets 4, Dodgers 1 at New York (day game):
Jerry Koosman, who had lost six straight times to the Dodgers since beating them last on August 22, 1969, held his jinx club to seven hits and pitched the Mets to a 4-1 victory. The Dodgers scored their run in the first inning on a double by Davey Lopes and single by Bill Russell. The Mets came back with two runs in their half on a pass to Don Hahn, single by Felix Millan, sacrifice by George Theodore, infield out by Cleon Jones and single by Rusty Staub. A homer by Staub added a run in the fourth and the final tally followed in the fifth when Hahn doubled and Millan singled.

Pirates 3, Giants 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Rennie Stennett drove in all of the Pirates' runs with a double and triple to beat the Giants, 3-2, in a game called after 8 2/3 innings because of rain. Gary Matthews accounted for both of the Giants' runs with a double in the first inning and single in the sixth. Stennett doubled a run home in the Pirates' half of the sixth. Richie Zisk and Al Oliver singled in the eighth. Ed Ott ran for Zisk. After both runners moved up on an infield out, Stennett hit his game-deciding triple. Daryl Patterson, who joined the Pirates the night before from Charleston (International), was the winner in relief.
