Today's scores and summaries:
Orioles 10, Twins 1 at Baltimore (night game):
Bobby Grich became the first Baltimore player to hit three homers in one game at Memorial Stadium as the Orioles trounced the Twins, 10-1. Grich all hit his homers in consecutive times at bat, starting with a three-run blow off Joe Decker in the second inning. After adding a solo shot off Decker in the fifth, Grich tagged Tom Burgmeier for a two-run drive in the seventh. Tommy Davis also homered for the Orioles.
Angels 3, Yankees 0 at California (night game):
Three unearned runs in the first inning enabled the Angels to defeat the Yankees, 3-0, behind the five-hit pitching of Nolan Ryan and Skip Lockwood. Ryan had to leave the mound after six innings when a blister developed on a finger of his pitching hand. Lockwood gained his first save of the season. With one out in the first, Denny Doyle was safe on an error by Gene Michael. After Leroy Stanton was retired, Frank Robinson singled and when Bobby Murcer bobbled the ball, Doyle scored from first base. Robinson advanced on the error and crossed the plate on a single by Joe Lahoud. Paul Schaal went out, but John Doherty doubled to drive in the third run.
White Sox 7, Indians 3 at Cleveland (night game):
Jim Kaat gained the 200th victory of his major league career with the backing of six homers by the White Sox, who defeated the Indians, 7-3. Jorge Orta and Dick Allen each hit two homers, while Carlos May and Ken Henderson added one apiece. George Hendrick rapped a pair for the Indians. The victory was Kaat's sixth of the season and 10th with the White Sox since being acquired from the Twins in August, 1973. The veteran lefthander previously won one game with the former Washington Senators and 189 in 12-plus seasons with the Twins.
Royals 7, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
Paul Splittorff retired 21 batters in succession and allowed only two hits in the course of pitching the Royals to a 7-0 victory over the Brewers in the first game of a scheduled twi-night doubleheader. The second game was prevented by rain after Amos Otis had given the Royals a 1-0 lead with a homer in the first inning. However, Otis had homer that counted and John Mayberry also hit for the circuit in Splittorff's victory.
Red Sox 6, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
An infrequently used member of the Red Sox staff, Roger Moret made his first start since May 11 and only his third in 11 appearances and posted his first victory of the season, defeating the Athletics, 6-1. Last year Moret started 15 times, relieved in 15 games and posted 13 victories. The A's scored their only run off the lefthander on a single by Jesus Alou, walk to Angel Mangual and single by Sal Bando in the fifth inning. Six different players accounted for Red Sox RBIs.
Rangers 6, Tigers 0 at Texas (night game):
Allowing only two hits, Jim Bibby pitched the Rangers to a 6-0 victory over the Tigers. The Rangers scored in three-run bursts in the first and second innings. In the first, Cesar Tovar singled, Dave Nelson walked and both scored on a double by Alex Johnson, who continued home to tally the third run when Ed Brinkman made a wild throw in handling the relay from the outfield. A single by Duke Sims, pass to Lenny Randle, singles by Tovar and Nelson and an error by Willie Horton added the three other runs in the second.
Padres 9, Cubs 4 at Chicago (day game):
Helping himself at bat with a single and double, Freisleben gained the victory with 7 2/3 innings of pitching as the Padres defeated the Cubs, 9-4. Freisleben batted in one run with his single in the second and scored after hitting a double in the fifth. The Padres expanded their lead to 7-1 with three runs in the sixth on a single by Johnny Grubb, triple by Derrel Thomas, two errors and a double steal by Rich Morales and Bobby Tolan before the Cubs hit two homers in the eighth to kayo Freisleben. Bill Madlock rapped the first round-tripper and, after a pass to Rick Monday, Chris Ward followed with a homer, his first in the major leagues. The Padres insured their victory with two runs in the ninth on singles by Dave Roberts, Dave Winfield and Willie McCovey and infield out by Grubb.
Expos 2, Reds 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Ernie McAnally pitched a two-hitter and was the winner in a duel with Clay Kirby when Jim Cox homered in the ninth inning to give the Expos a 2-1 victory over the Reds. The Expos scored their initial run in the first on a pass to Mike Jorgensen, sacrifice by Larry Lintz and single by Ken Singleton. The Reds' run followed in the third when Kirby walked, took second on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on a double by Pete Rose.
Braves 6, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
Ivan Murrell, playing in place of Hank Aaron, who was given the night off, hit a bases-loaded triple and his first homer of the season to lead the Braves to a 6-1 victory over the Mets. Murrell hit his triple in the third inning when the Braves scored five runs and added his homer in the sixth.
Astros 1, Phillies 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
A tremendous relief performance by Mike Cosgrove was rewarded when Tommy Helms hit a homer in the second inning to enable the Astros' rookie lefthander to beat the Phillies, 1-0. Dave Roberts started for the Astros and gave up two hits with one out in the first inning before pulling his shoulder muscle. Cosgrove relieved and, pitching the rest of the way, allowed only two hits on safe bunts by Willie Montanez and Ron Schueler.
Pirates 2, Dodgers 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Dave Giusti, making his first start since May 17, 1970, after 255 consecutive relief appearances, pitched seven innings and allowed only five hits as the Pirates defeated the Dodgers, 2-0. Bruce Kison relieved in the eighth, but the Pirates also had to call on Daryl Patterson in the ninth to put down a Dodger threat. The Pirates, in defeating Tommy John, scored a run in the second inning on a single by Richie Zisk and double by Bob Robertson. Their other run came off Mike Marshall in the eighth on a single by Kison, sacrifice by Rennie Stennett and single by Gene Clines.
Cardinals 3, Giants 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Alan Foster, who was relegated to the Cardinals' bullpen after losing four decisions, drew the starting assignment and responded by pitching a five-hitter to shut out the Giants, 3-0. Lou Brock observed his 35th birthday by hitting two singles, stealing his 41st and 42nd bases of the season and scoring two runs.
