[DH] Indians 11, Red Sox 0 (day game) / Red Sox 8, Indians 3 at Boston (night game):
Gaylord Perry allowed only four hits and won his 13th straight game, pitching the Indians to an 11-0 victory, but the Red Sox came back to beat Gaylord's brother Jim, 6-3. Separate-admission day and night games attracted a total of 49,405 paid. The Indians piled up 20 hits in support of Gaylord Perry. Frank Duffy collected four hits including a homer, and drove in five runs. Dave Duncan accounted for three RBIs with a bases-loaded double. In the night game, the Indians jumped off to a 3-0 lead, getting two runs on a homer by Charlie Spikes and another on a triple by Oscar Gamble and an error. The Red Sox got one run back in the second and and then knocked out Jim Perry while scoring four times in the third. A walk to Dwight Evans, single by Carl Yastrzemski and pass to Carlton Fisk loaded the bases. Evans beat the throw home on a grounder by Rico Petrocelli. Juan Beniquez and Mario Guerrero followed with run-scoring singles before Tommy Harper added a tally with a sacrifice fly. Rick Burleson homered for the Red Sox in the sixth. Roger Moret pitched four scoreless innings in relief of Reggie Cleveland, who had to leave the game after being hit on the left hand by a line drive.
Orioles 7, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Bobby Grich batted in three runs and Tommy Davis accounted for two to support the pitching of Ross Grimsley as the Orioles defeated the Brewers, 7-2. Robin Yount accounted for the Brewers' runs with a homer in the third inning. Grich hit a sacrifice fly to break a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning and knocked in two runs with a double in the seventh. Davis clinched the decision with a single that produced the final two tallies in the ninth.
White Sox 3, Twins 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Jim Kaat was the winner of a five-hit duel with Vic Albury when Brian Downing singled and Jorge Orta homered in the 10th inning to give the White Sox a 3-1 victory over the Twins. The White Sox counted their initial run in the first on a walk to Downing, safe bunt by Jorge Orta, a wild pitch and infield out by Ron Santo. The Twins' tying run scored in the eighth on singles by Eric Soderholm and Steve Brye around a sacrifice by Glenn Borgmann.
Tigers 4, Yankees 1 at New York (day game):
Jim Northrup scored the tie-breaking run on an error in the ninth inning and Willie Horton added two runs with a bases-loaded single to clinch the Tigers' 4-1 victory over the Yankees. Singles by Bill Sudakis and Thurman Munson and a groundout by Fernando Gonzalez produced the Yankees' run in the second. Aurelio Rodriguez singled and Jerry Moses tripled for the tying tally in the sixth. With one out in the ninth, Northrup walked and took third on a single by Ben Oglivie. Bill Freehan then grounded to third baseman Graig Nettles, whose throw home hit Northrup in the back as the Tiger baserunner slid across the place. Oglivie and Freehan each took an extra base on the error and, after an intentional pass to Rodriguez, Horton hit his single.
A's 3, Royals 2 at Oakland (day game):
A walk with the bases loaded in the ninth inning handed the Athletics a 3-2 victory over the Royals. The A's scored their first two runs, both unearned, in the third before the Royals came up with a matching pair off Ken Holtzman in the fourth on a single by Cookie Rojas, double by Amos Otis, a wild pitch and single by Jim Wohlford. Sal Bando doubled to lead off the ninth for the A's and stopped at third on a single by Reggie Jackson. Paul Splittorff then walked Joe Rudi intentionally to load the bases before leaving the game in favor of Gene Garber, who passed Gene Tenace to force in the A's winning run.
Angels 7, Rangers 4 at Texas (night game):
The Angels knocked out Jim Bibby in the second inning while scoring five runs and defeated the Rangers, 7-4. Tommy McCraw walked and crossed the plate on singles by Leroy Stanton and Paul Schaal to start the Angels' scoring. After a pass to Ellie Rodriguez loaded the bases. Mickey Rivers drove in two runs with a double. Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch and when Bibby, covering the plate, dropped the throw from catcher Charlie Sands, who had retrieved the ball, Rivers also slid home with the Angels' fifth run. Schaal homered in the fifth. Nolan Ryan, pitching for the Angels, struck out 10. Jeff Burroughs, who collected three of the Rangers' nine hits, drove in three of their runs.
Pirates 6, Cubs 0 at Chicago (day game):
Posting his third shutout of the season, Ken Brett pitched the Pirates to a 6-0 victory over the Cubs. Richie Zisk provided the southpaw with the only run he needed by hitting a homer in the second inning, but the Pirates proceeded to ice the decision with four runs in the fourth. Brett capped the outburst by driving in a pair with a single. The Pirates' last tally came on singles by Manny Sanguillen, Kurt Bevacqua and Rennie Stennett in the eighth.
Reds 3, Braves 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Joe Morgan hit a homer and sacrifice fly to produce all of the Reds' runs in a 3-2 victory over the Braves. After a single by Hank Aaron gave the Braves their initial run in the first inning, Cesar Geronimo singled in the Reds' half and Morgan hit his homer. Darrell Evans tied the score with a circuit clout in the third, but the Reds came back again, scoring the deciding run in their half on singles by Pete Rose and Geronimo and Morgan's sacrifice fly.
Padres 6, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Derrel Thomas and Fred Kendall batted in two runs apiece and Willie McCovey hit a homer to lead the Padres to a 6-2 victory over the Astros. McCovey's homer started the scoring in the fourth inning. A single by Thomas and sacrifice fly by Dave Roberts added two runs to the Padres' total in the sixth. Thomas accounted for his second RBI with a single in the seventh and Kendall drove in two runs with a double. Cesar Cedeno doubled and Bob Watson homered in the Astros' half of the seventh. The Astros threatened in the ninth when Watson and Lee May singled with none out. Vicente Romo relieved Randy Jones and retired the next two batters before walking Tommy Helms to load the bases. Dave Tomlin then stepped into the hot spot and struck out pinch-hitter Denis Menke to save the game.
Dodgers 3, Giants 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
After Jim Wynn's second homer of the game tied the score in the ninth inning, Joe Ferguson hit for the circuit in the 10th to give the Dodgers a 3-2 victory over the Giants. In a virtual duplicate of the previous night's game, which the Dodgers also won in 10 innings on a homer by Bill Buckner, Mike Marshall was the winner in relief and Elias Sosa was the loser on a gopher pitch. Wynn hit his first homer of the game in the opening inning. The Giants tied the score in the second on singles by Ed Goodson and Gary Thomasson around an infield out and took the lead in the sixth when Garry Maddox walked and raced home on a double by Goodson. Wynn's tying homer came off Jim Barr with one out in the ninth. Steve Barber relieved and finished the frame before going out for a pinch-hitter. Ferguson was the first batter to face Sosa in the 10th.
[DH] Phillies 5, Mets 2 (day game) / Phillies 8, Mets 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
Ron Schueler pitched a five-hitter in the opener to end a personal five-game losing streak and Wayne Twitchell, making his first start of the season, was the winner of the nightcap with help from Jesus Hernaiz as the Phillies defeated the Mets in a twi-night doubleheader, 5-2 and 8-5. The Phils made quick work of Harry Parker in the first game, starting with three runs in the first inning on a single by Larry Bowa, double by Del Unser, triple by Mike Schmidt and infield out by Tommy Hutton. Parker was kayoed in the second when the Phils added a run on a single by Willie Montanez, sacrifice by Schueler and single by Dave Cash. Montanez doubled and scored on a single by Bob Boone in the fourth before the Mets picked up their pair in the sixth on a single by Wayne Garrett and homer by Rusty Staub. The Phillies enjoyed a pair of four-run innings in the nightcap. In the second, Bill Robinson hit a homer, Cash doubled to drive in another run and Bowa accounted for two with a single. The Phillies then went to work for four more runs in the fifth on a double by Schmidt, singles by Robinson and Mike Anderson, a balk by Bob Apodaca and singles by Montanez and Cash. Ken Boswell and John Milner hit homers for the Mets.
Cardinals 4, Expos 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Lynn McGlothen became the N. L.'s second 10-game winner of the season, joining Tommy John of the Dodgers, when the Cardinals scored three unearned runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Expos, 4-3. Before coming to the Cards, McGlothen won a total of only nine games in two years of partial service with the Red Sox. The Expos had a homer by Ken Singleton in taking a 3-1 lead, with the Cards' run coming on a round-tripper by Ted Simmons. In the seventh, Ken Reitz was safe on an error by Ron Hunt and Jim Dwyer hit a pinch-single. Reggie Smith, batting for McGlothen, lifted a fly to left fielder Bob Bailey, who dropped the ball, allowing Reitz to score. With first base open Steve Rogers walked Lou Brock intentionally. When the Expos' starter threw three balls to Ted Sizemore, John Montague relieved and completed the pass, forcing in the Cards' tying run. Montague's next pitch hit Simmons to force in Tom Heintzelman, who ran for Smith.
