Today's scores and summaries:
Tigers 2, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (night game):
In a meeting of two ace lefthanders, Mickey Lolich pitched his 11th straight complete game and gained his fifth victory in succession, while Mike Cuellar was stopped on his nine-game winning streak as the Tigers defeated the Orioles, 2-0. Cuellar pitched only three innings before being tossed out of the game in an argument with plate umpire Russ Goetz. In the third inning, Al Kaline tripled with two out and scored on a single by Willie Horton. Bill Freehan doubled, Horton stopping at third. Cuellar then walked both Aurelio Rodriguez and Jim Northrup, forcing in Horton. Cuellar beefed over the call on one of his pitches to Northrup and continued to squawk as he left the mound, leading to his ejection. Manager Earl Weaver, who joined the dispute, also was banished.
White Sox 10, Royals 9 at Kansas City (night game):
A seesaw game that saw both clubs fail to hold leads finally was decided in the 12th inning when Bill Sharp scored to give the White Sox a 10-9 victory over the Royals. The White Sox started the game with two runs on a double by Ken Henderson, but the Royals came back to count five times on six straight hits, including a double by Hal McRae. Dick Allen homered with a man on base for the White Sox in the third and McRae countered with a solo swat for the Royals, but the White Sox took an 8-6 lead with four runs in the sixth. Bill Melton hit a two-run homer and, after the White Sox loaded the bases, Henderson drove in two runs with a single. The Royals knotted the count in the eighth with singles by McRae and Fran Healy, a forceout on which McRae scored, and triple by Fred Patek. Sharp singled in the 10th, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Bucky Dent, but the Royals kept the game going in their half with a double by Healy and single by Al Cowens. However in the 12th, after Sharp singled again, Ed Herrmann bunted and both runners were safe on a fielder's choice. Dent sacrificed and when Melton followed with a high hopper to shortstop, Sharp was able to score the winning run for the White Sox.
A's 6, Angels 1 at Oakland (night game):
Catfish Hunter joined the ranks of the league's 10-game winners by pitching the Athletics to a 6-1 victory over the Angels. The defeat was the 11th for Frank Tanana, who leads the league in losses. Sal Bando drove in two runs with a double in the third inning and Gene Tenace homered in the fifth to lead the A's attack. The Angels' lone run came in the second when Joe Lahoud singled, took third on a single by Leroy Stanton and scored on a double play grounder.
Rangers 7, Twins 3 at Texas (night game):
Jeff Burroughs and Mike Hargrove each collected three hits and drove in two runs apiece to lead the Rangers to a 7-3 victory over the Twins. Singles by Burroughs and Hargrove produced two of the Rangers' three runs in the fourth inning. Burroughs doubled and scored on a two-bagger by Hargrove when the Rangers added three more runs in the sixth. Burroughs homered for the Rangers' last run in the seventh. Steve Braun had a round-tripper for the Twins and Rod Carew, who had four hits in five trips, plated their other run with a double.
Mets 5, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
Hitting his first homer of the season, Ed Kranepool drove in three runs to help Jerry Koosman pitch the Mets to a 5-1 victory over the Cubs. The Mets scored once on singles by Ken Boswell, Don Hahn and Ted Martinez in the second inning before Jerry Grote walked, Rusty Staub singled and Kranepool hit his homer in the third. Koosman's bid for a shutout was spoiled when Rick Monday homered in the sixth. The Mets' last run counted in the ninth on a single by Cleon Jones and double by Staub.
Reds 3, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Sparked by Cesar Geronimo, who hit a homer, the Reds scored three runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Astros, 3-2. Larry Dierker, pitching for the Astros, had allowed only one hit and held a 1-0 lead before Geronimo's round-tripper tied the score. Joe Morgan then walked, stole second and crossed the plate on a double by Johnny Bench. A single by Tony Perez moved Bench to third and Dan Driessen followed with a single to drive in what proved to be the winning run. Cesar Cedeno homered for the Astros in the ninth inning.
Dodgers 2, Braves 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
In another of their last-ditch victories, the Dodgers scored twice in the ninth inning to defeat the Braves, 2-1, marking the 15th time this season that they had won a game in their last time at bat. The Braves counted their run off Andy Messersmith in the eighth on a single by Craig Robinson, sacrifice by Max Leon and infield hits by Ralph Garr and Darrell Evans. Messersmith was removed for a pinch-hitter and Mike Marshall, who pitched the ninth, was the winner on a Dodgers' rally. Bill Buckner began it with a single and scored the tying run on singles by Jim Wynn and Steve Garvey. After a pass to Willie Crawford loaded the bases, Ron Cey singled to score Wynn with the winning run.
Expos 5, Phillies 0 at Montreal (night game):
Steve Renko turned in the third one-hitter of his career while pitching the Expos to a 5-0 victory over the Phillies. Dave Cash singled in the sixth inning for the only hit off the righthander. The Expos erupted for all their runs in the fifth inning with Bob Bailey hitting a grand slam. Larry Lintz and Willie Davis singled and Ron Fairly walked to load the bases for Bailey's homer off Dick Ruthven. A walk to Barry Foote and singles by Renko and Ron Hunt added another run before the inning was over.
Padres 3, Giants 1 at San Diego (night game):
Taking advantage of an error, the Padres scored three unearned runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Giants, 3-1. Charlie Williams, a last-minute starter for the Giants when Randy Moffitt came down with an appendicitis attack, yielded only one hit until the seventh inning when Willie McCovey led off with a single. The Giants brought in Steve Barber, who yielded a single by Johnny Grubb. Rod Gaspar, running for McCovey, stopped at second. After a sacrifice by Derrel Thomas, Elias Sosa became the Giants' third pitcher of the inning and walked Fred Kendall intentionally to load the bases. Horace Clarke grounded to Tito Fuentes, who threw home, but Dave Rader dropped the ball, allowing Gaspar to score. Lowell Palmer forced Grubb at the plate. Bobby Tolan then singled, driving in Kendall and Rich Morales, who ran for Clarke. Palmer gained his first victory with the Padres since being purchased from Syracuse (International) May 31.
Cardinals 8, Pirates 7 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals put together four straight hits for two runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Pirates, 8-7. Ted Simmons drove in three runs with a homer and double to help the Cards take a 6-3 lead before the Pirates erupted for four runs in the eighth. Richie Zisk batted in two runs with a bases-loaded single, Gene Clines followed with a single to tie the score and Al Oliver doubled for his fourth RBI of the game to send the Pirates ahead, 7-6. In the Cards' half, Ken Reitz singled and counted the tying run on a double by Mike Tyson. Ted Sizemore beat out an infield hit and Lou Brock followed with a single to drive in the winning run.
