Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 5, Rangers 0 at California (night game):
Nolan Ryan yielded a single by Alex Johnson with two out in the first inning as the only hit off his deliveries while pitching the Angels to a 5-0 victory over the Rangers. Coach Whitey Herzog directed the Angels after the club had fired Bobby Winkles as manager earlier in the day. Dick Williams, named to succeed Winkles, was due to take over the reins on July 1. After giving up the hit to Johnson, Ryan did not permit another baserunner until the speedballer issued his only pass of the game to Toby Harrah in the sixth inning.
Twins 6, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Rod Carew hit a triple and two singles in five times at bat, lifting his average to an even .400, in pacing the Twins to a 6-3 victory over the White Sox. Steve Brye walked, Carew tripled and Tony Oliva homered to give the Twins three runs in the first inning. Carew singled and scored in the third before the Twins added their final pair on a single by Danny Thompson, triple by Glenn Borgmann and single by Brye in the sixth. Carlos May hit a two-run homer for the White Sox.
Indians 2, Red Sox 1 at Cleveland (night game):
Jim Perry gained the 200th victory of his major league career when the Indians defeated the Red Sox, 2-1. The Red Sox scored their run in the second inning on singles by Rico Petrocelli, Dwight Evans and Juan Beniquez before the Indians came back with their pair off Roger Moret in the fifth on a walk to Frank Duffy, triple by Buddy Bell and single by Jack Brohamer. Perry was lifted after giving up a one-out single to Dick McAuliffe in the ninth.
Brewers 5, Tigers 1 at Detroit (night game):
Deron Johnson hit his second homer in two games with the Brewers, connecting with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, to beat the Tigers, 5-1. Dave May doubled, Johnny Briggs walked and Darrell Porter beat out an infield tap to set the stage for Johnson's slam off Joe Coleman.
Royals 5, A's 4 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals erupted for five runs in the fourth inning and defeated the Athletics, 5-4, behind the relief pitching of Marty Pattin. Lindy McDaniel, who started for the Royals in a bid to repeat his victory over the A's June 23, was lifted with one out in the third after falling behind, 3-0.
Reds 6, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
A three-run homer by Dave Concepcion in the fourth inning lifted the Reds to a 6-3 victory over the Braves. The Reds scored twice in the first on singles by Cesar Geronimo and Johnny Bench and double by Tony Perez. The Braves struck back with three runs in their half of the first on doubles by Rowland Office and Darrell Evans, single by Mike Lum, pass to Dusty Baker and single by Davey Johnson. However in the fourth, Perez and Dan Driessen walked and, after Merv Rettenmund forced Driessen, Concepcion smashed his homer. Concepcion also scored the Reds' last run, drawing a walk in the sixth and completing his journey on a sacrifice and single by Pete Rose.
Cubs 5, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
The Cubs broke a 1-1 tie with a four-run outburst in the fifth inning and defeated the Expos, 5-4. Vic Harris tripled and scored when Tim Foli threw poorly to the plate on a grounder by Bill Bonham, who reached second on the error. Don Kessinger, Jerry Morales and Billy Williams followed with singles to produce the next two runs before Jose Cardenal doubled to drive in what proved to be the deciding tally. The Expos rallied for two runs in the sixth.
Cardinals 6, Mets 1 at New York (night game):
The Cardinals piled up six runs in the first two innings and Lynn McGlothen took it from there to record his 11th victory of the season, defeating the Mets, 6-1. With the help of an error by Wayne Garrett, the Cards scored two unearned runs in the first before knocking out Ray Sadecki in the second when they added four runs on singles by Mike Tyson and Lou Brock, sacrifice fly by Ted Sizemore and doubles by Reggie Smith, Ted Simmons and Joe Torre. McGlothen was deprived of a shutout when Ron Hodges walked and Cleon Jones tripled in the sixth.
Giants 4, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
The combination of John D'Acquisto's pitching and a three-run homer by Bobby Bonds enabled the Giants to defeat the Padres, 4-2, and snap a six-game losing streak. Bonds' belt off Randy Jones in the second inning followed a double by Dave Rader and pass to D'Acquisto. The Giants' pitcher also scored in the fourth, hitting a double and crossing the plate on a single by Chris Speier. The Padres picked up their pair in the sixth when Bobby Tolan doubled, Enzo Hernandez singled and Johnny Grubb doubled.
