Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 9, Orioles 6 at Baltimore (night game):
The Red Sox worked two double steals, one of them resulting in a theft of home, while scoring four runs in the ninth inning to defeat the Orioles, 9-6. Paul Blair homered in the first for the Orioles and Danny Cater rapped one for the Red Sox in the fifth in a seesaw game that saw the Orioles tie the score at 5-5 in the eighth when Elrod Hendricks hit a pinch-triple and Boog Powell lofted a sacrifice fly. Juan Beniquez and Carl Yastrzemski drew walks for the Red Sox in the ninth and worked a double steal, putting them in position to score on a single by Dwight Evans. Bob Montgomery singled, sending Evans to third. Evans and Montgomery then pulled off the second double steal of the stanza, Evans scoring. Doug Griffin followed with a single to drive in Montgomery.

A's 7, Angels 5 at California (night game):
Pinch-hitter Pat Bourque supplied the decisive single, driving in two runs in the eighth inning, to enable the Athletics to defeat the Angels, 7-5. Before Bourque's clutch hit, Angel Mangual stood out at bat for the A's, knocking in four runs with a double and homer. The Angels held a 3-2 lead until Mangual rapped his round-tripper with two men on base to put the A's ahead in the sixth. Then in the eighth, Joe Rudi beat out a bunt, Gene Tenace walked and, with two out, Bourque batted for Ted Kubiak and singled to drive in Herb Washington, running for Rudi, and Tenace. An Angels' rally in their half fell short with two runs on singles by Dave Chalk and Bob Oliver and double by Bobby Valentine.

White Sox 4, Royals 1 at Chicago (night game):
Dick Allen and Bill Melton hit homers in the White Sox support of Wilbur Wood, who beat the Royals, 4-1, for his 13th victory. Allen, after hitting his homer in the first inning, rapped a single in the fourth, took third on a single by Carlos May and scored when Ken Henderson grounded into a double play. A three-base error by Jim Wohlford and single by May added a run in the sixth before Melton wrapped up the White Sox scoring with his circuit clout in the seventh.

Indians 5, Brewers 3 at Cleveland (night game):
With two out, the Indians erupted for four runs in the second inning and defeated the Brewers, 5-3. After John Ellis led off with a single the next two batters were retired, but Oscar Gamble singled, Dave Duncan walked and one run scored on a wild pitch by Kevin Kobel. Frank Duffy then singled, driving in two runs. Taking second on the throw to the plate, Duffy also scored on a single by Buddy Bell. George Hendrick accounted for the Indians' last tally with a homer in the seventh. Brewers' scoring included a circuit clout by Don Money.

Tigers 4, Yankees 2 at Detroit (night game):
A four-run outburst in the fifth inning was enough to carry the Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Yankees, who went down to their sixth straight defeat. Fernando Gonzalez homered for the Yankees in the second before the Tigers began their attack on Pat Dobson with a single by Bill Freehan in the fifth. Jerry Moses bunted and when Dobson threw late to second, both runners were safe. Mickey Stanley doubled, driving in Freehan and chasing Dobson. Gary Sutherland greeted arrival of Cecil Upshaw with another double, scoring Moses and Stanley. Jim Northrup later accounted for the fourth run with a sacrifice fly on which Sutherland scored.

Twins 5, Rangers 4 at Minnesota (night game):
Eric Soderholm walked in the ninth inning and sped home from first base on a double by pinch-hitter Glenn Borgmann to bring the Twins a 5-4 victory over the Rangers. Mike Hargrove had four hits for the Rangers and drove in two runs. The Rangers took a 4-2 lead with two runs in the sixth. Jeff Burroughs doubled and scored on a single by Hargrove. After Jim Spencer was hit by a pitch, Lenny Randle singled to drive in Hargrove. The Twins picked up a run in their half of the sixth when Rod Carew doubled and Harmon Killebrew singled. Soderholm singled in the seventh, took third on a single by Bobby Darwin and scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Larry Hisle.

Astros 5, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
In addition to pitching a six-hitter, Claude Osteen had a perfect night at bat with a double, two singles and a sacrifice bunt as the Astros defeated the Braves, 5-1. Osteen's double, a walk to Greg Gross and singles by Larry Milbourne, Cesar Cedeno and Bob Watson produced three runs in the fifth inning. Singles by Tommy Helms, Osteen and Gross added a tally in the sixth. The Astros' final run in the seventh was unearned on an error by Ralph Garr. The Braves' lone tally off Osteen also was unearned, resulting from a wild throw by Helms.

Dodgers 3, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Mike Marshall extended his record streak of relief appearances for the Dodgers to 12 games in a row and gained his 10th victory when Willie Crawford singled and Ron Cey tripled in the eighth inning to beat the Reds, 3-2. Marshall stopped the Reds on four hits in the last four frames after taking over for Don Sutton. The Reds scored their two runs in the first on a single by Ken Griffey and homer by Joe Morgan. The Dodgers got one run back when Crawford tripled and Joe Ferguson grounded out in the second, and their tying tally followed in the fifth on a single by Dave Lopes, his theft of second and single by Steve Garvey.

Mets 4, Phillies 2 at New York (night game):
Tom Seaver, who had missed two starts because of a pinched nerve in his left hip, allowed only three hits in 7 1/3 innings before the trouble flared up again, but the Mets' ace was able to receive credit for a 4-2 victory over the Phillies. Seaver gave up an unearned run in the first when Larry Bowa was safe on an error by Wayne Garrett, stole second and scored on a single by Willie Montanez. Dick Ruthven, who started for the Phillies, allowed only three hits in seven innings, but they included a homer by Cleon Jones following a walk to Rusty Staub in the first. The Mets added an unearned run in the third. After Garrett was safe on an error by Dave Cash, Felix Millan singled, Staub walked and Jones batted Garrett home with an infield out. John Milner drove in the Mets' final run with a single in the eighth. Jack Aker, who replaced Seaver, yielded a run in the ninth on singles by Bowa and Del Unser and a pair of infield outs.

Pirates 4, Expos 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Jim Rooker survived a shaky start and was able to pitch the Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the Expos with batting support from Richie Zisk, who rapped three run-scoring singles. Rooker was tagged for two runs on his first five pitches when Ron Hunt singled, Tim Foli doubled and Willie Davis and Bob Bailey singled. Al Oliver, Willie Stargell and Zisk hit singles for a run in the Pirates' half of the first. Rennie Stennett doubled and Rooker singled to tie the score in the second. John Montague, pitching in relief of Mike Torrez, was the Expos' loser on an unearned run in the fifth. Davis dropped a fly by Oliver, allowing the batter to reach second, and Zisk drove him home with a single. A double by Stargell and single by Zisk added the final tally in the seventh.

Padres 5, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Homers by Cito Gaston and Willie McCovey helped the Padres defeat the Giants, 5-1, to pull out of the N.L.'s West Division cellar for the first time since June 24, 1972. The Giants, who suffered their 10th loss in the last 11 games, dropped into the basement. Gaston homered in the first inning and singled ahead of McCovey's circuit clout in the third. Gaston accounted for his second RBI with a run-scoring single in the ninth. The Giants' only run came on a walk to Bobby Bonds, single by Chris Speier and throwing error by Enzo Hernandez in the eighth before Larry Hardy came in to finish the game for Randy Jones.

Cubs 4, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Just when it appeared the Cubs would settle for one run in the first inning, four extra-base blows produced three more tallies and led to a 4-3 victory over the Cardinals. Don Kessinger walked to lead off the inning, took third on a single by Jerry Morales and scored as Billy Williams bounced into a double play. But Rick Monday followed with a homer and Jose Cardenal, Bill Madlock and Vic Harris hit successive doubles to complete the four-run outburst. The Cardinals, who had a homer by Ted Simmons, were unable to catch up against Jim Todd and Oscar Zamora.
