Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 2, Rangers 1 at Boston (night game):
Luis Tiant pitched a four-hitter and Cecil Cooper scored both of the Red Sox runs in a 2-1 victory over the Rangers. A single by Cesar Tovar, safe bunt by Dave Nelson on which Tim Blackwell threw wildly and sacrifice fly by Jeff Burroughs produced an unearned run off Tiant in the first inning. The Red Sox tied the score in their half when Cooper and Carl Yastrzemski walked and Dwight Evans singled. The winning run followed in the third on a double by Cooper and triple by Yastrzemski to beat Jim Bibby, who allowed six hits.

Orioles 3, Angels 1 at California (night game):
The Angels suffered their 10th straight defeat and ninth in a row under Dick Williams as their new manager when they collected only four hits and lost to the Orioles, 3-1. The Angels' run off Mike Cuellar came in the first inning and was unearned to tie the score at 1-1. Dick Lange then dueled with Cuellar until the eighth when the Orioles broke away with singles by Rich Coggins and Tommy Davis and sacrifice fly by Boog Powell. Al Bumbry batted in an insurance run for the Orioles with a triple in the ninth.

Yankees 8, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Graig Nettles hit the first grand-slam homer of his major league career, climaxing a six-run outburst in the first inning, and Dave Pagan gained his first major league victory as the Yankees defeated the Royals, 8-2. Two walks and a single by Roy White loaded the bases, and the Yankees' first two runs scored on a pass to Otto Velez and single by Thurman Munson before Nettles came to the plate and hit his homer off Paul Splittorff. Amos Otis batted in both of the Royals' runs with a pair of doubles.

Brewers 6, White Sox 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
Leading off the ninth inning, George Scott homered for his fourth RBI of the game to bring the Brewers a 6-5 victory over the White Sox. Scott knocked in a run with a single in the first, but the White Sox came back with a four-run outburst in the second on singles by Bill Sharp and Ed Herrmann, safe squeeze bunt by Bucky Dent and homer by Jorge Orta. The Brewers pulled even in the fifth, scoring three times on a single by Robin Yount, double by Johnny Briggs and singles by Scott, Bob Coluccio and Dave May. Yount doubled in the sixth and came around to score on infield outs by Briggs and Scott. The White Sox then tied the score with consecutive singles by Sharp, Herrmann and Tony Muser in the eighth.

Twins 3, Tigers 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Passing Larry Hisle intentionally to get at Harmon Killebrew proved a mistake when the Twins' veteran star singled in the 11th inning and drove in a run to beat the Tigers, 3-2. The Twins opened the scoring with an unearned run off Joe Coleman in the fourth. Ed Brinkman homered for the Tigers in the sixth, but the Twins regained the lead in their half on a pass to Rod Carew with the bases loaded. The Tigers knotted the count in the ninth when Jim Northrup doubled and Bill Freehan singled. In the 11th, Steve Brye singled and moved up on a sacrifice by Carew. Then came the Tigers' decision to pass Hisle in a move that failed when Killebrew rapped his winning single off John Hiller.

A's 7, Indians 0 at Oakland (night game):
Allowing only three hits, Catfish Hunter retired the last 18 batters in order while pitching the Athletics to a 7-0 victory over the Indians. Joe Rudi batted in three of the A's first four runs with a pair of singles. The other tallies followed in the seventh on a homer by Pat Bourque and two-run single by Reggie Jackson. The victory was Hunter's fifth in a row and 12th of the season.

Reds 8, Cubs 5 at Chicago (day game):
The Reds tied an N. L. record when six different players hit homers in an 8-5 victory over the Cubs. Joe Morgan started the slugging in the first inning, Tony Perez and Cesar Geronimo connected for the circuit in the second, Dan Driessen and Johnny Bench rapped round-trippers in the third and George Foster completed the bombardment with a three-run drive in the sixth. There had been eight previous occasions in the N. L. with one club having homers by six different players in a nine-inning game. The major league mark is seven by the Orioles on May 17, 1967. The Cubs had homers by Rick Monday and Jose Cardenal and the two-team total of eight was one short of the major league record.

Astros 5, Cardinals 2 at Houston (night game):
Dave Roberts conquered the Cardinals for the third straight time this year and sixth time in a row over two years and Lee May smashed two homers, driving in three runs, to lead the Astros to a 5-2 victory. The Cards took a 2-0 lead before May hit his first homer in the second inning. The Astros put together four singles for two runs in the fourth and capped their scoring when Bob Watson singled and May hit his second homer in the fifth.

Expos 5, Giants 4 at Montreal (night game):
A homer by Mike Jorgensen in the fifth inning provided the Expos' deciding run in a 5-4 victory over the Giants. The Expos benefited from the wildness of Tom Bradley when they scored their first four runs in the sixth. Dennis Blair led off with a single, Boots Day sacrificed and Larry Lintz walked. After the runners moved up on an infield out by Willie Davis, Ken Singleton drew an intentional pass to load the bases. Bradley then walked Bob Bailey and Jorgensen, forcing in two runs, and Tim Foli followed with a single to drive in another pair. Chris Arnold batted in three of the Giants' runs with a double and single.

Padres 5, Mets 4 at New York (night game):
Fred Kendall drove in three runs with a double and single and Dave Roberts smashed a two-run homer to enable the Padres to snap their six-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over the Mets. The Padres took a 2-1 lead in the second inning when Nate Colbert and Cito Gaston singled and Kendall hit his double. Colbert singled again in the sixth, stole second and scored on Kendall's single before Roberts hit his homer for the deciding blow. The Mets made the game close in the ninth when Cleon Jones singled, John Milner doubled and Ron Hodges rapped a three-run homer.

Dodgers 8, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Steve Garvey and Bill Russell hit homers as the Dodgers scored eight runs in the first five innings to defeat the Phillies, 8-4. Garvey got the Dodgers rolling with his circuit clout in the first inning. The Phillies came back with a run on doubles by Larry Bowa and Mike Schmidt in their half, but the Dodgers went ahead to stay with a tally in the second on a double by Von Joshua and single by Russell. Russell hit his homer with a man on base in the fifth when the Dodgers capped their scoring with three runs. Al Downing, who started for the Dodgers, gave up a homer by Ollie Brown in the seventh before being lifted with two out in favor of Mike Marshall, who made his 18th appearance in the Dodgers' last 22 games. Marshall yielded five hits and two runs in the last 2 1/3 innings.

Pirates 5, Braves 4 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Ken Brett, who set up the deciding run with a single, gained his 11th victory with the help of Dave Giusti when the Pirates defeated the Braves, 5-4. The Braves took a 2-0 lead before the Pirates erupted for four runs in the fourth inning. Richie Hebner and Richie Zisk singled and both crossed the plate on a double by Manny Sanguillen. After a single by Rennie Stennett, Sanguillen scored on a passed ball. Stennett took second and came home when Mario Mendoza singled. Mendoza singled again in the seventh, raced to third on Brett's single and scored when Marty Perez muffed Ralph Garr's throw from the outfield. The run became earned when Lew Krausse, who was on the mound in relief of Phil Niekro, walked two batters before the inning ended. The Braves rapped Brett for two runs in the eighth on three singles and an infield out before Giusti took over and saved the game.
