Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 3, Rangers 1 at Boston (night game):
Reggie Cleveland, who had given up 125 hits in 108 innings previously this season, turned in a six-hit performance and pitched the Red Sox to a 3-1 win over Texas. The Red Sox worked a double steal to score the first of two runs in the fourth inning. Dwight Evans singled and stopped at second on a single by Carl Yastrzemski. After Bob Montgomery forced Yaz, Evans and Montgomery worked a double steal with Evans scoring. Rick Burleson followed with a double to drive in Montgomery. The Rangers broke Cleveland's shutout bid with a run in the eighth on a double by Lenny Randle and single by Cesar Tovar, but Montgomery clinched the victory with a homer in the Red Sox half of the eighth.

Orioles 9, Angels 1 at California (day game):
Dick Williams was banished in an argument with the umpires in the third inning and, as a result, was not around to watch the Angels finish losing to the Orioles, 9-1, for their 11th straight defeat and 10th in a row under their new manager's guidance. Boog Powell batted in four runs for the Orioles with a homer and single. Rich Coggins also hit a homer and single to account for two RBIs. The Angels, who were held to six hits by Ross Grimsley, counted their lone run in the ninth on singles by Mickey Rivers and Dave Chalk and an error by Bobby Grich.

Yankees 9, Royals 4 at Kansas City (night game):
After Marty Pattin retired 15 batters in order, the Yankees exploded with a homer attack to defeat the Royals, 9-4. The Royals grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run triple by Hal McRae and single by Jim Wohlford. John Mayberry added a homer in the third before the Yankees swung into action. In the sixth, Chris Chambliss singled and on Pattin's next pitch Thurman Munson homered. Munson batted in another run with a single in the seventh. Bobby Murcer then took over the slugging role, hitting homers in the eighth and ninth, each with a man on base.

Brewers 6, White Sox 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Bill Champion pitched a four-hitter and Mike Hegan and George Scott smashed homers as the Brewers defeated the White Sox, 6-1. The Brewers rapped Wilbur Wood for two runs in the second inning before Scott hit for the circuit in the third. Bill Melton homered for the White Sox in the seventh, but the Brewers came back with three runs in their half when Don Money doubled, Johnny Briggs walked and Hegan clinched the victory with his round-tripper.

Twins 11, Tigers 6 at Minnesota (night game):
The Twins, who were their own worst enemies, committing four errors that led to six unearned runs, finally overcame their fielding deficiencies with five runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Tigers, 11-6. Larry Hisle drove in the Twins' first four runs with a homer and single. Two tallies that tied the score at 6-6 followed in the sixth on singles by Eric Soderholm and Craig Kusick, sacrifice bunt by Danny Thompson, sacrifice fly by Glenn Borgmann and double by Rod Carew. In the eighth, Carew hit his second double of the game to drive in Kusick with the tie-breaking run. The Twins then loaded the bases and the other markers scored on a walk to Harmon Killebrew and singles by Bobby Darwin and Soderholm.

Cubs 11, Reds 3 at Chicago (day game):
Erupting for six runs in the eighth inning, the Cubs clinched an 11-3 victory over the Reds. Steve Swisher walked with the bases loaded and hit a homer, and Jerry Morales drove in two runs with a grounder and double as the Cubs built up a 5-0 lead before the Reds got on the board when Johnny Bench doubled with the sacks filled in the seventh. Billy Grabarkewitz and Swisher started the Cubs' outburst in the eighth with singles and, after a sacrifice, both runners scored on a double by Don Kessinger. Rick Monday followed with a triple, Jose Cardenal walked and Andre Thornton then capped the Cubs' scoring with a three-run homer.

Astros 3, Cardinals 2 at Houston (night game):
Greg Gross, who is one of the leading candidates for Rookie of the Year honors, singled in the seventh inning, stole second and scored on a single by Roger Metzger to bring the Astros a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals. The Redbirds used a single by Lou Brock, his theft of second and a single by Bake McBride for a run in the first and added their other tally when Jim Dwyer homered in the second. The Astros came back with the tying pair in their half of the second on singles by Lee May, Milt May, Doug Rader and Larry Dierker. Mike Cosgrove, in relief of Dierker, gained his fifth straight victory without a defeat, while Orlando Pena, in relief of Alan Foster for the Cardinals, was handed his first loss after winning five games in a row.

Giants 4, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
Although held to six hits, the Giants were able to beat the Expos, 4-2, with the aid of two unearned runs. Three of the Giants' runs scored in the third inning. Jim Barr, who allowed 10 hits in pitching the route for the Giants, drew a leadoff walk and stopped at second on a single by Mike Phillips. Chris Speier bounced to Steve Renko and when the Expos' pitcher threw wildly in attempting a forceout at third, Barr scored. Phillips crossed the plate on an infield out by Gary Thomasson and Speier came home with the third run when Dave Kingman singled. The Giants' other tally counted in the sixth when Barry Foote dropped a throw to the plate, allowing Gary Matthews to score.

Padres 8, Mets 1 at New York (day game):
A winner of only three games previously this season while losing 11, Bill Greif pitched the Padres to an 8-1 victory over the Mets. Dave Winfield whacked two homers for the Padres and Dave Roberts hit one. The Mets' lone run counted on a triple by Wayne Garrett and single by Felix Millan.

Phillies 5, Dodgers 4 at Philadelphia (night game):
Mike Marshall's string of nine straight victories in relief came to an end when the Phillies scored in the ninth inning to beat the Dodgers' iron man, 5-4. Marshall, taking over as the Dodgers' third pitcher of the game, gave up a single by Tommy Hutton, sent the runner to second with a wild pitch and then was beaten when Dave Cash singled. Davey Lopes had four hits, including a homer, and drove in two of the Dodgers' runs. Joe Ferguson accounted for the other pair with a round-tripper. The Phillies, who had a two-run homer by Del Unser, tied the score at 4-4 in the seventh when Dave Cash singled with the bases loaded.

Braves 10, Pirates 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Braves unleashed a 15-hit attack, including two-run homers by Dusty Baker and Davey Johnson, to defeat the Pirates, 10-5. The Braves knocked out Dock Ellis in the first inning, scoring three runs on a single by Ralph Garr, triple by Craig Robinson and Baker's homer. Garr tripled in the second and singled in the third to help the Braves count twice in each stanza. Johnson hit his homer in the fourth.
