Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 12, Rangers 3 at Boston (day game):
Tommy Harper collected four of the Red Sox' 15 hits and Carl Yastrzemski, Rico Petrocelli and Rick Miller drove in three runs apiece in a 12-3 trouncing of the Rangers. Miller homered with a man on base in the first inning and added an RBI with a single in the eighth. Yastrzemski singled a run across in the third and accounted for two others with a double in the seventh. Petrocelli doubled for an RBI in the first and homered with a man on base in the seventh. Bill Lee, pitching the fifth straight complete game to the credit of the Red Sox Staff, doled out four hits, including a homer by Toby Harrah.

White Sox 4, Orioles 3 at Chicago (night game):
A wild pitch by Grant Jackson with two out in the ninth inning enabled Brian Downing to score and brought the White Sox a 4-3 victory over the Orioles. Earlier in the game, Downing homered in the fifth inning for the first White Sox hit. Tommy Davis drove in two of the Orioles' three runs. The White Sox tied the score in the eighth. After Bucky Dent singled and was forced by Lee Richard, Carlos May fouled out, but singles by Dick Allen and Bill Melton scored Richard and when Paul Blair threw wildly from center field, Allen also crossed the plate. Downing walked in the ninth before Jackson took over as the Orioles' fifth pitcher of the game. Downing took second on a sacrifice, moved to third on an infield out and then scored on Jackson's wild pitch.

Yankees 2, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
With a double by Bobby Murcer as the key hit, the Yankees scored twice in the first inning and rode behind the pitching of Doc Medich to a 2-1 victory over the Royals. With one out in the first, Elliott Maddox doubled off Nelson Briles and crossed the plate on Murcer's two-bagger. Murcer took an extra base when Hal McRae fumbled the ball in right field and scored on a groundout by Ron Blomberg. That unearned run proved decisive when the Royals were able to score only once off Medich on singles by Tony Solaita, Jim Wohlford and Fran Healy in the second inning.

Twins 5, Indians 2 at Minnesota (night game):
With two out and one man on base, the Twins came to life and scored four runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Indians, 5-2. With the Indians in the lead, 2-1, Eric Soderholm walked in the seventh and was forced by Jim Holt. Glenn Borgmann flied out, but Tony Oliva walked and Rod Carew singled, driving in Holt to tie the score. Steve Braun singled and Jerry Terrell, running for Oliva, crossed the plate to put the Twins ahead. Larry Hisle then applied the finishing touch with a double that produced a pair of clinching tallies.

Reds 4, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
Dave Concepcion scored from third base on a grounder by Johnny Bench in the 10th inning to give the Reds a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. Each club scored twice in the first inning before the Reds went ahead with a double by Merv Rettenmund and single by Clay Kirby in the fourth. Rick Monday knotted the count with a homer in the eighth. Concepcion singled to start the tenth and stopped at second on a single by Joe Morgan. Burt Hooton, pitching in relief for the Cubs, uncorked a wild pitch, allowing the runners to advance. Bench then hit a grounder on which Billy Grabarkewitz made a diving stop, but the second baseman was in no position to throw home and had to settle for retiring Bench at first as Concepcion scored.
