Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 12, Red Sox 1 at Boston (day game):
Having ended their 11-game losing streak in the preceding night's contest, the Angels made it two victories in succession by routing the Red Sox, 12-1. Andy Hassler pitched the distance for the Angels and doled out eight hits. The Angels raked five Red Sox pitchers for 16 hits, 11 of them for extra bases. They included a homer and triple by Frank Robinson, a triple and two doubles by Joe Lahoud and two doubles by Mickey Rivers.
Orioles 2, White Sox 1 at Chicago (night game):
Mike Cuellar pitched no-hit ball for 6 1/3 innings before wilting in the 95-degree heat, but the Orioles' veteran lefthander gained a 2-1 victory over the White Sox. Wilbur Wood, who started for the White Sox, did not allow a hit for the first five frames before the Orioles scored in the sixth on a single by Bobby Grich, a passed ball and single by Don Baylor. An infield single by Boog Powell, error by Dick Allen and sacrifice fly by Mark Belanger added what proved to be the deciding run in the seventh. The White Sox picked up their tally in the home half of the seventh and could have tied the score except for a base-running blunder by Ken Henderson. Bill Melton reached second base when Baylor dropped his fly ball in left field. Henderson singled, moving Melton to third, but Henderson was caught in a rundown between first and second and was tagged out. As a result, the White Sox scored only one run when Brian Downing doubled.
Tigers 8, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Although tagged for 11 hits, Woodie Fryman turned in his first route-going performance of the season and pitched the Tigers to an 8-2 victory over the Royals. The Tigers grabbed the lead in the first inning when Mickey Stanley doubled and Bill Freehan homered. The Royals notched their pair in the third on a single by Kurt Bevacqua and inside-the-park homer by Cookie Rojas on a drive that eluded Marvin Lane in left field. However, the Tigers' rookie outfielder more than made up for it, collecting four hits and driving in two runs. The Tigers broke the tie with two runs in the fourth with singles by Lane, Aurelio Rodriguez and Ed Brinkman and sacrifice fly by Stanley. Lane accounted for his two RBIs with a triple in the fifth and then scored for the second time in the game on a sacrifice fly by Rodriguez.
Brewers 5, Rangers 2 at Milwaukee (day game):
Tom Murphy, relieving Jim Colborn with two men on base and two out in the ninth inning, struck out Lenny Randle to save the Brewers' 5-2 victory over the Rangers. The save was Murphy's ninth. Two walks issued by Jim Bibby led to the Brewers' initial tallies in the second inning. The Brewers added a third run in the fourth on a single by Darrell Porter, a sacrifice and single by Pedro Garcia. Don Money singled, Robin Yount tripled and Johnny Briggs hit a sacrifice fly for the clinching pair in the seventh.
Twins 2, Indians 1 at Minnesota (day game):
Rod Carew, who bunted safely in the 10th inning when the Twins loaded the bases and failed to score, laid down another safe bunt in the 11th to plate Craig Kusick and beat the Indians, 2-1. The Indians counted their run in the second on singles by Oscar Gamble and George Hendrick and infield out by Dave Duncan. The Twins picked up the tying tally in the eighth on a double by Steve Brye and two errors by Frank Duffy. In the 11th, Eric Soderholm singled and was forced by Kusick. Glenn Borgmann singled with two out, sending Kusick to third. Carew then surprised with his bunt to the left of the mound past Tom Hilgendorf.
Yankees 12, A's 6 at New York (day game):
The streaking Yankees piled up 17 hits and enjoyed two big innings while defeating the Athletics. 12-6, for their sixth straight victory. The Yankees sent 10 men to bat in the fifth and scored five runs. Two walks and a single by Roy White loaded the bases for Bobby Murcer, who drove in two runs with a double. A sacrifice fly by Lou Piniella and singles by Graig Nettles and Bill Sudakis added three tallies before the inning ended. Coming back in the seventh, 12 Yankees went to the plate during a six-run outburst that included a double by Thurman Munson and six singles. Reggie Jackson and Gene Tenace each homered with a man on base for the Athletics.
Astros 4, Cubs 0 at Houston (night game):
Backed by three double plays, Claude Osteen escaped trouble while pitching the Astros to a 4-0 victory over the Cubs. Osteen gave up eight hits. The Astros also had only eight hits, but they included a double by Milt May and homer by Doug Rader in the second inning. The other two runs scored in the third on a pass to Greg Gross and singles by Roger Metzger, Cesar Cedeno and Bob Watson.
Dodgers 2, Mets 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Jim Wynn homered after a single by Bill Buckner in the first inning and that was enough to enable Andy Messersmith to pitch the Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Mets. Wynn's wallop was his first since hitting two homers on June 22 and condemned Harry Parker to defeat. The Mets scored their run in the eighth on singles by Ted Martinez, Ed Kranepool and Wayne Garrett and infield out by Ken Boswell.
Reds 9, Pirates 4 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Making his first start of the season, Tom Hall gained his first victory when the Reds defeated the Pirates, 9-4, behind the batting of Johnny Bench and Tony Perez, who drove in seven runs between them. Hall pitched 5 1/3 innings before giving way to Pedro Borbon. Bench socked a three-run homer off Jerry Reuss in the first, and the Reds added a run on a single by Perez in the third. The Pirates, after coming back with two in their half of the third on a double by Richie Hebner and three singles, tied the score in the fourth with two walks and a triple by Mario Mendoza. The Reds broke the tie and went ahead to stay with two runs in the fifth on a single by Pete Rose, pass to Joe Morgan, single by Bench and sacrifice fly by Perez. Bench doubled for his third hit of the game in the seventh and scored on a single by Perez, who also wound up with three hits.
Padres 5, Expos 1 at San Diego (night game):
Bobby Tolan rapped two successive homers to lead the Padres' support of Dave Friesleben, who pitched a five-hitter and beat the Expos, 5-1. Tolan led off the game with a round-tripper and another run followed when Nate Colbert walked, stole second and Willie McCovey singled. With two out in the second, Tolan homered again and the Padres proceeded to add three more runs on a walk to Derrel Thomas and singles by Colbert, McCovey and Dave Winfield. A pass to Ken Singleton, wild pitch and single by Ron Fairly produced the Expos' counter in the fourth.
Giants 13, Phillies 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Steve Ontiveros and Dave Kingman batted in six runs between them as the Giants' first basemen in a 13-3 victory over the Phillies. Ontiveros drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double in the third and singled for another RBI in the fifth before leaving the game with a pulled leg muscle. Kingman, taking over at first base, hit a two-run homer in the eighth. Mike Caldwell, who had been plagued by tendinitis, made his first start since June 6 and gained his first victory since May 19 with the help of Randy Moffitt, who relieved in the seventh inning.
Braves 8, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Although Ron Reed had defeated the Cardinals only three times previously while losing 10 times, the Braves' righthander ignored his past performances and breezed to an 8-1 victory on a dole of seven singles. The Cardinals escaped a shutout with a run in the ninth on hits by Reggie Smith, Joe Torre and Ken Reitz. Ralph Garr and Marty Perez led the Braves at bat. Garr had two singles, drove in two runs and scored one. Perez rapped a triple and single, good for three RBIs, and scored once.
