Today's scores and summaries:
A's 6, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (night game):
Held hitless for eight innings by rookie Wayne Garland, the A's rallied with five runs on only four safeties in the ninth to turn back the Orioles, 6-4. Dick Green broke Garland's spell with a leadoff single and Oakland loaded the bases on an error by Enos Cabell and single by Bert Campaneris. Sal Bando singled past third for two runs. Reliever Grant Jackson then gave up a run-scoring double to Reggie Jackson which also sent pinch-runner Herb Washington to third. An intentional walk to Joe Rudi loaded the bases. Pinch-hitter Tim Hosley followed with a sacrifice fly which broke the 4-4 tie, and Jackson scored the fifth run of the frame on Bob Reynolds' wild pitch. The A's had scored one run in the second without benefit of a hit, and the Orioles took the lead with two in the bottom of that inning then padded it to 4-1 with two more in the fourth.
White Sox 3, Tigers 2 at Chicago (night game):
Ken Henderson's homer with one out in the ninth snapped a tie and gave the White Sox a 3-2 nod over the Tigers, who lost for the seventh time in eight games. The Sox took a 2-0 lead against loser Lerrin LaGrow, who went the distance, in the third on a walk to Bucky Dent and singles by Bill Sharp, Jorge Orta and Carlos May. The Tigers kayoed Bart Johnson and tied the score in the eighth on singles by pinch-hitter Gates Brown and Ed Brinkman, an infield out and the third hit of the game by Gary Sutherland, a two-run single. Rich Gossage, the third Chicago hurler, picked up the victory.
Angels 4, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
The Angels beat the Indians for the first time in 10 meetings this season as Nolan Ryan, with ninth-inning help, hurled California to a 4-2 triumph, ending his personal three-game losing streak. Ryan had a three-hit shutout through eight innings before a double by George Hendrick and single by Buddy Bell produced the first Indian run. Relievers Luis Quintana and Dave Sells preserved Ryan's 11th victory, although Cleveland tallied once more on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly by Luis Alvarado. California took a 2-0 lead in the second on singles by Ellie Rodriguez, Denny Doyle and Orlando Ramirez and groundout by Mickey Rivers. Loser Steve Arlin walked Leroy Stanton and Frank Robinson in the third, and reliever Tom Hilgendorf surrendered a single to Bobby Valentine which loaded the bases. Bob Oliver's sacrifice fly then produced the third Angel run, and the winners added an insurance tally in the top of the ninth.
Royals 3, Red Sox 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Scoring all of their runs with two out in second, the Royals and Nelson Briles edged the Red Sox, 3-2. A walk to Tony Solaita, double by Fran Healy, two-run two-bagger by George Brett and run-scoring single by Frank White pinned the defeat on Reggie Cleveland. Carl Yastrzemski whacked a solo homer for the Red Sox in the fourth, and Boston made it a one-run game in the eighth on Tommy Harper's two-out single and stolen base, and a single by Rick Miller. Steve Mingori and Doug Bird worked in relief of Briles in the ninth.
Twins 4, Brewers 3 at Minnesota (night game):
A ninth-inning single by Steve Brye drove in Luis Gomez with the winning run as the Twins edged the Brewers in come-from-behind fashion, 4-3. Bob Coluccio's single and stolen base, a groundout and single by Darrell Porter gave Milwaukee a 1-0 lead in the first. The Brewers made it 2-0 in the seventh when Dave May reached first on an error, moved to second on Pedro Garcia's sacrifice and came home on John Vukovich's single. But the Twins knocked out starter Bill Champion during a three-run home half of the same inning. Jim Holt's RBI single came on the heels of two walks and, after pinch-hitter Tony Oliva was walked intentionally to fill the bases, Glenn Borgmann singled home two runs. Porter's single, a throwing error, base hit by Mike Hegan and run-scoring single by pinch-batter Charlie Moore pulled the Brewers into a 3-3 tie in the eighth. Brye's game-deciding hit in the ninth came after Gomez had singled with one out and moved to third on Borgmann's double.
Cubs 7, Braves 3 at Atlanta (night game):
The Cubs managed four runs in the ninth on only one hit, Andre Thornton's two-run single, in a come-from-behind 7-3 triumph over the Braves. Knuckleballer Joe Niekro struck out Chicago leadoff batter Carmen Fanzone to open the ninth, but Fanzone reached first when the ball eluded catcher Johnny Oates. Don Kessinger popped out, but three straight walks, the final one by reliever Danny Frisella, forced home the tie-breaking run. Thornton followed with his two-run single, a walk loaded the bases again and the final run crossed the plate when Frisella fielded winner Oscar Zamora's sacrifice bunt, but threw to third too late for a forceout. The Braves' Ralph Garr had tied the score in the seventh with a solo homer. The Cubs pecked out single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth frames for a 3-0 lead. Atlanta cut it to 3-2 in the sixth on Dusty Baker's two-run homer.
Pirates 3, Astros 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Winless since June 14, the Pirates' Dock Ellis threw a steady eight-hitter at the Astros and ended Houston's six-game winning streak, 3-1. Ellis hurled scoreless ball after the first, when the Astros counted their only run on Greg Gross' single, a groundout and double by Bob Watson. Pittsburgh went ahead, 2-1, in the fourth on singles by Al Oliver, Richie Zisk, Manny Sanguillen, Richie Hebner and Frank Taveras. Taveras bunted safely in the seventh, was sacrificed to second, advanced to third on a groundout and scored the final run when second baseman Tommy Helms booted a grounder by Gene Clines.
Reds 3, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Losers in nine of their last 10 games, the Cardinals were shut out by Clay Kirby, 3-0, as the Reds' righthander scattered nine hits and got home run help from Joe Morgan. Cincinnati got the only run necessary off loser Alan Foster in the second when Dave Concepcion drew a two-out walk and rode home on Ken Griffey's double. Morgan led off the eighth with his 12th homer and the Reds tacked on their final run in the ninth against reliever Mike Garman, Cesar Geronimo getting the RBI with a two-out single. The defeat dropped St. Louis, which has been able to score only two runs in the last 35 innings, below .500 for the first time this season.
