Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Angels 4 at Baltimore (night game):
Don Hood pitched four innings of no-hit relief for the Orioles and was rewarded with a victory when Don Baylor homered in the 10th to beat the Angels, 5-4. The Orioles were ahead, 4-1, after three innings, the Angels' run coming on a homer by Denny Doyle, but Ross Grimsley failed to hold the lead. The Angels picked up two runs in the sixth on a single by Orlando Ramirez and doubles by Leroy Stanton and Frank Robinson. Grimsley was kayoed in the seventh when Bob Oliver singled and Rodriguez walked. After Hood relieved, the Angels' tying run scored on two successive forceouts at second base.

White Sox 7, Brewers 3 at Chicago (night game):
Led by Ken Henderson, who hit a homer, double and single, driving in three runs, the White Sox defeated the Brewers, 7-3. The White Sox began the scoring with a run in the second on a double by Bill Melton and single by Ed Herrmann. In the third, a pass to Pat Kelly, safe bunt by Jorge Orta, single by Carlos May and double by Henderson added two tallies. After George Scott homered for the Brewers in the fifth, the White Sox put the game away with three runs in the fifth on a pass to Kelly, single by Orta, sacrifice fly by Dick Allen and homer by Henderson. Bart Johnson, who gained his third straight victory since being recalled from the minors, was lifted in the seventh after Darrell Porter homered for only the third hit off his deliveries. Terry Forster gave up another run before the inning ended, but then blanked the Brewers the rest of the way and was credited with his 14th save.

Indians 4, A's 0 at Cleveland (night game):
Dick Bosman pitched a no-hitter for the Indians in a 4-0 victory over the Athletics, but the righthander deprived himself of a perfect game with a throwing error that allowed Sal Bando to reach base in the fourth inning. The Indians scored two runs in the third on a single by Tommy McCraw and homer by Joe Lis. Their two other runs registered in the fourth. John Ellis singled and scored on a double by Buddy Bell, who took third on the throw to the plate and counted on an infield out by McCraw.

Twins 7, Tigers 5 at Detroit (night game):
After a first inning that saw scoring on wildness vs. power, the Twins pulled away to defeat the Tigers, 7-5. In the first, the Twins scored three runs with the aid of three wild pitches by Lerrin LaGrow, but in the Tigers' half Vic Albury faced only three batters and was kayoed when Mickey Stanley homered, Gary Sutherland walked and Al Kaline singled. Dave Goltz relieved and on his first pitch Bill Freehan homered to put the Tigers ahead, 4-3. The Twins came back to take the lead with two runs in the fifth on a pass to Glenn Borgmann, single by Rod Carew and double by Larry Hisle. Craig Kusick doubled in the seventh, moved up on a sacrifice and scored what proved to be the deciding run on a single by Borgmann. Carew plated an insurance marker with a single in the eighth before the Tigers counted once in their half on doubles by Freehan and Jim Northrup.

Royals 5, Yankees 4 at New York (night game):
The Royals, after scoring four runs on successive homers by Amos Otis and John Mayberry in the fifth inning, picked up another tally in the ninth and defeated the Yankees, 5-4. In the fifth Fred Patek walked, Jim Wohlford singled and Otis homered for the Royals' first three runs before Mayberry followed with a solo swat. Fran Healy singled in ninth. Al Cowens was retired and George Brett forced Healy, but Patek doubled and Wohlford singled to score Brett. That run, which put the Royals ahead, 5-2, became all-important when the Yankees rallied for two runs in their half of the ninth on a single by Sandy Alomar with the bases loaded.

Red Sox 3, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
Striking out Toby Harrah and Duke Sims with the bases loaded and one away in the ninth inning, Luis Tiant preserved his 14th victory as the Red Sox defeated the Rangers, 3-1. The Red Sox scored their initial run in the fifth on singles by Rick Burleson and Tim Blackwell around a stolen base. Tiant retired the first 12 batters before giving up the Rangers' run in their half of the fifth on a double by Mike Hargrove and single by Jim Spencer. The Rangers committed three errors in the sixth when the Red Sox broke away. Dwight Evans beat out an infield hit to Lenny Randle and advanced to second on the third baseman's wild throw. Carl Yastrzemski singled, scoring Evans, and took second when center fielder Joe Lovitto overran the ball. Yastrzemski then moved to third on a wild pickoff throw by catcher Sims and scored on a single by Rico Petrocelli.

Pirates 2, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Dave Giusti provided a helping hand for Ken Brett by retiring the last two batters to save the Pirates' 2-0 victory over the Braves. Brett batted in the Pirates' first run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning, scoring Frank Taveras, who had tripled. The other run came with two out in the ninth on a pass to Ed Kirkpatrick and double by Bob Robertson.

Reds 4, Cubs 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Jack Billingham was able to beat the Cubs for the fourth straight time this season, although knocked out in the sixth inning of the Reds' 4-1 victory. The Cubs' run scored in the fourth on a walk to Bill Madlock and singles by Billy Grabarkewitz and Steve Swisher. The Reds came back with three in their half after loading the bases on walks to Joe Morgan and Dave Concepcion around a single by Johnny Bench. George Foster singled, driving in two runs, and Bill Plummer added a tally with a sacrifice fly. Billingham was lifted after putting two men on base with none out in the sixth. Pedro Borbon cooled the Cubs on two hits the rest of the way. The Reds added an insurance run in the seventh on a walk to Foster, a wild pitch and double by Plummer.

Dodgers 4, Phillies 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers entertained a Helmet Night crowd of 53,106 by defeating the Phillies, 4-0, behind the combined pitching of Doug Rau and Mike Marshall. Rau allowed two singles in the first seven innings before going out for a pinch-hitter. Marshall yielded one single in the last two frames. The Dodgers scored a run in the first on a safe bunt by Davey Lopes, wild pitch by Wayne Twitchell and single by Bill Buckner. Jim Wynn batted in a run with a single in the sixth and accounted for another RBI with a single in the seventh when the Dodgers added their last two tallies.

Mets 4, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Taking advantage of a two-out error by Horace Clarke, the Mets scored four unearned runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Padres, 4-2. Jon Matlack helped himself with a single to lead off the stanza and Bud Harrelson walked. After Wayne Garrett struck out and Cleon Jones flied out, Clarke booted a grounder by Rusty Staub, allowing Matlack to score. Ed Kranepool followed with a single, driving in Harrelson. After an intentional pass to John Milner, Jerry Grote singled two runs across the plate to provide what proved to be the Mets' winning margin. Cito Gaston homered for one of the Padres' five hits off Matlack.

Giants 6, Expos 2 at San Francisco (night game):
Continuing his hot hitting, Gary Matthews rapped three singles and drove in four runs to pace the Giants to a 6-2 victory over the Expos. Matthews, who had a total of 25 hits in his last 59 times at bat, plated two runs with a single in third, added two more with a single in the fifth and scored after hitting his third single of the game in the eighth. Mike Caldwell held the Expos to two hits until a single by Barry Foote, double by Jose Morales, error by Gary Thomasson and single by Willie Davis produced two runs in the eighth and brought Randy Moffitt to the mound in relief.

Astros 5, Cardinals 1 at St. Louis (night game):
With a crowd of 19,230 on hand, the Cardinals went over the million mark in home attendance for the 12th straight season while losing to the Astros, 5-1.
