Angels 6, Orioles 4 at Baltimore (day game):
Collecting his fourth hit of the game, Mickey Rivers doubled in the ninth inning to spark the Angels to a 6-4 victory over the Orioles. After Rivers' double, Dave Chalk bunted safely and Frank Robinson hit a sacrifice fly to break a 4-4 tie. Winston Llenas followed with a single, driving in Chalk with an insurance run. Bob Oliver drove in two earlier runs for the Angels with a pair of singles. The Orioles had homers by Bobby Grich, Brooks Robinson and Tommy Davis before tying the score at 4-4 in the eighth on a double by Davis and single by Don Baylor.

[DH] White Sox 6, Brewers 2 (day game) / Brewers 5, White Sox 3 at Chicago (day game):
A grand slam by Deron Johnson climaxed a five-run rally in the ninth inning and brought the Brewers a 5-3 victory in the second game of a doubleheader after the White Sox won the first game, 6-2. In the opener, Jim Kaat gained his seventh straight victory and the White Sox extended their winning streak to seven games. Dick Allen hit a homer and two doubles in support of Kaat. Bill Melton also homered in the White Sox attack. In the nightcap, Stan Bahnsen, who started for the White Sox, held the Brewers hitless until Johnny Briggs singled with one out in the seventh inning. However, after Bob Hansen and Mike Hegan rapped singles in the ninth, Bahnsen was removed in favor of Terry Forster. Briggs struck out, but George Scott singled to drive in Hansen. Darrell Porter then walked to load the bases. setting the stage for Johnson's grand slam.

A's 6, Indians 3 at Cleveland (day game):
Ted Kubiak, subbing for Sal Bando, who was sidelined with an injured ankle, delivered the go-ahead single in the seventh inning when the Athletics scored four runs to defeat the Indians. 6-3. The A's, who had a homer by Joe Rudi in the fifth, were trailing, 2-1, when they loaded the bases in the seventh on a walk to Reggie Jackson and singles by Rudi and Gene Tenace. Jackson scored the tying run on an infield out by Pat Bourque. Kubiak then delivered his single, driving in Rudi and Tenace. Bill North followed with a triple to score Kubiak.

Twins 10, Tigers 7 at Detroit (day game):
Sending 12 men to bat, the Twins scored seven runs in the fourth inning to clinch a 10-7 victory over the Tigers. The Twins, who were leading, 2-1, opened their outburst with a run on a single by Jerry Terrell and double by Craig Kusick. Phil Roof singled Kusick home. Rod Carew doubled and Larry Hisle drew an intentional pass to load the bases. Bobby Darwin singled, driving in two runs, and Eric Soderholm followed with a homer for three more. Bert Blyleven was the winner, but lasted only five innings before giving way to Tom Burgmeier. Bill Freehan homered for the Tigers and Aurelio Rodriguez tripled with the bases loaded.

Yankees 5, Royals 4 at New York (day game):
A double by Bobby Murcer with the bases loaded, following an intentional pass to Elliott Maddox, capped a three-run rally in the seventh inning and brought the Yankees a 5-4 victory over the Royals. The K. C. crew took a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a single by Vada Pinson, double by Cookie Rojas and homer by Amos Otis. Jim Mason singled with the sacks filled to produce two runs for the Yankees in the second. The Royals made it 4-2 with a run in the seventh on singles by Fran Healy and Rojas around a sacrifice. In the Yankees' half, Lou Piniella singled, Chris Chambliss was safe on an error by Rojas and Thurman Munson walked. Mason grounded out, scoring Piniella. After Sandy Alomar lined out, the Royals issued a pass to Maddox in a move that backfired when Murcer hit his double to drive in the tying and winning runs.

Rangers 2, Red Sox 1 at Texas (night game):
Jeff Burroughs, who leads the A. L. in RBIs, batted in his 73rd run of the season with a single in the seventh inning to give the Rangers a 2-1 victory over the Red Sox. Three Ranger errors resulted in a Red Sox run in the first. The Rangers tied the score in the fifth on a walk to Jim Fregosi, forceout by Jim Sundberg and singles by Cesar Tovar and Alex Johnson. Then in the seventh, Sundberg singled, stopped at second on a single by Johnson and scored the winning run on Burroughs' hit.

Pirates 6, Braves 2 at Atlanta (day game):
Richie Hebner hit two homers and two doubles and scored four of the Pirates' runs in a 6-2 victory over the Braves. Hebner doubled and crossed the plate on a single by Willie Stargell in the first inning. homered in the third, doubled and scored on a single by Al Oliver in the fifth and homered again in the seventh. Manny Sanguillen also had a round-tripper for the Pirates. The Braves' five hits off Dock Ellis included a homer by Darrell Evans.

Reds 8, Cubs 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Ken Griffey and Joe Morgan hit homers in the Reds' support of Don Gullett, who beat the Cubs, 8-2, for his fifth straight victory. In the fifth inning, after Dave Concepcion doubled, Griffey rapped a line drive and raced around the bases with an inside-the-park homer when the ball bounced over the head of Jose Cardenal in right field and rolled to the fence. Morgan's homer accounted for the first of the Reds' two runs in the sixth and they added three more in the eighth, two scoring on a double by Johnny Bench.

Phillies 2, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
Jim Lonborg yielded only five hits and pitched the Phillies to a 2-1 victory over the Dodgers with the aid of a homer by Mike Anderson and tie-breaking single by Willie Montanez. The Dodgers' run in the second inning was unearned on an error by Dave Cash. Anderson's homer tied the score in the third. Cash, making amends for his error, drew a walk in the eighth and Larry Bowa sacrificed. Cash stopped at third on a single by Mike Schmidt and then scored the winning run on Montanez' hit.

Padres 7, Mets 3 at San Diego (day game):
Willie McCovey hit two homers, each with a man on base, and Dave Winfield joined in the attack with three RBIs as the Padres defeated the Mets, 7-3. Doubles by Enzo Hernandez and Winfield accounted for the Padres' initial run in the first inning and they took a 3-1 lead in the third when Hernandez singled and McCovey homered. Bill Greif, who was the winner with the help of Randy Jones, singled in the fifth and Hernandez walked. After an infield out, both scored on a single by Winfield. McCovey followed with his second homer of the game and 425th of his career.

[DH] Giants 4, Expos 0 (day game) / Giants 2, Expos 0 at San Francisco (day game):
The six-hit pitching of Jim Barr in the first game and two-hit hurling of John D'Acquisto and Elias Sosa in the second game enabled the Giants to shut out the Expos in both ends of a doubleheader, 4-0 and 2-0. In the opener, Garry Maddox batted in two of the Giants' runs with a homer and sacrifice fly. D'Acquisto gave up a single by Ron Fairly for the only hit off his deliveries before being removed after running up a count of three balls and no strikes with Fairly again at the plate in the ninth. Sosa completed passing Fairly, with the walk being charged to D'Acquisto, and gave up a double by Mike Jorgensen, which failed to score Fairly, before retiring the side. The Giants scored in the third on a walk to D'Acquisto, singles by Mike Phillips and Chris Speier and sacrifice fly by Maddox. Their other run in the seventh counted on a single by Gary Matthews, balk by Steve Rogers and single by Chris Arnold.

Cardinals 9, Astros 1 at St. Louis (day game):
In a game that saw two brothers pitch against each other, Bob Forsch hurled the Cardinals to a 9-1 victory over the Astros, who used Ken Forsch as one of their relievers. Bob scattered eight hits and gave up the Astros' lone run in the first inning on a double by Cesar Cedeno and single by Bob Watson. Ken worked the last two innings and yielded four hits and three runs, one run coming on an inside-the-park homer by Jose Cruz. The Cardinals also had a homer by Ken Reitz off Larry Dierker, who was the Astros' starter and loser.
