Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 7, Orioles 5 at Boston (day game):
Juan Marichal, coming off the disabled list for his first appearance since May 15, pitched six innings in relief and gained the victory when the Red Sox defeated the Orioles, 7-5. Rick Wise, who started for the Red Sox, left the mound with a sore shoulder after walking Bobby Grich with none out in the fourth inning. Marichal, relieving, got off to a shaky start, giving up a single by Boog Powell, pass to Don Baylor and three-run double by Earl Williams before settling down to hold the Orioles hitless the rest of the way. The Red Sox, who were losing, 5-4, tied the score in the fifth on a double by Carl Yastrzemski, a wild pitch and sacrifice by Dwight Evans. Yastrzemski then singled in the seventh, Rico Petrocelli walked and Evans tripled to break the tie and enable Marichal to come out a winner.

A's 3, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
Stolen bases by Bill North and Herb Washington set up two runs after two were out in the eighth inning to enable the Athletics to defeat the White Sox, 3-2. North started the uprising with a single and pilfered second. The theft was his third of the game. Sal Bando followed with a single, driving in North and tying the score at 2-2. Washington then ran for Bando, stole second and counted what proved to be the winning run when Reggie Jackson singled. The A's got their first run in the second. Joe Rudi was hit by a pitch and completed his journey around the sacks on a single by Gene Tenace, forceout of Tenace by Angel Mangual and infield out by Dick Green. Vida Blue, who gained his fifth straight victory, fell behind when Buddy Bradford singled and Dick Allen homered for the White Sox runs in the seventh.

Indians 8, Yankees 2 at Cleveland (night game):
Buddy Bell, who drove in four runs in the previous night's game, accounted for three more RBIs with a bases-loaded double to lead the Indians to an 8-2 victory over the Yankees. Bell's double came in the third inning, breaking a 1-1 tie, after the Indians had filled the sacks on a single by George Hendrick, double by Charlie Spikes and pass to John Ellis. The Indians iced the verdict with three unearned runs off Sparky Lyle in the eighth. Fritz Peterson, with relief help from Tom Buskey, gained his first victory since July 5.

Royals 4, Rangers 0 at Kansas City (night game):
Nelson Briles, with relief help from Steve Mingori, who retired the last two batters, received credit for his 100th major league victory when the Royals defeated the Rangers, 4-0. Briles won 97 games with the Cardinals and Pirates before being acquired by the Royals in a deal last December. Fergie Jenkins, who had a string of four victories for the Rangers, made a wild pickoff throw to allow the Royals to score an unearned run in the second inning. The Royals clung to that slim lead until the eighth when they broke the game apart with three runs. George Brett and Fran Healy singled and Fred Patek walked to load the bases. Vada Pinson doubled, driving in two runs, and Cookie Rojas added the last tally with a sacrifice fly.

Tigers 4, Brewers 1 at Milwaukee (night game):
Making his first major league start, Dave Lemanczyk allowed only four hits before giving way to John Hiller in the eighth inning as the Tigers defeated the Brewers, 4-1. Lemanczyk yielded a single by Don Money in the eighth before being lifted. After Hiller relieved, Money advanced as Tim Johnson was retired and scored on a single by George Scott. The Tigers counted twice in the fifth on a triple by Ed Brinkman, single by Gene Lamont, forceout by Ron LeFlore, a stolen base and single by Gary Sutherland. Bill Freehan singled in the sixth, moved up on an infield out and scored on a double by Aurelio Rodriguez. Singles by Lamont, LeFlore and Sutherland produced the Tigers' last tally in the eighth.

Angels 3, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
The Angels bunched four hits for three runs in the fourth inning and defeated the Twins, 3-2, in a game stopped by rain with one out in the top half of the seventh. In the fourth, Rudy Meoli doubled and Frank Robinson, Bruce Bochte and Bobby Valentine singled to produce the Angels' runs. Bobby Darwin homered in the Twins' half of the fourth and their other run scored in the fifth when Glenn Borgmann was safe on an error, Eric Soderholm sacrificed and Larry Hisle singled.

Dodgers 2, Padres 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Stolen bases by Bill Buckner and Davey Lopes led to the Dodgers' runs in a 2-1 victory over the Padres, who lost to the West Division leaders for the 11th straight time this season. In the first inning, Buckner bunted safely, stole second and scored on a single by Steve Garvey. Lopes walked in the third, stole second and came home on a single by Buckner. Willie McCovey homered for the Padres in the fourth. Don Sutton, who started for the Dodgers, was kayoed in the ninth when Gene Locklear and Nate Colbert led off with singles, but Mike Marshall saved the game. Derrel Thomas, attempting to sacrifice, forced Locklear at third. Dave Roberts then grounded into a double play.

Expos 3, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Hitless in 15 trips, Willie Davis broke out of his slump with a homer in the third inning and the game-winning single for the Expos in the ninth to defeat the Phillies, 3-2. After Davis' homer in the third, Bob Bailey also hit a round-tripper for the Expos in the sixth. The Phillies came back with a circuit clout by Jay Johnstone in the seventh and tied the score in the eighth when Larry Bowa tripled and Mike Schmidt singled.

Pirates 3, Cardinals 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
A single by Richie Hebner in the 14th inning scored Ed Kirkpatrick and gave the Pirates a 3-2 victory over the Cardinals, who were stopped on their six-game winning streak. The Cards counted their runs in the fourth when Ted Simmons singled and Joe Torre homered. The Pirates came back with the tying pair in their half. Al Oliver produced the first run with a homer. Willie Stargell and Dave Parker followed with a single and advanced on a wild pitch. Stargell was retired in a rundown on a grounder by Bob Roberston. After a passed ball and intentional pass to Manny Sanguillen, Mario Mendoza was safe on an error by Ted Sizemore as Parker scored.

Reds 9, Giants 4 at San Francisco (night game):
Cesar Geronimo tripled in the third inning and homered in the fourth, each time setting off a four-run outburst, to spark the Reds to a 9-4 victory over the Giants. After hitting his triple, Geronimo scored on a single by Pete Rose. The Reds went on to add three other runs in the stanza with the aid of two walks given up by Ed Halicki, two wild pitches, an error by the Giants' starter and single by Ken Griffey. In addition to Geronimo's homer in the fourth, the Reds scored two runs on a double by Darrel Chaney.
