Today's scores and summaries:

Rangers 12, White Sox 5 at Chicago (day game):
Jeff Burroughs collected four hits, including a grand-slam homer, and drove in six runs to help power the Rangers to a 12-5 victory over the White Sox. The Rangers bunched singles by Dave Nelson, Jim Sundberg, Alex Johnson and Burroughs for two runs in the third inning before putting the game away with five runs in the fourth. A single by Jim Fregosi, pass to Sundberg and single by Cesar Tovar produced the first tally. After Johnson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Burroughs whacked his grand slam off Jim Kaat. Burroughs drove in another run with a single in the eighth before the Rangers closed out their scoring with three in the ninth, two coming home on a triple by Joe Lovitto. Bill Melton homered with two men on base as a parting gesture for the White Sox in their half of the final frame.

Orioles 6, Tigers 2 at Detroit (day game):
Tommy Davis and Don Baylor hit two-run homers off Mickey Lolich in the first inning to start the Orioles off to a 6-2 victory over the Tigers. Mark Belanger was on base with a single when Davis homered. Bobby Grich followed with a single ahead of Baylor's blast. Earl Williams added a homer for the Orioles in the fourth.

Angels 4, Royals 3 at Kansas City (day game):
With three hits in three official trips, Bruce Bochte drove in one run and scored two to pace the Angels to a 4-3 victory over the Royals. In the third inning, after a single by Bochte and double by Mickey Rivers, Leroy Stanton batted in both runners with a two-bagger. Bochte doubled in the fourth and scored on a single by Rivers. What proved to be the deciding run followed in the eighth on a single by Bobby Valentine, sacrifice by Ellie Rodriguez and single by Bochte. Amos Otis had three hits for the Royals, including a double and homer.

Indians 7, Brewers 6 at Milwaukee (day game):
Although George Hendrick hit two homers and Charlie Spikes and Oscar Gamble rapped one apiece, the Indians were able to defeat the Brewers, 7-6, only because on Money committed his second error of the season. Hendrick and Spikes hit back-to-back homers in the first, but the Brewers erupted for five runs in their half. Money singled for his first of four hits and Dave May and George Scott doubled to kayo Steve Arlin before the Indians' starter could retire a batter. Bruce Ellingsen, who relieved and pitched 5 2/3 innings, received credit for his first major league victory. Gamble hit his homer in the fourth and the Indians tied the score in the fifth when Frank Duffy singled and Hendrick rapped his second round-tripper. With one out in the sixth, Buddy Bell was safe on Money's error, Luis Alvarado singled and John Lowenstein walked. After Eduardo Rodriguez replaced Jim Colborn, Duffy singled to drive in two runs. The Brewers fell short with a run in the eighth on singles by Tim Johnson, Don Money and Dave May.

Yankees 6, Red Sox 2 at New York (day game):
Playing before an Oldtimers Day crowd of 50,828, largest turnout in the A. L. so far this season, the Yankees defeated the Red Sox, 6-2. The Yankees loaded the bases in the second inning on a single by Bill Sudakis, an error and a walk and scored three runs on a double by Sandy Alomar. An infield hit by Elliott Maddox, a sacrifice and double by Sudakis added a run in the third and the Yankees' final pair counted in the eighth on a single by Alomar and homer by Jim Mason.

Dodgers 5, Astros 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Scoring five runs in the first inning on homers by Willie Crawford and Von Joshua, the Dodgers defeated the Astros, 5-1, behind the four-hit hurling of Andy Messersmith, who posted his seventh straight victory. Bill Buckner singled ahead of Crawford's circuit clout. Steve Garvey then singled, Ron Cey walked and Joshua, filling in for Jim Wynn, who was given the day off, hit his first homer of the season. Messersmith lost his bid for a shutout in the eighth when the Astros scored their run on a walk to Milt May and singles by Bob Watson and Cliff Johnson.

Mets 3, Expos 0 at Montreal (night game):
Jon Matlack scattered seven hits and pitched the Mets to a 3-0 victory over the Expos. The Mets counted their initial run off Steve Renko in the first inning on a single by Bud Harrelson, sacrifice by Felix Millan and single by Cleon Jones. Wayne Garrett homered in the fourth and the final run followed in the seventh on singles by Harrelson and Jones around a pass to Millan.

Cubs 4, Pirates 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Bill Madlock collected four hits and had a hand in three of the Cubs' runs in a 4-3 victory over the Pirates. In the fourth inning, two walks and a single by Jerry Morales loaded the bases and set the stage for a two-run single by Madlock. Richie Hebner, who had four hits for the Pirates, tripled and counted on a single by Dave Parker in the home half of the fourth. The Cubs made it 3-1 in the seventh when Madlock singled, moved up on a walk and scored on a single by Steve Swisher. Billy Williams doubled in the eighth and gave way on the paths to Jim Tyrone, who registered what proved to be the winning run on an infield hit by Andre Thornton and sacrifice fly by Morales. A double by Manny Sanguillen, infield out and sacrifice fly by Rennie Stennett gave the Pirates one run back in their half of the seventh before they fell short with their final marker in the ninth on a double by Art Howe, an error and single by Hebner. Dave LaRoche, appearing as the Cubs' fourth pitcher, struck out Al Oliver to end the game.

Giants 3, Braves 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Chris Speier and Dave Rader hit homers for the Giants in support of Jim Barr, who yielded only four hits and defeated the Braves, 3-1, for his fifth straight victory. The Giants scored once in the first inning on a single by Tito Fuentes, double by Gary Thomasson and infield out by Ed Goodson before the Braves picked up their run in the fourth on a double by Darrell Evans and single by Dusty Baker. Speier broke the tie with his homer in the fourth and Rader provided an insurance run with his smash in the fifth.

Cardinals 4, Phillies 3 at St. Louis (night game):
Rallying for two runs in the ninth inning, the Cardinals gained a 4-3 victory to break a tie with the Phillies for first place in the East Division. The Phillies struck for two quick runs in the first inning on a single by Larry Bowa, triple by Mike Schmidt and bad throw home by Joe Torre after fielding a grounder by Willie Montanez. Singles by Jay Johnstone, Bob Boone and Tommy Hutton made it 3-0 in the fourth. The Cardinals picked up one run in their half of the fourth on a single by Ted Sizemore, forceout by Bake McBride, single by Ted Simmons and double by Torre. McBride singled in the eighth and scored on an infield out and single by Jose Cruz. Jerry DaVanon walked in the ninth, moved up on a sacrifice and counted the tying run when Lou Brock singled. Brock then stole second, reached third on a groundout and scored the winning run on a single by McBride. Brock had two stolen bases in the game, bringing his career total to 702 and moving the Cardinal speedster past Honus Wagner into fourth place on the major leagues' all-time list.
