Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 6, White Sox 4 at Chicago (day game):
The Angels used five pinch-hitters, all of whom remained in the game, and got total production from them of six hits, driving in all their runs, in a 6-4 victory over the White Sox. Winston Llenas, Leroy Stanton, Doug Howard and Ellie Rodriguez each hit run-scoring singles as pinch-hitters. After staying in the game, Stanton and Howard added their second RBI singles. Bob Oliver was the only Angels' pinch-hitter to fail. In the seventh inning, singles by Bobby Valentine and John Doherty and pinch-hits by Llenas and Stanton started the Angels' scoring. Frank Robinson doubled in the eighth and counted on a pinch-single by Howard, who took second on the throw. Rodriguez followed with his pinch-hit, scoring Howard. Llenas walked and Stanton singled to drive in Rodriguez. In the ninth, Robinson hit his second double of the game and scored on a single by Howard.

Tigers 4, Indians 3 at Detroit (night game):
An infield hit by Jim Nettles with the bases loaded in the ninth inning and errors by Tom Buskey and Tommy McCraw enabled the Tigers to score three runs to defeat the Indians, 4-3. The Indians, who had a two-run homer by Charlie Spikes, held a 3-1 lead before Gary Sutherland opened the Tigers' rally with a one-out double. Ben Oglivie walked with two away and Bill Freehan singled to load the bases. Nettles then hit a slow roller which McCraw fielded. Sutherland scored and when Buskey, covering first base, mishandled the toss from McCraw, Oglivie also crossed the plate. Aurelio Rodriguez followed with a grounder to Ed Crosby, but McCraw juggled the throw to first and Rodriguez was safe as Freehan came home to score the winning run.

Twins 3, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
A brilliant pitching performance by Al Fitzmorris, who allowed only one hit in the first eight innings, went for naught when the Twins tied the score at 2-2 in the ninth and then defeated the Royals in the 14th inning, 3-2. Bobby Darwin homered for the Twins in the second, but after that Fitzmorris retired 20 straight batters before Danny Thompson singled in the ninth for the Twins' second hit. Jerry Terrell ran for Thompson and advanced to third on a sacrifice and infield out before scoring on a double by pinch-hitter Harmon Killebrew. In the 14th, Marty Pattin was on the mound as the Royals' fourth pitcher of the game when Rod Carew singled. With one out, Larry Hisle also singled, sending Carew to third. The Royals then called on Joe Hoerner in relief, but Tony Oliva hit a sacrifice fly to score Carew.

Brewers 5, Red Sox 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
The Brewers, who had been held scoreless for 22 innings, broke their slump with four runs off Luis Tiant and defeated the Red Sox, 5-3. The Brewers also ended Tiant's string of six consecutive complete-game victories. In the third inning, Robin Yount and Dave May singled. Don Money doubled, driving in Yount with the Brewers' first run. Johnny Briggs and George Scott followed with RBI singles and Darrell Porter added the fourth run with an infield out. Porter also accounted for the Brewers' final tally with a homer off Dick Drago in the seventh. The Brewers almost blew the game in the ninth when Tom Murphy, in relief of Bill Champion, walked Doug Griffin and Dick McAuliffe with the bases loaded, forcing in two runs, before getting Tommy Harper on a grounder for the third out.

A's 10, Rangers 2 at Texas (day game):
Joe Rudi hit a homer, double and two singles, driving in five runs, to lead the Athletics' attack in a 10-2 victory over the Rangers. Jesus Alou started the A's rolling with a homer on the first pitch of the game by David Clyde. Rudi hit his round-tripper in the third, drove in another run with a single in the fifth and rapped his double with the bases loaded in the sixth to score Bill North, Sal Bando and Reggie Jackson.

Braves 1, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Consecutive doubles by Marty Perez and Darrell Evans in the sixth inning decided a pitching duel between Ron Reed and Dave Roberts and gave the Braves a 1-0 victory over the Astros.

Expos 3, Cardinals 2 at Montreal (day game):
After Barry Foote saved the Expos from defeat with a two-out single in the ninth inning, pinch-hitter Hal Breeden singled with the bases loaded in the 13th, also with two out, to defeat the Cardinals, 3-2. The Expos scored a run in the first on two walks and a ground-rule double by Mike Jorgensen. The Cardinals took advantage of an error by Tim Foli to go ahead with two unearned runs in the sixth. Jorgensen drew a pass in the ninth and, following a sacrifice, scored the tying run on Foote's single. In the 13th, Bob Bailey singled and Jorgensen sacrificed. After an intentional pass to Ron Woods, Ken Singleton struck out, but Foote walked to load the bases and Breeden delivered his winning single.

Phillies 2, Cubs 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
The Phillies cashed in on a single by Dave Cash in the seventh inning to defeat the Cubs, 2-1. The Phillies scored their first run on a pass with the bases loaded. In the second, with two out, Tommy Hutton singled and stopped at third on a double by Bob Boone. The Cubs then passed Mike Anderson intentionally, figuring that Ron Schueler would be an easy out, but Bill Bonham walked his mound opponent to force in Hutton. The Cubs tied the score in the third when Jose Cardenal singled, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and crossed the plate on a single by Andre Thornton. In the seventh, Anderson walked and Jay Johnstone, batting for Schueler, struck out as Anderson stole second. Anderson advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored the deciding run when Cash singled.

Pirates 4, Mets 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Richie Zisk homered in the ninth inning to give the Pirates a 4-3 victory over the Mets. All three of the Mets' runs off Jerry Reuss were unearned on errors by Bob Robertson and Frank Taveras. The Pirates tied the score at 3-3 in the fourth. Singles by Manny Sanguillen, Robertson, Art Howe and Taveras produced the first two runs and a third crossed the plate when Cleon Jones let Taveras' hit get past him in left field.
