Today's scores and summaries:

Royals 3, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Accounting for all of the Royals' scoring, Fred Patek doubled home two runs in the eighth inning and drove in another with a single in 10th to beat the Orioles, 3-2. Jim Palmer, making his second start for the Orioles since coming off the disabled list, pitched seven scoreless innings. The Royals broke through against reliever Grant Jackson in the eighth when Jim Wohlford walked, George Brett singled and Patek doubled. The Orioles chased Paul Splittorff in their half and tied the score with a single by Rich Coggins, pass to Paul Blair, single by Tommy Davis and sacrifice fly by Bobby Grich. With Bob Reynolds on the mound for the Orioles in the 10th, Wohlford singled, took second on a sacrifice by Brett, moved to third on an infield out by Fran Healy and scored on Patek's single. Steve Mingori was the winner in relief.

Twins 7, Red Sox 4 at Boston (day game):
The Twins hit for the cycle in the fifth inning, getting a homer, triple, double and two singles, to score four runs en route to a 7-4 victory over the Red Sox. Craig Kusick homered for the Twins in the second, but the Red Sox held a 4-1 lead before the Twins began their outburst with a single by Bobby Darwin and homer by Harmon Killebrew in the fifth. Eric Soderholm followed with a double and scored on a single by Kusick before Jerry Terrell tripled to cap the inning. Dwight Evans of the Red Sox tied the A. L. record for most putouts by a right fielder in one game, nine.

Brewers 4, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Deron Johnson cracked a two-run homer in his role as designated hitter to start the Brewers' scoring in a 4-2 victory over the Angels. Johnson connected for the circuit in the sixth inning after George Scott was hit by a pitch. The Brewers added a run in the seventh on singles by John Vukovich and Ken Berry around a sacrifice by Pedro Garcia. Frank Robinson doubled and Joe Lahoud homered in the Angels' half of the seventh, but the Brewers added an insurance run in the eighth on doubles by Scott and Charlie Moore.

Indians 4, Rangers 0 at Cleveland (day game):
Jim Perry gained his 13th victory with the Indians and posted his third shutout of the season by defeating the Rangers, 4-0. Perry allowed only four hits. Two of the Indians' first three runs were unearned off Steve Hargan, who gave up six hits in 4 1/3 innings. The Indians collected only one more hit the rest of the way, but it was a double by Rusty Torres off David Clyde in the eighth and resulted in a run when Torres moved to third after a long fly by Charlie Spikes and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by John Ellis.

Yankees 2, White Sox 1 at New York (day game):
Two runs in the first on a bases-loaded single by Lou Piniella were enough for the Yankees to defeat the White Sox, 2-1, in a game stopped by rain with one out in the last half of the seventh inning. Sandy Alomar walked, Elliott Maddox doubled and Ron Blomberg drew a pass with one out to set the stage for Piniella's single. The White Sox scored their run in the sixth on a single by Jorge Orta, double by Tony Muser and infield out by Carlos May.

Tigers 4, A's 3 at Oakland (day game):
The relief pitching of John Hiller, who allowed only one hit in the last 4 2/3 innings, enabled the Tigers to defeat the Athletics, 4-3. The Tigers scored twice in the first on singles by Ron LeFlore, Al Kaline and Ben Oglivie, together with a stolen base by LeFlore and error by Glenn Abbott. Dick Sharon made it 4-0 with a two-run homer in the second. The A's came back with a two-run homer by Gene Tenace in the fourth and added another run on a single by Bert Campaneris in the fifth before Hiller took over to gain the victory in relief of Lerrin LaGrow.

Braves 7, Phillies 6 at Atlanta (night game):
A single by Dusty Baker with the bases loaded and two out in the 12th inning brought the Braves a 7-6 victory over the Phillies. Mike Schmidt hit a two-run homer for the Phillies, who held a 4-0 lead before the Braves picked up a pair off Jim Lonborg in the third. The Braves then chased Lonborg and went ahead with four runs in the seventh, but the Phillies tied the score dramatically in the ninth when Mike Anderson hit a pinch-single and Tony Taylor, also pinch-hitting, came through with a homer. In the 13th, the Braves got going with a pinch-single by Paul Casanova. Ralph Garr, trying to sacrifice, forced Casanova, but Marty Perez singled and Darrell Evans walked to load the bases. Ivan Murrell popped up as a pinch-hitter before Baker came through with his game-winning single.

Padres 4, Cubs 3 at Chicago (day game):
A two-run single by Fred Kendall in the fourth inning and two-run homer by Dave Winfield in the eighth carried the Padres to a 4-3 victory over the Cubs. After Kendall's hit in the fourth, the Cubs came back with the tying pair in their half on doubles by Jose Cardenal and Billy Williams, a long fly by Andre Thornton that enabled Williams to take third after the catch and sacrifice fly by Jerry Morales. The Cubs then took the lead in the seventh with successive singles by Steve Swisher, Oscar Zamora and Don Kessinger, but Willie McCovey walked in the eighth and Winfield hit his homer to decide the game in the Padres' favor.

Reds 6, Mets 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
The first N. L. pitcher to win 15 games this season, Jack Billingham hurled the Reds to a 6-2 victory over the Mets. Billingham gave up a run in each of the first two innings before the Reds put their righthander on the road to victory in the fourth when singles by Cesar Geronimo and Dave Concepcion, sacrifice fly by George Foster, single by Pete Rose and double by Joe Morgan produced three runs. Billingham, who had two hits in three trips, singled home one of the Reds' two runs in the fifth inning.

Expos 3, Astros 2 at Montreal (night game):
A walk with the bases loaded in the ninth inning handed the Expos a 3-2 victory over the Astros. Ron Woods led off the stanza with a single and was sacrificed to second by Larry Lintz. After an intentional pass to Willie Davis, Larry Biittner struck out, but Ken Forsch then walked Mike Jorgensen to fill the sacks and also passed Ken Singleton to force in the Expos' winning run. The Astros scored both their runs in the first inning, but Steve Renko homered for the Expos in the third and their tying run followed in the seventh on a walk to Woods, single by Lintz and double play grounder by Davis.

Pirates 4, Dodgers 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Richie Hebner walked, hit two doubles and scored three times and Al Oliver batted in two runs to lead the Pirates to a 4-3 victory over the Dodgers, who suffered their fifth straight defeat. Tom Paciorek singled and Steve Yeager doubled for a Dodger run in the seventh, but a double by Hebner, wild pitch and infield out by Oliver tied the score in the fourth. The Dodgers went ahead again with two runs in the sixth. A double by Steve Garvey and single by Ron Cey produced the first run. After successive forceouts by Joe Ferguson and Paciorek, a single by Yeager and safe squeeze bunt by Andy Messersmith made it 3-1. The Pirates came back with an equalizing pair in their half of the sixth on walks to Hebner and Willie Stargell, single by Richie Zisk and double by Manny Sanguillen. Then in the eighth, Hebner hit his second double and scored what proved to be the deciding run on a single by Oliver. Dave Giusti saved the game for Jerry Reuss, relieving with two men on base and one out in the ninth and inducing Bill Buckner to ground into a double play.

Cardinals 5, Giants 3 at St. Louis (night game):
For the second night in succession, the Cardinals rallied for two runs in the ninth inning, this time on a homer by Reggie Smith, to defeat the Giants, 5-3. Lynn McGlothen, who started for the Cardinals against Mike Caldwell, might have been the winner, but his error on a roller down the first base line by Tito Fuentes with the bases loaded and two out in the seventh inning allowed two unearned runs to score, putting the Giants ahead, 3-2. The Cardinals pulled even in the eighth with singles by Ted Simmons and Ken Reitz and sacrifice fly by Danny Godby, who batted for McGlothen. Mike Garman, taking over for the Cardinals in the ninth, struck out the side, but the Giants were less fortunate in their choice of Randy Moffitt to replace Caldwell. Ted Sizemore singled and on Moffitt's next pitch Smith hit his homer.
