Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 1, Royals 0 at Baltimore (day game):
A double by Paul Blair and single by Brooks Robinson in the ninth inning broke up pitching a duel between Dave McNally and Steve Busby and gave the Orioles a 1-0 victory over the Royals.

Red Sox 9, Twins 6 at Boston (day game):
Although knocked out in the eighth inning, Luis Tiant gained his 19th victory of the season when the Red Sox defeated the Twins, 9-6. The Red Sox built up an 8-0 lead for Tiant before the Twins exploded for six runs in their uprising. Larry Hisle accounted for three runs with a homer and Bobby Darwin drove in two with a single before Diego Segui put a stop to the rally. The Red Sox hit seven doubles during the game, including three by Rick Burleson, two by Dick McAuliffe and one each by Carl Yastrzemski and Tim Blackwell.

Brewers 5, Angels 2 at California (day game):
The Brewers put together five singles for three runs in the third inning to start on their way to a 5-2 victory over the Angels. Bruce Bochte homered with a man on base for the Angels in the first. Tim Johnson started the Brewers' rally with a single in the third. Then after an out, singles by Dave May, Don Money, Charlie Moore and George Scott put the Brewers ahead. Their last two tallies counted in the eighth. Deron Johnson walked. Bobby Mitchell ran for him, stole second and scored on a single by Bob Coluccio. After a single by Tim Johnson and a walk loaded the bases, Money drove in the last run with an infield hit.

Rangers 1, Indians 0 at Cleveland (day game):
Jeff Burroughs hit his 24th homer of the season in the first inning and that was only run Fergie Jenkins needed to pitch the Rangers to a 1-0 victory over the Indians. Burroughs' blow off Fritz Peterson made him the first major league batter with 100 RBIs this year. The shutout was the fourth of the season for Jenkins, who turned in his 22nd complete game.

Yankees 9, White Sox 4 at New York (day game):
Bidding for his 19th victory, Wood was knocked out in the fourth inning and drew his 14th defeat when the Yankees beat the White Sox, 9-4. Thurman Munson hit two doubles, drove in three runs and scored one before Elliott Maddox forced Wood's exit with a homer in the fourth. The Yankees added a run off Skip Pitlock in the sixth and put the game away against Rich Gossage by scoring three more times in the seventh. Rudy May, who started for the Yankees, was forced to leave the mound after pulling his hamstring on the pitch that Bill Melton hit for a homer in the fourth inning. Mike Wallace was the winner in relief, but the Yankees also called on Cecil Upshaw and Sparky Lyle before the game was over.

A's 13, Tigers 3 at Oakland (day game):
Reggie Jackson and Gene Tenace each homered with two men on base when the Athletics turned a close game into a rout by scoring nine runs in the eighth inning to trounce the Tigers, 13-3. Pat Bourque singled with the bases loaded to drive in the first two runs in the outburst. After another run scored on an error, Jackson hit his homer. Joe Rudi then walked, Phil Garner singled and Tenace added his round-tripper for the final blow.

Phillies 7, Braves 4 at Atlanta (day game):
Homers by Bill Robinson, Mike Schmidt and Willie Montanez, together with two runs forced in on passes with the bases loaded, featured the Phillies' scoring in a 7-4 victory over the Braves. Robinson hit for the circuit in the second inning, but the Braves came back with three runs in the third, two scoring on a circuit clout by Ralph Garr. Doubles by Jay Johnstone and Bob Boone in the fourth and homer by Schmidt in the fifth tied the score before the Phillies went ahead with three runs in the seventh. Dave Cash and Larry Bowa singled, Schmidt walked to load the bases and Montanez hit a sacrifice fly to break the tie. After Del Unser drew a pass to fill the sacks again, Johnstone and Robinson walked, each forcing in a run. Montanez added an insurance tally with a homer in the ninth.

Cubs 14, Padres 6 at Chicago (day game):
Although tagged for 11 hits, Steve Stone was able to last the route for his first complete game of the season as the Cubs piled up 15 hits to defeat the Padres, 14-6. Stone joined in the attack with a single that drove in two of the Cubs' six runs in the third inning. Steve Swisher and Jose Cardenal had homers for the Cubs, while Willie McCovey hit one for the Padres.

Reds 6, Mets 5 at Cincinnati (day game):
An intentional pass to Tony Perez backfired on the Mets in the seventh inning when Dave Concepcion followed with a three-run homer to carry the Reds to a 6-5 victory. The Mets built up a 3-0 lead before the Reds began their comeback with two runs in the third on a pair of walks and singles by Perez and Concepcion. Joe Morgan singled in the fifth, stole second and scored the tying run on a single by Perez. Pete Rose doubled in the seventh and, after two out, the Mets decided to walk Perez, only to have Jon Matlack serve up a gopher pitch to Concepcion. The Mets rallied for two runs in the ninth on a pass to Rusty Staub and homer by Cleon Jones, but Dick Baney came in to get Don Hahn on a pop fly and Will McEnaney took over as the Reds' sixth pitcher of the game to retire the last two batters.

Astros 3, Expos 0 at Montreal (day game):
Milt May and Bob Watson whacked homers to carry the Astros to a 3-0 victory over the Expos behind the five-hit hurling of Dave Roberts. May hit his homer after a single by Watson in the seventh inning. Watson then provided an insurance run with his round-tripper in the ninth.

Pirates 10, Dodgers 3 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Led by Bob Robertson, who hit a homer and two doubles and drove in four runs, the Pirates handed the slumping Dodgers their sixth straight defeat, 10-3. The Pirates scored a run in the first inning on a double by Rennie Stennett and single by Manny Sanguillen and added two in the third on singles by Stennett, Sanguillen and Willie Stargell, together with an error by Geoff Zahn, before breaking the game wide open in the fifth. Al Oliver and Richie Zisk singled and Robertson drove them home with a double. After an intentional pass to Richie Hebner, Frank Taveras singled to the load bases. Greg Shanahan then became the Dodgers' third pitcher, following Zahn and Charlie Hough, and walked Larry Demery and Stennett to force in two runs. Robertson homered with Zisk on base in the sixth. Zisk accounted for the Pirates' final run with a round-tripper in the eighth. Demery, who pitched for the Pirates, gave up an unearned run in the fifth and yielded a two-run homer by Willie Crawford in the eighth before Dave Giusti came in to hurl the final frame.

Cardinals 4, Giants 1 at St. Louis (day game):
John Curtis pitched a five-hitter and assured his victory with a two-run single in the sixth inning as the Cardinals defeated the Giants, 4-1. A single by Reggie Smith and triple by Bake McBride started the Cards' scoring in the first inning. Tim McCarver singled, Ted Simmons doubled and Mike Tyson hit a sacrifice fly for another run in the fourth before the Cardinals loaded the bases in the sixth on singles by McBride and Simmons and pass to Tyson to set the stage for Curtis' clinching single. The Giants' lone run off the lefthander was unearned on an error by Simmons in the eighth.
