Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, Twins 1 at Baltimore (night game):
A homer by Earl Williams with two men on base capped a four-run outburst in the sixth inning as the Orioles defeated the Twins, 4-1. The Twins had a chance to break loose against Dave McNally in the second, loading the bases with none out, but after one run scored on a grounder by Danny Thompson, Steve Brye bounced into a double play. In the Orioles' sixth, Tommy Davis singled, advanced on an infield out and counted the tying run on a single by Don Baylor. After Baylor stole both second and third and Brooks Robinson walked, Williams walloped his game-winning homer.

Red Sox 3, A's 0 at Boston (night game):
Luis Tiant became the first 20-game winner in the major leagues this season, pitching the Red Sox to a 3-0 victory over the Athletics. The shutout was the sixth for the crafty Cuban righthander. A crowd of 35,866 saw Tommy Harper lead off the first inning with a homer off Vida Blue. The Red Sox added two runs in the sixth on singles by Juan Beniquez, Dwight Evans and Carl Yastrzemski and sacrifice fly by Jim Rice.

White Sox 2, Indians 1 at Chicago (night game):
An unearned run proved decisive as the White Sox defeated the Indians, 2-1. The White Sox nicked Fritz Peterson for a run in the fourth inning on a double by Ken Henderson and single by Ron Santo. Then in the sixth, after singles by Santo and Jerry Hairston, Indians' second baseman Angel Hermoso fumbled a grounder by Ed Herrmann and followed with a wild throw to the plate to allow Santo to score. The Indians got their run off Jim Kaat in the ninth on singles by Frank Duffy and Rico Carty around an infield out. The defeat was the third straight in tight games for Peterson, who lost his two previous starts by 1-0 scores to the Twins and Rangers.

Rangers 5, Tigers 2 at Detroit (night game):
The Rangers ripped into Joe Coleman for four runs in the third inning and defeated the Tigers, 5-2, behind the four-hit pitching of Steve Hargan. Joe Coleman walked Joe Lovitto to start the stanza and two extra-base hits -- a triple by Jim Sundberg and double by Dave Nelson -- followed to produce the Rangers' initial pair. After Cesar Tovar singled, Jeff Burroughs hit a sacrifice fly for his 104th RBI. Woodie Fryman replaced Coleman and the Rangers' fourth run of the frame counted subsequently on a single by Jim Spencer. The Tigers reached Hargan for their runs on a double by Al Kaline and homer by Jim Nettles in the seventh.

[DH] Royals 8, Brewers 4 (night game) / Brewers 1, Royals 0 at Milwaukee (night game):
With help from Steve Mingori, Steve Busby gained his 19th victory of the season when the Royals won the opener of a twi-night doubleheader, 8-4, but the Brewers came back to take the nightcap, 1-0, in 13 innings. The Royals knocked out Bill Champion with a four-run barrage in the second inning of the lidlifter on a combination of singles by Tony Solaita, George Brett and Buck Martinez and doubles by Cookie Rojas and Vada Pinson. Solaita then provided the blow that decided the game, hitting a homer after a single by Orlando Cepeda in the third. Busby was chased when the Brewers rallied for three runs in the seventh, but Mingori allowed only one hit in the last 2 2/3 innings. The Brewers won the nightcap when George Scott singled off Lindy McDaniel in the 13th and Johnny Briggs followed with a triple.

Yankees 10, Angels 4 at New York (night game):
Roy White, who got into the Yankees' lineup because Lou Piniella came down with a sore throat, seized the opportunity and rapped a homer, triple and two singles to lead the way to a 10-4 victory over the Angels. White tripled and scored in the first inning, homered with a man on base in the fourth and knocked in two more runs with a single in the fifth. Chris Chambliss contributed three doubles to the Yankee attack.

[DH] Braves 4, Mets 3 (night game) / Braves 6, Mets 0 at Atlanta (night game):
The Braves won the first game of a twi-night doubleheader with the Mets, 4-3, in 10 innings and then completed the sweep with a 6-0 victory in the second game. In the lidlifter, Hank Aaron batted in one run for the Braves and scored another, but in between the Mets counted three times in the sixth on a single by Felix Millan, double by Cleon Jones, pass to Rusty Staub, double by Ed Kranepool and sacrifice fly by Jerry Grote. The Braves tied the score with an unearned run in the ninth. Davey Johnson singled and Craig Robinson, running for him, crossed the plate on an error, an infield out and sacrifice fly by Paul Casanova. In the 10th, Marty Perez singled and Darrell Evans sacrificed. After a strikeout by Rowland Office and intentional pass to Dusty Baker, Mike Lum singled to drive in the winning run. Lew Krausse allowed only one hit in six innings and smashed a two-run homer to feature the Braves' victory in the nightcap. When a blister forced Krausse off the mound, Tom House completed the shutout. Evans also homered among the Braves' 10 hits.

Astros 1, Phillies 0 at Houston (night game):
Larry Dierker yielded only three hits and pitched the Astros to a 1-0 victory over the Phillies. The Astros also collected three hits but decided the game in the sixth inning when Roger Metzger doubled off Dick Ruthven and scored on a single by Bob Watson.

Cardinals 2, Dodgers 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Cardinals clipped Mike Marshall for a run in the ninth inning and defeated the Dodgers, 2-1. Doug Rau, the Dodgers' starting pitcher, scored their run in third, hitting a single and counting on a double by Davey Lopes and sacrifice fly by Jim Wynn. Ted Simmons evened the score with a homer in the sixth. Marshall, who made his 83rd appearance of the season in relief of Rau, yielded a single by Ken Reitz to open the ninth. Luis Melendez ran for Reitz. After a sacrifice by Mike Tyson, Luis Melendez advanced to third following a long fly by Tim McCarver. Lou Brock then singled to drive in the winning run. Earlier in the game, Brock stole his 87th base of the season.

Reds 10, Expos 7 at Montreal (night game):
Johnny Bench batted in four runs with a single and homer to lead the Reds' attack in a 10-7 victory over the Expos, who also had a four-RBI batter in Barry Foote. A double by Joe Morgan and single by Bench started the Reds' scoring in the first inning. However, the Expos came back to take a 3-1 lead with the aid of a homer by Willie Davis before the Reds exploded for six runs in the fifth, three counting on Bench's homer. The Reds capped their scoring with three runs in the sixth. Pete Rose was awarded first on catcher's interference by Foote. Morgan and Tony Perez singled to score Rose. When the ball got away from Ken Singleton in right field, Morgan also crossed the plate. Dan Driessen then added a run with a single. Foote hit his homer with two men on base in the Expos' half of the sixth and drove in another run with a single in the seventh, but Clay Carroll protected his victory by pitching scoreless ball in the last two stanzas.

Pirates 6, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Although allowing baserunners in every inning except one, Jerry Reuss came out a winner when the Pirates defeated the Padres, 6-2. The Pirates scored in the first on a single by Al Oliver and double by Willie Stargell, added a tally on singles by Manny Sanguillen and Frank Taveras, together with two infield outs, in the second and got a third run on a homer by Rennie Stennett in the fifth. The Padres broke through with a marker off Reuss on a singles by Gene Locklear, Fred Kendall and Enzo Hernandez in the seventh, but the Pirates pulled away with three runs in the last two stanzas. Reuss was lifted with a man on base and one out in the ninth and Dave Giusti gave up a run on a single by Glenn Beckert before retiring the side.

Cubs 1, Giants 0 at San Francisco (night game):
The Cubs scored on a double by Don Kessinger and two infield outs in the first inning and made that run stand up for a 1-0 victory over the Giants. Jim Barr, who allowed only four hits in seven innings, was the loser. The Giants collected nine hits off Rick Reuschel, but twice failed to score after loading the bases. Reuschel struck out Chris Speier after three errors by Cubs' infielders filled the sacks in the first inning. In the eighth, after the Giants loaded the bases again, Reuschel got out of the jam when pinch-hitter Steve Ontiveros grounded into a forceout.
