Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 4, Brewers 3 at Boston (day game):
The Red Sox snapped an eight-game losing streak when Mario Guerrero hit a bloop single with the bases loaded and two out in the 10th inning to drive in the run that beat the Brewers, 4-3. The Brewers clipped Bill Lee for all their runs in the third on a double by Ken Berry, infield hit by Johnny Briggs, double by Gorman Thomas and single by Bobby Mitchell. The Red Sox came back with two runs in the fourth and tied the score in the fifth when Guerrero doubled and Juan Beniquez singled. In the 10th, Rico Petrocelli singled with two out, Tim McCarver doubled and Dick McAuliffe walked to load the bases before Guerrero singled to give the victory to Reggie Cleveland in relief.

Angels 3, White Sox 1 at California (night game):
Leaping higher than the eight-foot fence in center field, Morris Nettles caught a line drive by Pat Kelly with the bases loaded in the sixth inning to prevent a grand-slam homer and save the Angels' 3-1 victory over the White Sox. Nolan Ryan was the beneficiary of Nettles' catch. The Angels used a safe bunt by Denny Doyle, sacrifice by Tom Egan and single by Orlando Ramirez for a run in the first and added another in the fourth on a walk to Bruce Bochte, single by Joe Lahoud and forceout by Dave Chalk. The White Sox picked up their run in the fifth on singles by Bucky Dent, Lee Richard and Tony Muser, but the Angels clinched the decision with their final tally in the seventh. Frank Robinson was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a single by Chalk and scored on a wild pitch by Terry Forster.

Orioles 3, Indians 2 at Cleveland (day game):
The Orioles were within three outs of tying the 1903 Pirates' major league record of six straight shutouts, but then had to settle for a 3-2 victory over the Indians when Charlie Spikes homered with a man on base in the ninth inning. Ross Grimsley had the Indians under control on four hits until George Hendrick doubled and Spikes snapped the Orioles' shutout string with his round-tripper. However, the Orioles set a new A. L. record for most consecutive scoreless innings, 54, breaking the old mark of 47 by the Indians in 1948. The Orioles scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul Blair in third, added an unearned run in the fourth and completed their triumph over Gaylord Perry when Mark Belanger walked in the seventh, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by Rich Coggins.

Royals 1, Twins 0 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals scored without benefit of a hit in the first inning and Al Fitzmorris made the run stand up for a 1-0 victory over the Twins. Vada Pinson walked and on a run-and-hit play raced to third on an infield out by Cookie Rojas. When John Mayberry bounced out, Pinson scored the run that enabled the Royals to end their eight-game losing streak.

[DH] Tigers 8, Yankees 3 (day game) / Yankees 1, Tigers 0 at New York (night game):
A homer by Graig Nettles and the five-hit pitching of Larry Gura enabled the Yankees to gain a 1-0 victory in the second game of a doubleheader after the Tigers won the first game, 8-3, on the strength of a five-run outburst in the fourth inning. The Tigers opened their big inning in the lidlifter with a run on a walk to Al Kaline and singles by Bill Freehan and Leon Roberts. After a pass to Marvin Lane loaded the bases, Aurelio Rodriguez singled to drive in two runs. A walk to Ed Brinkman filled the sacks again and, after Mike Wallace relieved, Gary Sutherland singled to plate another pair. Freehan added to the Tigers' total with a homer in the seventh. Lou Piniella batted in one run for the Yankees with a double and Nettles accounted for two others with a homer. In the nightcap, Nettles hit his second homer of the day, connecting in the second inning, to enable Gura to win his duel with Woodie Fryman.

Rangers 8, A's 2 at Oakland (day game):
The battery of Steve Hargan and Jim Sundberg stood out as the Rangers defeated the Athletics, 8-2. Hargan pitched a four-hitter and Sundberg drove in four runs with two singles and a squeeze bunt. Mike Hargrove and Joe Lovitto accounted for the Rangers' other RBIs with two apiece. The A's got their runs on homers by Gene Tenace and Joe Rudi.

Giants 6, Braves 0 at Atlanta (night game):
Jim Barr scattered six hits and pitched the Giants to a 6-0 victory over the Braves. The game was marked by five balks -- two called on Barr and three on Phil Niekro, the Braves' loser. A balk by Niekro in the second inning moved Gary Matthews into position to score the Giants' first run on a single by Steve Ontiveros. Another balk by Niekro and a throwing error by Vic Correll produced two runs in the fourth. The Giants iced the contest against Lew Krausse in the eighth, scoring their final three runs. Matthews drove in one with a single and Ontiveros accounted for two with a double.

Cubs 3, Phillies 0 at Chicago (day game):
Despite a yield of 10 hits, Bill Bonham posted a shutout and pitched the Cubs to a 3-0 victory over the Phillies. Bonham escaped from his major threat in the third inning, striking out Mike Schmidt and getting Willie Montanez on an infield out after the Phillies had loaded the bases with one away on singles by Steve Carlton, Dave Cash and Larry Bowa. Carlton was less fortunate in the Cubs' half, giving up a walk to Bonham and then falling victim to a homer by Rick Monday. The Cubs added another run in the eighth on doubles by Bill Madlock and Steve Swisher.

Reds 7, Dodgers 5 at Cincinnati (day game):
After falling behind by five runs, the Reds battled back to gain a 7-5 victory over the Dodgers when Joe Morgan homered off Mike Marshall with a man on base in the eighth inning. A double by Davey Lopes led to a run in the first inning before the Dodgers knocked out Clay Kirby and made it 5-0 in the second. Bill Buckner accounted for two runs with a homer. The Reds got back into the game when Dan Driessen and Cesar Geronimo singled and Dave Concepcion homered in their half of the second. The Reds then tied the score in the fifth on a homer by Johnny Bench, pass to Driessen and singles by Geronimo and Concepcion. Marshall relieved in the eighth for his 92nd appearance of the season, tying his own major league record set with the Expos last season. After putting down a Reds' threat in that inning, Marshall wound up the loser in the next stanza when Pete Rose walked and Morgan hit his homer.

Padres 8, Astros 4 at Houston (day game):
The Padres ended their 10-game losing streak by erupting for six runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Astros, 8-4. Paul Siebert, lefthander from Columbus (Southern), made his major league debut with the Astros and allowed only four hits and two runs before being removed for a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning when the Astros scored three times to take a 4-2 lead. Mike Cosgrove relieved and was the principal victim of the Padres' rally in the eighth. Enzo Hernandez singled and Cito Gaston doubled in pinch-hitting roles to start the uprising. Hernandez crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Derrel Thomas. After Glenn Beckert grounded out, Johnny Grubb drove in the tying run with a single. Dave Winfield doubled to chase Cosgrove. Jerry Johnson walked Randy Elliott to load the bases. Willie McCovey then batted for Mike Ivie and singled, driving in two runs to put the Padres ahead. Another pair followed before Ramon de los Santos ended the scoring on singles by Chris Cannizzaro and Hernandez.

Pirates 6, Expos 5 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates, under pressure to maintain their lead of 1½ games over the Cardinals in the East Division race, scored on a single by Dave Parker in the 12th inning to defeat the Expos, 6-5. The Expos, who suffered their sixth straight defeat, took a 2-0 lead in the first on a walk, triple by Willie Davis and infield out by Bailey. Hal Breeden drove in two more runs with a single in the seventh, but the Pirates erupted to take a 5-4 lead in their half. Manny Sanguillen and Ed Kirkpatrick singled and Richie Zisk walked to load the bases. Paul Popovich batted in two runs with a pinch-single and three more counters followed on singles by Rennie Stennett, Richie Hebner and Al Oliver. The Expos tied the score in the ninth when Larry Lintz singled, stole second and scored on a pinch-single by Larry Biittner. In the 12th, Hebner singled with one out, Miguel Dilone walked and Parker won the game with his single, scoring Hebner.

Cardinals 2, Mets 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Although Lou Brock failed to add to his stolen base total of 101, the Cardinals' fleet-footed outfielder provided a victory for his club's cause, driving in a run with a bases-loaded single in the ninth inning to defeat the Mets, 2-1. The Mets scored their run off Bob Gibson in the second inning on a double by John Milner and single by Wayne Garrett. The Cards caught up against Jon Matlack in the fourth. Ted Sizemore walked, took second after a long fly by Reggie Smith and scored on a double by Ted Simmons. In the ninth, Simmons walked and was forced by Bake McBride. Ken Reitz singled, sending McBride to third. After an intentional pass to Danny Godby, Ron Hunt made his first appearance in a Cardinal uniform after being obtained from the Expos and forced McBride at the plate. Brock then broke up the game with his single, giving the Cardinals their sixth straight victory.
