Today's scores and summaries:
Yankees 3, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Mike Wallace, making his first A. L. start after winning five straight games in relief, joined with Dick Tidrow in pitching the Yankees to a 3-0 victory over the Orioles. Wallace allowed only three hits before being lifted with two men on base and two out in the eighth inning. Tidrow retired Tommy Davis and then gave up one hit while setting down the Orioles in the ninth. The Yankees broke through for all their runs off Jim Palmer in the eighth on singles by Roy White, Bobby Murcer, Graig Nettles and Chris Chambliss and a double by Lou Piniella.
Rangers 2, White Sox 2 at Chicago (night game):
The Rangers and White Sox had to settle for 2-2 tie when rain forced the postponement of their game after six innings. Mike Hargrove and Lenny Randle drove in the Rangers' runs off Stan Bahnsen in the first inning. The White Sox, after picking up a run off Steve Hargan in their half of the first on a triple by Nyls Nyman and sacrifice fly by Jorge Orta, tied the score when Ken Henderson homered in the sixth.
Red Sox 3, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Dick McAuliffe with the bases loaded in the eighth inning drove in the winning run for the Red Sox, who ended their three-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Indians. John Ellis drove in a run for the Indians with a single in the first before the Red Sox moved ahead with two in the fifth on a single by Rico Petrocelli, double by McAuliffe, sacrifice by Rick Burleson and single by Tommy Harper. Charlie Spikes tied the score with a homer in the sixth. Carl Yastrzemski doubled in the eighth and Deron Johnson sacrificed. Bernie Carbo and Petrocelli walked to load the bases. After Tom Buskey took the mound in relief of Jim Perry, McAuliffe hit his fly to left field, scoring Yastrzemski.
Tigers 9, Brewers 7 at Detroit (night game):
John Hiller set an A. L. record for most victories by a relief pitcher, winning for the 17th time this season, when Tom Veryzer hit his first major league homer with a man on base in the 10th inning to defeat the Brewers, 9-7. The former record was held by Dick Radatz, who won 16 games in relief with the Red Sox in 1964. The Brewers took an early 3-0 lead before the Tigers tied the score with a three-run homer by Bill Freehan in the fourth. The Brewers forged ahead again with four runs in the fifth. Ken Berry singled for his third RBI of the game, Johnny Briggs tripled and Darrell Porter capped the outburst with a round-tripper. The Tigers came back with a two-run double by Leon Roberts in the sixth and tied the score with another two-run double by Ben Oglivie in the seventh. Hiller took over as the Tigers' third pitcher of the game in the eighth and was a winner in the 10th when Roberts singled and Veryzer hit his homer. Veryzer entered the lineup when Ed Brinkman was hit below the elbow by a pitched ball in the fifth inning.
A's 2, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
An unearned run enabled the Athletics to defeat the Twins, 2-1, in a duel between Ken Holtzman and Bert Blyleven. The A's opened the scoring with a run in the first inning on a single by Bill North, infield out by Bert Campaneris and single by Sal Bando. The Twins came back in their half with a triple by Larry Hisle and single by Bobby Darwin. The A's broke the tie in the eighth after North reached base on an error by Danny Thompson. North moved to second on a single by Campaneris, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bando.
[DH] Reds 9, Braves 6 (day game) / Reds 6, Braves 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
With a crowd of 22,628 on hand to boost their attendance to 2,032,383 for a new club record, the Reds slugged their way to a sweep of a doubleheader with the Braves, 9-6 and 6-2. Three grand-slam homers marked the day's action. Darrell Evans hit one for the Braves off Tom Carroll in the second inning of the lidlifter after a walk to Davey Johnson, an error and single by Ron Reed loaded the bases. The Reds came back with a grand slam by Cesar Geronimo in their half of the second. Dave Concepcion singled, stole second and third and scored on a wild throw by Vic Correll to start the stanza. A walk to Ken Griffey, pass to Darrel Chaney, forceout by Hal King and infield hit by Pete Rose then loaded the bases for the first jackpot wallop of Geronimo's major league career. The Braves tied the score at 5-5 in fourth, but Geronimo and Johnny Bench walked in the fifth and Dan Driessen drove them home to put the Reds ahead to stay. Tony Perez added a homer in the seventh. Bench drove in all of the Reds' runs in the nightcap, hitting a two-run homer in the first inning and a grand slam in the fourth. Evans homered for one of the Braves' runs off Pat Darcy, who was a winner in his major league debut with the Reds.
Expos 2, Cubs 1 at Montreal (night game):
A sacrifice fly by Barry Foote in the eighth inning provided the Expos with a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. Mike Torrez, who pitched a five-hitter for the Expos, gave up the Cubs' run in the first on a walk to Don Kessinger, groundout by Jose Cardenal and single by Jerry Morales. Torrez helped himself to the tying run in the fifth, hitting a single and completing the journey around the bases on an infield out by Larry Lintz and singles by Tim Foli and Willie Davis. Davis led off the eighth with another single and Ron Woods was safe on an error. Mike Jorgensen flied out, but Bob Bailey singled to load the bases before Foote came up and hit his sacrifice fly.
Cardinals 12, Mets 5 at New York (night game):
Reggie Smith drove in four runs with a homer and single and the Cardinals picked up three other runs on an error by Dave Schneck to defeat the Mets, 12-5. The Mets jumped on Bob Gibson for four runs in the fourth inning, starting their outburst with a homer by John Milner, before the Cardinals struck back for six runs in the sixth. Ted Sizemore singled and Smith hit his homer to open the rally. Singles by Ted Simmons and Ken Reitz and a pass to Danny Godby loaded the bases. Simmons scored on a passed ball. After Ron Hunt walked to reload the sacks, Keith Hernandez hit a line drive that Schneck dropped in center field and three runs scored on the error. Smith accounted for his two other RBIs with a bases-loaded single in the eighth.
Phillies 6, Pirates 4 at Philadelphia (night game):

When Willie Montanez followed with a double, the Pirates brought in Bruce Kison, who failed in relief. Pinch-hitter Jay Johnstone singled, driving in Montanez to tie the score at 4-4. Del Unser then came up as the Phillies' third pinch-hitter of the inning and smashed a homer for the winning margin. The Pirates, in building up their 4-0 lead, started with two runs in the third inning on a bases-loaded single by Al Oliver. Ed Kirkpatrick doubled, Frank Taveras singled and Rennie Stennett hit a sacrifice fly for another run in the fourth and their fourth tally counted in the seventh on singles by Willie Stargell, Richie Zisk and Taveras.

Kendall's clout in the second inning broke a 1-1 tie. The Padres then clinched the verdict with two runs in the sixth on singles by Jerry Turner and Johnny Grubb, an error on a bunt by Randy Elliott and single by Mike Ivie.
Dodgers 11, Giants 0 at San Francisco (night game):
Manager Walter Alston called on Al Downing for his first start since August 13 and the Dodgers' veteran lefthander responded by allowing only two hits in his first complete game of the season and shutting out the Giants, 11-0. The Dodgers piled up 15 hits in support of Downing. Bill Russell drove in four runs with three singles and an infield out, while Ron Cey and Steve Garvey each accounted for two RBIs.
