Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 1, Orioles 0 at Baltimore (day game):
Gaylord Perry gained his 20th victory of the season, but it took a gift run for the Indians' ace to defeat the Orioles, 1-0. Perry yielded five hits. Ross Grimsley, who gave up nine hits, matched Perry in a scoreless duel until the ninth inning when he beat himself on a pass with the bases loaded. Buddy Bell singled, Rusty Torres was safe on an error by Tim Nordbrook and Oscar Gamble walked to fill the sacks. Grimsley then passed John Lowenstein on four straight pitches to force in Bell.

Angels 6, White Sox 2 at Chicago (day game):
Nolan Ryan became a 20-game winner for the second straight year by pitching the Angels to a 6-2 victory over the White Sox. The fastballing righthander allowed only three hits and struck out seven to increase his season's total to 337. John Doherty homered for the Angels, but Pat Kelly scored twice for the White Sox to produce a 2-2 tie before the Angels broke away with a run in the third on a pass to Morris Nettles, a single by Denny Doyle and sacrifice fly by Bruce Bochte. Dave Chalk tripled and Doherty singled for another run in the fourth. Joe Lahoud added the final tallies with a bases-loaded single in the fifth.

Yankees 10, Tigers 2 at Detroit (day game):
Bobby Murcer and Lou Piniella drove in seven runs between them to lead the Yankees to a 10-2 victory over the Tigers. Piniella batted in a run with a double in the first inning. Murcer plated a pair with a double and Piniella hit a sacrifice fly in the second. Murcer batted in two more with a single in the eighth and Piniella followed with a single for the Yankees' final marker. Larry Gura gained his fourth straight victory. After Al Kaline accounted for a Tiger run in the seventh with the 2,992nd hit of his career, Sparky Lyle relieved and finished the game.

Brewers 9, Red Sox 5 at Milwaukee (day game):
A grand-slam homer by Gorman Thomas and two-run triple by Tim Johnson powered the Brewers to a 9-5 victory over the Red Sox. Thomas hit his homer off Luis Tiant in the first inning after Don Money and George Scott singled and Johnny Briggs walked. Johnson's triple in the third followed passes to Thomas and Mike Hegan. Pedro Garcia singled to drive in Johnson and later scored himself on a single by Ken Berry. The Red Sox had homers by Fred Lynn and Bob Montgomery. Lynn's blow was the first of his major league career.

Twins 5, Royals 2 at Minnesota (day game):
After giving up two runs in the first inning, Joe Decker bore down the rest of the way and pitched the Twins to a 5-2 victory over the Royals. A pass to Jim Wohlford, single by Hal McRae and double by Tony Solaita accounted for the Royals' runs. The Twins tied the count in the third when Bobby Darwin singled with the bases loaded. Four singles for two runs sent the Twins ahead in the sixth and they added their final tally in the eighth on a single by Pat Bourque and triple by Jerry Terrell that scored Eric Soderholm, who ran for Bourque.

A's 4, Rangers 1 at Texas (night game):
A two-run homer by Sal Bando sent the Athletics on their way to a 4-1 victory over the Rangers. Singles by Cesar Tovar and Mike Hargrove, around a sacrifice, accounted for the Rangers' run in the first inning. After Bill North singled to score Bando with the tying run in the second, Reggie Jackson walked and Bando hit his homer for the deciding blow in the third. The A's added an insurance marker in the seventh when Jackson singled, stole second and scored on a single by Claudell Washington.

Dodgers 7, Reds 1 at Los Angeles (day game):
Breaking a close game apart with a grand-slam homer by Jim Wynn, the Dodgers defeated the Reds, 7-1, to assume a 2½-game lead in the West Division race. Fred Norman batted in a Reds' run with a single in the fifth inning, but the lefthander was chased in the sixth when the Dodgers moved ahead, 2-1. With Pedro Borbon on the mound for the Reds in the seventh, Steve Yeager beat out an infield hit and Don Sutton sacrificed. Davey Lopes singled, sending Yeager to third, and took second himself on the throw. The Reds then passed Bill Buckner intentionally before Wynn came up and hit his 31st homer of the season to tie the Los Angeles club record set by Frank Howard in 1962. Steve Garvey followed Wynn to the plate and also hit for the circuit.

Expos 5, Pirates 4 at Montreal (day game):
Pinch-hitting with two men on base, Jose Morales came through with his first major league homer to climax a seventh-inning rally that brought the Expos a 5-4 victory over the Pirates. Singles by Rennie Stennett, Al Oliver, Richie Zisk and Ed Kirkpatrick gave the Pirates two runs in the first before the Expos picked up a counter in the fourth on a double by Bob Bailey and single by Barry Foote. Richie Hebner homered in the fifth and the Pirates made it 4-1 in the sixth with a run on singles by Frank Taveras and Ken Brett around an error by Ron Woods. The Expos opened their rally in the seventh with a run on a single by Mike Jorgensen and a double by Larry Parrish. Then, after Hal Breeden hit a pinch-single and gave way on the paths to Tony Scott, Morales batted for Larry Lintz and crashed his game-winning homer.

Cubs 5, Mets 4 at New York (day game):
The Cubs jumped on Tug McGraw for two runs in the ninth inning and defeated the Mets, 5-4. The Cubs built up a 3-0 lead against Hank Webb before the Mets tied the score with three runs in the sixth on passes to Ted Martinez and Duffy Dyer, a single by Dave Schneck, sacrifice by Don Hahn and single by Ken Boswell. McGraw, following Bob Apodaca in relief, walked Jim Tyrone to open the ninth. Andre Thornton bunted and when Dyer threw wildly, Tyrone reached third but Thornton was caught in a rundown between first and second and was retired. After a walk to Ron Dunn, Steve Swisher hit a sacrifice fly for the tie-breaking run and Dave LaRoche followed with a single to drive in what proved to be the winning run. In the Mets' half, LaRoche was lifted after walking Dyer. An infield out by Benny Ayala and single by Hahn produced a run before Oscar Zamora retired the side.

Cardinals 3, Phillies 1 at Philadelphia (day game):
In a tremendous relief performance, Al Hrabosky struck out three straight batters with the potential tying runs on base in the ninth inning to enable the Cardinals to defeat the Phillies, 3-1, and extend their East Division lead to 1½ games over the Pirates. The Cardinals tagged Steve Carlton for two runs in the fourth on walks to Ted Simmons and Joe Torre, a single by Ken Reitz and double by Bob Forsch. The third run counted in the ninth on a triple by Simmons and single by Torre. In the Phillies' half, Dave Cash and Larry Bowa singled to chase Forsch. Mike Garman relieved and yielded a run-scoring single by Mike Schmidt. Hrabosky then took over and whiffed Willie Montanez, Greg Luzinski and Tony Taylor.

Braves 3, Padres 1 at San Diego (day game):
Helping himself to victory, Phil Niekro drove in the tie-breaking run with a single when the Braves scored twice in the seventh inning to defeat the Padres, 3-1. Nate Colbert homered for the Padres' run in the third. The Braves tied the score against Joe McIntosh in the sixth when Rowland Office singled and Dusty Baker doubled. Vic Correll doubled in the seventh and Jack Pierce walked. Niekro followed with his single to drive in Correll. Craig Robinson, running for Pierce, took third on the hit and counted an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Office.

[DH] Astros 6, Giants 0 (day game) / Giants 8, Astros 4 at San Francisco (day game):
Paul Siebert, lefthander from Columbus (Southern), pitched the Astros to a 6-0 victory in the first game of a doubleheader, but the Giants came back to win the second game, 8-4. Siebert, son of former major league first baseman Dick Siebert, who now is baseball coach at Minnesota U., yielded only four hits in gaining his first major league victory. The Astros handed Mike Caldwell his first loss in Candlestick Park this season after the lefthander had won eight straight decisions at home. Caldwell gave up four runs in the first seven innings, including a homer by Wilbur Howard. The Astros then tagged Randy Moffitt for homers by Cesar Cedeno and Doug Rader in the eighth. In the nightcap, Bruce Miller batted in three runs, Gary Matthews accounted for two and Bobby Bonds hit a homer to escort John D'Acquisto to victory.
