Today's scores and summaries:
Tigers 5, Red Sox 3 at Boston (night game):
Al Kaline singled for the 2,993rd hit of his career to open the rally that brought the Tigers a 5-3 victory over the Red Sox. Bernie Carbo hit a two-run homer for the Red Sox in the first inning, but the Tigers came back with two in the second on a homer by Bill Freehan, double by Reggie Sanders and single by Aurelio Rodriguez. The Red Sox regained the lead in the fourth when Dick McAuliffe singled and Bob Montgomery doubled. Kaline singled in the sixth and stopped at second on a single by Freehan. After a sacrifice by Sanders, Leon Roberts singled to drive in both runners. The Tigers added a tally in the ninth on singles by Marvin Lane, Rodriguez and Ron LeFlore.
Twins 8, White Sox 0 at Chicago (night game):
Posting his first shutout of the season, Vic Albury breezed to an 8-0 victory over the White Sox after the Twins scored six runs in the first inning. Steve Braun and Rod Carew opened with singles, but two were out when Braun scored on a wild pitch by Stan Bahnsen. After a walk to Bobby Darwin, Eric Soderholm singled to drive in Carew. Pat Bourque walked to load the bases. Bill Sharp dropped a line drive by Danny Thompson, allowing two runs to cross the plate. Another scored when Glenn Borgmann was safe on an error by Bill Melton. Braun, up for a second time, singled to add the sixth run of the stanza.
Royals 2, A's 1 at Kansas City (night game):
Thanks to the speed of Vada Pinson, Steve Busby became the first [sic] 20-game winner in Royals' history by defeating the Athletics, 2-1, Busby allowed only three hits, but the A's picked up an unearned run in the first when Bill North walked, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice and scored on a throwing error by Frank White. The Royals tied the score against Catfish Hunter in the fourth with a double by George Brett, a sacrifice and single by John Mayberry. Pinson doubled with one away in the seventh. After Al Cowens lined out, Brett lashed a grounder which Bert Campaneris fielded behind second. His throw to first was too late to catch Brett. Pinson did not hesitate at third but the rounded bag and raced home to score, beating the throw from first baseman Gene Tenace.
Brewers 3, Indians 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
The Brewers, who got four-hit pitching from Jim Colborn and Tom Murphy, rallied for two runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Indians, 3-2. The Brewers scored an unearned run off Jim Perry in first on an error by Frank Robinson, an infield out and single by Dave May. The Indians posted their pair in the fifth. Oscar Gamble homered and Buddy Bell was safe on an error by Tim Johnson. When Dave Duncan singled on a run-and-hit play, Bell raced home from first base. Darrell Porter sparked a Brewers' rally with a score-tying homer in the seventh. Mike Hegan doubled and gave way on the paths to Bobby Mitchell. After an intentional pass to May, pinch-hitter Bob Hansen singled to drive in the winning run.
Orioles 4, Yankees 0 at New York (night game):
The Orioles pulled within 1½ games of the Yankees in the East Division by posting a 4-0 victory behind the pitching of Jim Palmer. The Orioles snapped the scoreless duel between Palmer and Doc Medich with a run in the seventh inning on a double by Elrod Hendricks, safe bunt by Mark Belanger and sacrifice fly by Al Bumbry. Medich was lifted in the eighth after yielding a single to Rich Coggins and hitting Tommy Davis with a pitch. Reliever Sparky Lyle struck out Bob Oliver, but Paul Blair hit the next pitch for a three-run homer to clinch the Oriole victory.
Astros 7, Dodgers 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Astros, after losing seven previous games in Dodger Stadium this season, got five-hit pitching from Tom Griffin and shut out the West Division leaders, 7-0. The Astros rapped Doug Rau for three runs in the fourth inning on singles by Cesar Cedeno and Bob Watson, a sacrifice fly by Lee May, walk to Doug Rader, single by Milt May and grounder by Tomy Helms. Three more runs followed in the fifth. Roger Metzger doubled and Watson knocked out Rau with a run-scoring single. Lee May greeted reliever Charlie Hough with a homer. Rader completed the Astros' scoring with a circuit clout off Rick Rhoden in the eighth inning.
Cubs 4, Phillies 2 at Philadelphia (night game):
Don Kessinger batted in two runs and scored twice to figure in all of the Cubs' scoring in a 4-2 victory over the Phillies. Kessinger drew a pass in the first inning and crossed the plate on a double by Pete LaCock. Then in the fifth, after Tom Dettore and Rick Monday walked, Kessinger drove them home with a double before scoring himself on a single by Jose Cardenal.
Cardinals 2, Pirates 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Base thievery by Lou Brock and another extraordinary relief performance by Al Hrabosky enabled the Cardinals to gain a 2-1 victory in 13 innings to move 2½ games ahead of the Pirates in the East Division. Bob Gibson, who started for the Cardinals, yielded a run on a homer by Al Oliver in the first inning. The Cardinals caught up against Jerry Reuss in the seventh on a single by Ted Simmons, a balk and double by Joe Torre. Brock, who had stolen his 108th base of the season in 10th, led off the 13th with a single off Reuss and promptly stole No. 109. Ted Sizemore sacrificed and Simmons followed with a line drive to Willie Stargell in left field for a sacrifice fly, Brock scoring easily. Hrabosky pitched the last four innings in relief of Gibson and held the Pirates hitless. However, the Mad Hungarian had his work cut out for him in the Pirates' half of the 13th. Bob Robertson struck out, but Gene Clines walked. Art Howe fanned, but the Pirates' hopes were revived when Torre dropped a pop fly by Rennie Stennett. Hrabosky then whiffed Richie Hebner to end the game with his seventh victory against one defeat.
Padres 6, Reds 1 at San Diego (night game):
The Reds had a chance to cut into the Dodgers' lead in the West Division race, but Cincy ran into a tough customer in Bill Greif and lost to the Padres, 6-1. Greif yielded only six hits. The Padres, who wrecked Jack Billingham's bid for his 20th victory, scored a run in the first inning on a single by Glenn Beckert and double by Willie McCovey. Singles by Derrel Thomas and Fred Kendall and an infield out by Enzo Hernandez added a run in the second. The Padres kayoed Billingham in the third after a single by Beckert, double by Johnny Grubb and intentional pass to McCovey loaded the bases. Dave Winfield singled, driving in two runs. After a hit by Thomas filled the sacks again, McCovey scored as Kendall grounded into a double play. Winfield accounted for the Padres' last run with a homer off Tom Hall in the fifth inning.
Braves 4, Giants 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Making up for two errors, Marty Perez knocked in a run with a single in the seventh inning to give the Braves a 4-3 victory over the Giants. The Braves scored a run on a single by Ivan Murrell in the first inning before the Giants came back with their tallies in the second on singles by Steve Ontiveros, Mike Phillips and Ron Bryant, a sacrifice fly by Gary Thomasson and Perez' two errors. The Braves tied the score in the sixth when Murrell singled after a pass to Perez and hits by Davey Johnson and Dusty Baker had loaded the bases. Craig Robinson singled in the seventh and Darrell Evans walked before Perez came through.
