Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 2, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
Homers by Don Baylor and Boog Powell carried the Orioles to a 2-1 victory over the Red Sox. After Baylor's blow in the second inning, the Red Sox scored in the fourth on singles by Carl Yastrzemski and Dwight Evans, a bunt by Bob Montgomery and sacrifice fly by Fred Lynn. Powell then decided the game with his circuit clout in the seventh.

White Sox 2, A's 0 at Chicago (night game):
Bart Johnson and Terry Forster combined on a three-hitter and pitched the White Sox to a 2-0 victory over the Athletics. The White Sox counted their runs off Glenn Abbott in the sixth inning. Pat Kelly walked to open the stanza and went to second on a wild pickoff throw. Bucky Dent beat out a bunt. Jorge Orta singled, scoring Kelly and moving Dent to third. Dent then scored as Carlos May grounded into a double play. Johnson yielded a single by Joe Rudi for the A's third hit of the game in the eighth and was removed in favor of Forster with two out. Forster was wild, walking four in the last 1 1/3 innings, but struck out three and succeeded in registering his 23rd save of the season.

Tigers 8, Brewers 5 at Milwaukee (night game):
Dan Meyer smashed the first two homers of his major league career and Tom Veryzer drove in four runs with three hits, including a homer, to lead the Tigers to an 8-5 victory over the Brewers. Meyer connected for solo swats in the third and seventh innings, while Veryzer rapped his round-tripper with a man on base in the second and singled home runs in the seventh and ninth. John Knox accounted for the Tigers' other markers with a single in the seventh. Don Money homered for the Brewers in the first and three of their other runs came on a circuit clout by Sixto Lezcano, who hit his first major league homer in the sixth.

Twins 3, Angels 2 at Minnesota (night game):
Although Nolan Ryan allowed only three hits, the Angels' fireballer was the victim of an error in the seventh inning and lost to the Twins, 3-2. Ryan struck out six, but hurt himself by walking seven. The Angels were leading, 2-1, when the Twins loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning. Bobby Darwin grounded to shortstop Bobby Valentine, who threw to second in an attempt to start a double play, but John Doherty dropped the relay to first and two runs, one unearned, scored.

[DH] Yankees 5, Indians 4 (night game) / Yankees 3, Indians 0 at New York (night game):
The Yankees moved into a first-place tie with the Orioles in the East Division by sweeping a twi-night doubleheader with the Indians, 5-4 and 3-0. The Yankees beat Gaylord Perry in the lidlifter, breaking a 4-4 tie with a run after two were out in the ninth inning. Elliott Maddox singled and scored when Bobby Murcer tripled for his third RBI of the game. Larry Gura pitched a shutout in the nightcap and gained his fifth straight victory without a defeat since coming up from Syracuse (International). The Yankees counted twice in the fourth inning on a double by Maddox, a hit batsman, single by Lou Piniella and double by Chris Chambliss. Maddox doubled again in the sixth, advanced on an infield out and scored when Piniella hit the Yankees' 67th sacrifice fly of the season for a new major league record. The former mark of 66 was set by the New York Giants in 1912 and was tied by the Cardinals in 1954.

Braves 1, Astros 0 at Houston (night game):
Phil Niekro not only pitched a four-hitter and recorded his fifth shutout of the season, but the Braves' righthander also drove in the only run of the game with a sacrifice fly to beat the Astros, 1-0. J.R. Richard, pitching for the Astros, allowed only two hits in eight innings. However, with one out in the fifth, Richard hit Vic Correll with a pitch. Craig Robinson doubled, Correll stopping at third. Niekro followed with a line drive to left field, Correll scoring after the catch.

Dodgers 2, Padres 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Getting a lift from batterymate Steve Yeager, who hit a homer in the fifth inning, Andy Messersmith pitched the Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Padres. In losing to the Dodgers for the 13th straight time this season, the Padres were able to score only in the fourth on a single by Glenn Beckert, walk to Johnny Grubb, a passed ball and infield out by Dave Winfield. Jim Wynn singled and Steve Garvey doubled for the tying run in the Dodgers' half of the fourth before Yeager hit his game-deciding homer off Joe McIntosh in the fifth.

Phillies 10, Expos 2 at Montreal (night game):
The Phillies built up a 6-0 lead and then clinched their 10-2 victory over the Expos with two-run homers by Del Unser and Willie Montanez. Steve Carlton held the Expos to four hits while collecting three himself and scoring twice. The Phillies picked up two runs, one of them unearned, in the third before piling up four runs in the fourth. John Montague, who relieved Steve Renko, gave up three straight hits without retiring anyone. Don DeMola took over and ended the inning, but then was the victim of Phillies' homers. Jay Johnstone singled ahead of the drive by Unser in the fifth and Dave Cash was on base with a single when Montanez hit for the circuit in the sixth.

Pirates 4, Mets 3 at Pittsburgh (night game):
On the verge of what could have been a damaging defeat, the Pirates rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to beat the Mets, 4-3. The Mets counted twice in the first when Don Hahn was safe on an error by Richie Hebner, Felix Millan doubled and Cleon Jones singled. Consecutive singles by Millan, Rusty Staub and Jones made it 3-0 in the seventh. The Pirates came back with a run in their half on a single by Art Howe, forceout by Gene Clines and double by Ken Macha. In the ninth, Howe walked, leading to the exit of Ray Sadecki. Tug McGraw, relieving, uncorked a wild pitch before striking out Dave Parker. Paul Popovich, pinch-hitting for Ramon Hernandez, singled, Howe stopping at third. Rennie Stennett singled, scoring Howe, sending Popovich to third and knocking out McGraw. After Harry Parker took over, Stennett took second on a passed ball. Manny Sanguillen grounded to Ted Martinez, who threw to third, but Stennett was safe on the fielder's choice as Popovich scored. The Mets then walked Al Oliver intentionally to load the bases. Willie Stargell followed with a grounder to John Milner, who made an error in judgment, stepping on first before throwing home. As a result of that brief delay, the throw home was too late to catch Stennett, who scored the winning run.

Giants 4, Reds 3 at San Francisco (night game):
With only 10 games left on the Cincinnati schedule, the Reds fell 3½ lengths behind the Dodgers in the West Division after losing to the Giants, 4-3. The Reds collected only four hits off Mike Caldwell, but scored one run on a homer by Johnny Bench in the fourth inning and twice more on two walks and a double by Tony Perez in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. The Giants tied the score against Clay Kirby in the seventh when Ed Goodson singled, Steve Ontiveros doubled, Chris Speier grounded out and Dave Rader hit a sacrifice fly. Then in the eighth, Tito Fuentes beat out an infield hit, stole second and scored the winning run on a single by Gary Thomasson.

Cardinals 5, Cubs 2 at St. Louis (night game):
A homer by Ted Simmons with two men on base powered the Cardinals to a 5-2 victory over the Cubs. Rick Monday homered for the Cubs in the first inning, but the Cards matched that with a run in the third on doubles by Simmons and Bake McBride. Then in the fourth, Mike Tyson walked, Bob Forsch bunted safely and Lou Brock singled to load the bases. Reggie Smith singled, scoring Tyson, but Forsch was thrown out at the plate. However, Simmons followed with his homer for the decisive margin. The Cubs added a run in the seventh on singles by Bill Madlock, Andre Thornton and Ron Dunn before Mike Garman came in to save the game.
