Today's scores and summaries:
[DH] Brewers 6, Indians 2 (night game) / Indians 7, Brewers 4 at Cleveland (night game):
In the battle for fourth place in the A. L. East, the Indians stayed a half-game ahead of the Brewers, gaining a 7-4 nightcap victory after Milwaukee had won the opener with a four-run, ninth-inning rally, 6-2. Pinch-hitter Bob Hansen pulled the Brewers into a 2-2 tie in the eighth inning of the first game with a solo homer, and consecutive two-out doubles in the ninth by Tim Johnson, Jack Lind and Don Money, with Johnson's driving home a pair of runs, wrapped up the verdict for Jim Colborn. Money tallied the Brewers' first run in the sixth when he scored from third on the front end of a double steal. Two-run homers by Charlie Spikes in the first inning and Leron Lee in the sixth and a solo shot by Dave Duncan in the eighth helped the Tribe gain their split with a second-game victory. The verdict went to reliever Fred Beene, who held the Brewers to one hit over five frames after taking over from starter Jim Kern in the second inning, when Milwaukee scored three times, aided by two Cleveland errors.
Dodgers 4, Braves 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Don Sutton notched his eighth straight victory with relief help from Mike Marshall as the Dodgers nipped the Braves, 4-3, and increased their lead over the Reds in the N. L. West to five games with only eight to play. Sutton took a two-hit shutout into the eighth when Atlanta chased him with a four-hit rally, including a two-run homer by Rowland Office. Sutton singled home the first run of game in the fourth and doubled in another during the Dodgers' two-run sixth. Jim Wynn's RBI single scored Bill Buckner in the fifth.
Pirates 1, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Richie Hebner singled home pinch-runner Miguel Dilone in the top of the 10th to decide a pitching duel between Jim Rooker and Lynn McGlothen and give the Pirates a 1-0 nod over the Cardinals, whose N. L. East lead over the Bucs shrank to one-half game. Dilone, running for pinch-hitter Paul Popovich, who had opened the 10th with a bloop single to left, was sacrificed to second before Hebner delivered his hit.
