Today's scores and summaries:

Indians 2, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
The Indians bunched three of their six hits in the fourth inning and nipped the Red Sox, 2-1, behind Jim Perry. Charlie Spikes opened the fourth with a single, moved to third on John Ellis' double to right, then scored on George Hendrick's infield roller. Ellis came home on Dave Duncan's single to left. Boston scored its lone run in the fourth on singles by Fred Lynn and Dwight Evans and an infield out.

Orioles 12, Tigers 6 at Detroit (night game):
The Orioles, with Earl Williams and Bobby Grich homering and driving in three runs apiece, increased their A. L. East lead over the idle Yankees to a full game with a 12-6 victory over the Tigers. Baltimore tallied five times in the second, Brooks Robinson plating the first two with a single, then scoring ahead of Williams' homer. Dave Lemanczyk, relieving loser Mickey Lolich, walked two batters and gave up an RBI single to Grich. Williams singled home a run in the third, and Paul Blair, Grich and Tommy Davis delivered RBI hits in a three-run fourth. Grich hit a solo homer in the sixth and Mark Belanger drove in the final two Baltimore runs in the ninth with a bases-loaded single. Bill Freehan doubled to knock in the Tigers' first two runs in the third, then singled home another with two out in the fifth to start a three-run rally. A double by Gary Sutherland and single by Ron LeFlore produced Detroit's final run in the eighth.

Astros 4, Dodgers 1 at Houston (night game):
The Astros' Larry Dierker and Ken Forsch, combining on a six-hitter, held the Dodgers scoreless until the ninth and prevented Los Angeles from clinching the N. L. West crown as Houston won, 4-1. Dierker drove home the Astros' first run in the fourth, singling across Doug Rader, who had doubled. Houston made it 3-0 in the fifth on Lee May's RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Milt May. A passed ball by Joe Ferguson in the sixth allowed Dave Campbell, the pinch-runner for pinch-hitter Johnny Edwards, who had doubled, to score after Campbell had moved to third on a groundout. The Dodgers avoided being shutout when they pushed across a run in the final frame on two walks and a single by pinch-hitter Manny Mota. Dierker worked six innings before his arm stiffened and he was relieved by Forsch.

Cardinals 5, Expos 1 at Montreal (night game):
Ted Simmons' three-run homer in the first and Reggie Smith's two-run triple in the eighth backed three-hit hurling by rookie Bob Forsch as the Cardinals remained in a tie with the Pirates in the N.L. East by beating the Expos, 5-1. Simmons rapped his 20th round-tripper after a single by Ted Sizemore and walk to Smith. Forsch held Montreal hitless through six innings, the Expos finally breaking through for their only tally in the seventh on a double by Mike Jorgensen and single by Ken Singleton. Forsch opened the eighth with a single and Lou Brock reached on an error before Smith swatted his triple. The Expos' only other hit was a two-out single by Willie Davis in the ninth.

Mets 5, Phillies 2 at New York (night game):
The Mets snapped a 1-1 tie with a four-run rally in the sixth to hand the Phillies a 5-2 defeat. Wayne Garrett delivered the biggest blow, a three-run homer after Ted Martinez singled, stole second and moved to third on a fly ball. Rusty Staub had walked and Benny Ayala singled across the go-ahead run to knock out Philadelphia starter Larry Christenson. Mac Scarce relieved and was greeted by Garrett's 13th homer of the year. Both clubs tallied single runs in the fourth, and the Phillies tacked on their final counter in the ninth against Jerry Koosman, who went the distance for his 15th victory.

Pirates 2, Cubs 1 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Pinch-hitter Richie Zisk tripled home Manny Sanguillen, who had bunted for a single and moved to second on a wild pitch in the seventh inning, to give the Pirates a 2-1 victory over the Cubs. The RBI was Zisk's 100th of the season and broke a tie which had stood since the third inning when the Pirates scored a run off Bill Bonham. The Cubs scored their only run off Bruce Kison in the first when the Pirate winner gave up two singles, hit a batter and walked Pete LaCock on four pitches. Kison gave up only one hit after the first frame. The Pirates got the tying tally two innings later when Frank Taveras was hit by a pitch, then broke for second as Rennie Stennett bounced to third. Stennett was thrown out at first, but Taveras continued to third and came around to score when the return throw from LaCock to third baseman Bill Madlock was wild. The run became earned when Richie Hebner walked and Al Oliver singled.
