Today's scores and summaries:

A's 3, Royals 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Claudell Washington singled home what proved to be the winning run in the top of the ninth as the Athletics hung on to nip the Royals, 3-2. The A's took a 1-0 lead in the second when Gene Tenace walked and came all the way around on Ted Kubiak's double into the left-field corner. The Royals tied the score in the home half of the frame when Hal McRae walked and swiped second. He scored when Sal Bando threw away Harmon Killebrew's chopper down the third base line. Oakland went ahead, 2-1, in the sixth when Kubiak singled after a double by Joe Rudi and walks to Billy Williams and Gene Tenace loaded the bases. Winner Ken Holtzman needed final-out help from Rollie Fingers after the Royals scored one run in the ninth.

Dodgers 5, Reds 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Losers of three one-run decisions in Cincinnati a week earlier, the Dodgers won their home opener from the Reds, 5-2, with home-run help from Ron Cey and Jim Wynn. Back-to-back run-scoring doubles by Davey Lopes and Bill Buckner with two out gave L.A. a 2-0 advantage in the third. Cey opened the fifth with a homer and Wynn connected in the sixth for a 4-0 lead. After the Reds tallied twice in the seventh on doubles by Johnny Bench and Tony Perez, plus a single by Dave Concepcion, Wynn doubled home Rick Auerbach from second for the final Dodger tally in the bottom of the inning. Reliever Mike Marshall preserved starter Doug Rau's first victory, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the eighth by striking out Bench and getting Perez to ground out.

Phillies 4, Mets 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Shut out through seven innings, the Phillies used home runs by Greg Luzinski and Mike Schmidt to overcome the Mets, 4-3. Philadelphia tied the score with two out in the eighth when Larry Bowa walked and scored on a double by Willie Montanez. Luzinski followed with his fourth homer of the campaign. Schmidt hit his first of the year to lead off the bottom of the ninth, making a winner of reliever Gene Garber. The Mets took a 2-0 lead over starter Jim Lonborg in the fifth on a walk, forceout, Del Unser's single and Felix Millan's double. The New Yorkers made it 3-0 in the sixth on a walk, groundout and single by Jerry Grote.

Cubs 4, Pirates 2 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Using a three-run fourth inning, the Cubs handed the Pirates their first setback of the season, 4-2, with three Chicago hurlers stopping Pittsburgh on six hits. Jerry Morales hit the Bruins' first homer of the season in the second inning, then singled to get a three-run fourth started. He stole second and scored on Manny Trillo's single. Steve Swisher, who followed with a run-scoring double, came home himself on winning pitcher Rick Reuschel's infield hit and a forceout. Pirate runs in the fifth came on a single by Dave Parker, Manny Sanguillen's triple and a sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Ed Kirkpatrick.

Padres 3, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
The second smallest crowd in Candlestick Park history -- only 987 -- saw the Padres prevail over the Giants, 3-1. Winner Sonny Siebert didn't allow a hit through five innings, but left after three singles loaded the bases with one out in the sixth. Reliever Dave Tomlin induced Bobby Murcer to hit into an inning-ending double play. San Francisco did not score until Gary Matthews hit a leadoff homer in the ninth. Bobby Tolan doubled home Enzo Hernandez, who had walked, with the first San Diego run in the opening inning. Johnny Grubb doubled and was singled home by Dave Winfield in the sixth. Hernandez' single, a sacrifice and another single by Hector Torres produced the Padres' final run in the eighth.
