Today's scores and summaries:

Brewers 7, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (night game):
After breaking a tie when Pedro Garcia doubled and Robin Yount singled in the eighth inning, the Brewers went on to score five more runs, all unearned on three errors, to defeat the Orioles, 7-1. Bill Champion limited the Orioles to five hits. The Brewers had only three hits in their big inning. Following Garcia's double and Yount's single, successive errors by Don Baylor and Lee May, a walk, infield out, another error by Mark Belanger and single by Darrell Porter climaxed the Brewers' scoring.

Rangers 6, White Sox 5 at Chicago (day game):
Dave Nelson singled in the 13th inning, stole second and scored on a single by Joe Lovitto to bring the Rangers a 6-5 victory over the White Sox. Toby Harrah hit a two-run homer for the Rangers, who were leading, 4-1, before the White Sox rallied for four runs in the seventh on five singles together with a walk. The Rangers came back to tie the score in the eighth on a double by Jim Spencer, single by Harrah and infield out by Mike Hargrove.

Royals 4, A's 3 at Kansas City (night game):
A pinch-homer by Al Cowens provided a spark for the Royals, who came from behind to defeat the Athletics, 4-3. The A's had a circuit clout by Joe Rudi in the fourth inning when they scored all their runs to take a 3-1 lead. Mike Norris, pitching for the A's, allowed only one hit before the rookie was lifted in the eighth after Vada Pinson was safe on an error. Paul Lindblad relieved and was greeted by Cowens' score-tying homer. Rollie Fingers then was the loser in the ninth when Hal McRae singled and raced home from first on a double by George Brett.

Angels 7, Twins 3 at Minnesota (day game):
Backed by four double plays, Nolan Ryan gained his third straight victory as the Angels defeated the Twins, 7-3. Ryan struck out only seven and walked nine before yielding the mound to Mickey Scott in the ninth inning. Joe Lahoud hit a double and homer to lead the Angels to a 2-0 lead before the Twins got their runs on a double by Glenn Borgmann in the sixth after Ryan hit Tony Oliva with a pitch and walked Eric Soderholm and Danny Thompson to load the bases. The Angels came back immediately with two runs in the seventh. Orlando Ramirez singled and, after an infield out by Morris Nettles, scored from second on a single by Mickey Rivers, who also raced home when Bobby Darwin let the ball get past him in right field. Bruce Bochte batted in two runs with a double in the ninth, stole third and scored on a throwing error by Borgmann.

Red Sox 5, Yankees 3 at New York (day game):
Catfish Hunter was a loser for the second time in as many starts when the Red Sox defeated the Yankees, 5-3. Triples by Elliott Maddox and Thurman Munson helped the Yankees take a 3-0 lead before the Red Sox rallied to go ahead with four runs in the fourth. A walk to Rico Petrocelli and singles by Bernie Carbo and Bob Montgomery netted the first tally. Following a one-out single by Doug Griffin that loaded the bases, Fred Lynn hit a sacrifice fly. After a stolen base, Dwight Evans singled two runs across.

Braves 6, Astros 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Playing their first home game of the season, the Braves entertained the crowd of 12,774 by defeating the Astros, 6-1. Jose Cruz homered in the first inning for the only run off Phil Niekro. The Braves came back in their half to take the lead when Ralph Garr walked and Darrell Evans hit for the circuit. Evans was nicked by a pitch with the bases loaded in the third to pick up credit for his third RBI of the game. Dusty Baker drove in the Braves' three other runs with a single and sacrifice fly.

Dodgers 3, Reds 1 at Los Angeles (night game):
Turning in the fourth one-hitter of his major league career, Don Sutton pitched the Dodgers to a 3-1 victory over the Reds. Johnny Bench homered in the seventh inning for the only hit off the righthander. The Dodgers jumped on Clay Kirby for two runs in the first on a triple by Davey Lopes and homer by Jim Wynn. After Bench broke up Sutton's bid for a no-hitter, the Dodgers posted another run in their half of the seventh when Joe Ferguson was hit by a pitch, Ron Cey doubled and Sutton laid down a squeeze bunt.

Padres 2, Giants 1 at San Francisco (night game):
Run-scoring singles by Bobby Tolan and Willie McCovey in the eighth inning brought the Padres a 2-1 victory over the Giants. Randy Jones, who started for the Padres, was the victim of an unearned run in the first. Glenn Beckert batted for Jones in the eighth and was safe on an error. After Enzo Hernandez walked, Tolan singled to tie the score. Johnny Grubb was hit by a pitch to load the bases and McCovey followed with his single to plate the winning run.
