Orioles 2, Brewers 0 at Baltimore (night game):
Allowing only three hits, Mike Cuellar pitched the Orioles to a 2-0 victory over the Brewers. The Orioles decided Cuellar's duel with Jim Slaton by scoring a run on a walk to Ken Singleton, sacrifice by Paul Blair and single by Don Baylor in the sixth inning. Elrod Hendricks provided more elbow room with a homer in the seventh.
Rangers 14, White Sox 4 at Chicago (day game):
Stepping in after Jim Bibby was kayoed in the first inning, Jim Umbarger pitched shutout ball and gained his first major league victory when the Rangers trounced the White Sox, 14-4. The Rangers started the game with three runs off Wilbur Wood in the first, but Bibby retired only one batter in the White Sox half, giving up four runs on two walks, a single by Bill Melton, an error and triple by Carlos May. Umbarger, a lefthander from Arizona State who pitched for Pittsfield (Eastern) last season, took over and handcuffed the White Sox on five hits over the next 7 2/3 innings before yielding the mound to Jim Merritt in the ninth. The Rangers exploded for five runs in the third, two scoring on a homer by Jeff Burroughs, and breezed the rest of the way behind an 18-hit attack that also included a circuit clout by Willie Davis.
Royals 6, A's 2 at Kansas City (night game):
Harmon Killebrew hit his first homer in a Kansas City uniform and 560th of his career to start the Royals' scoring in a 6-2 victory over the Athletics. After Killebrew's blast tied the score at 1-1 in the second inning, the Royals went ahead in the third when Amos Otis singled, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by John Mayberry. The Royals then put the game away with three runs in the fourth on a walk to Killebrew. singles by George Brett and Cookie Rojas, sacrifice fly by Jim Wohlford, squeeze bunt by Buck Martinez and single by Frank White. Nelson Briles limited the A's to five hits with their runs coming on a homer by Sal Bando in the first inning and another by Claudell Washington, his first in the major leagues, in the eighth.
Twins 10, Angels 4 at Minnesota (day game):
Bobby Darwin, Craig Kusick and Larry Hisle each hit two-run doubles as the Twins ended their five-game losing streak with a 10-4 victory over the Angels. Darwin doubled in the first inning to help the Twins get off to a four-run lead. Kusick added a pair with his two-bagger in the third. Hisle's double came in the sixth when the Twins capped their scoring. Darwin hit a sacrifice fly during that stanza for his third RBI of the game. Morris Nettles collected three of the Angels' 10 hits off Bert Blyleven and batted in two runs.
Red Sox 4, Yankees 2 at New York (day game):
Two homers by Fred Lynn and one by Carl Yastrzemski powered the Red Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Yankees behind the pitching of Rick Wise, who turned in his first complete game since April 13, 1974 and gained his first triumph since June 23. Lynn was on base with a single when Yastrzemski hit for the circuit in the first inning. Lynn then homered in the third and again in the fifth. Wise gave up a run on three singles in the second, stopped the Yankees with the bases loaded in the seventh and yielded a homer by Walt Williams in the the ninth.
Braves 5, Astros 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Buzz Capra, who allowed six hits and had a shutout in his grasp until the ninth inning, pitched the Braves to a 5-2 victory over the Astros. Bob Watson homered following an error to account for the Astros' runs. The Braves started their scoring with a circuit clout by Dusty Baker in the second and added their other runs in the fourth. Larvell Blanks batted in two with a bases-loaded single and two came home on a wild throw by Roger Metzger.
Dodgers 7, Reds 6 at Los Angeles (night game):
Jim Wynn hit a grand-slam homer to tie the score in the seventh inning and Steve Garvey singled with the bases loaded in the ninth to give the Dodgers a 7-6 victory over the Reds. The Reds scored four runs in the third, two coming on a round-tripper by Tony Perez, in a kayo of Juan Marichal. The Dodgers had a two-run homer by Ron Cey in the fourth but were losing, 6-2, before a single by Rick Auerbach and passes to Davey Lopes and Bill Buckner filled the sacks in the seventh and set the stage for Wynn's wallop off Pat Darcy, who had taken the mound in relief of Fred Norman. In the ninth, Auerbach singled. Mike Marshall, the winner in relief, struck out, but Lopes singled and both runners advanced an extra base on an error by Ken Griffey. After an intentional pass to Buckner, Wynn struck out, but Garvey ended game with his winning single.
Cubs 9, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (night game):
Manny Trillo hit his first major league homer, connecting with two men on base, as the Cubs exploded for five runs against Steve Carlton in the first inning en route to a 9-3 victory over the Phillies. Don Kessinger opened the game with a triple and, after Jose Cardenal grounded out, the Cubs put together four straight singles by Bill Madlock, Jerry Morales, George Mitterwald and Rick Monday before Trillo capped the inning with his circuit clout.
Expos 5, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
Woodie Fryman gained his first victory since returning to the N. L. and the Expos ended a five-game losing streak by defeating the Pirates, 5-0. Fryman allowed only five hits, all singles. The Expos began their attack on Dock Ellis with run-scoring singles by Pepe Mangual and Tony Scott in the first inning. Larry Parrish hit his first major league homer in the second. A single by Scott and double by Barry Foote added a run in the third before Ellis departed in the fourth.
Giants 7, Padres 1 at San Francisco (day game):
A triple by Bobby Murcer supplied the big blow when the Giants scored five runs in the fifth inning to nail down a 7-1 victory over the Padres. A double by Steve Ontiveros, single by Dave Rader, pass to John D'Acquisto and sacrifice fly by Von Joshua produced the first marker before Murcer knocked in two with his triple. Another pair scored later on a wild pitch by Rich Folkers, in relief of Dan Spillner, and an error by Randy Hundley on his throw back to the infield. Mike Ivie homered in the seventh for the Padres' run.
Cardinals 3, Mets 2 at St. Louis (night game):
The Cardinals bunched three of their five hits with two errors for three runs in the fifth inning to defeat the Mets, 3-2. Ken Reitz led off with a single. Keith Hernandez was safe on a throwing error by Felix Millan and Ed Brinkman followed with a single to drive in the first run. Hernandez, picked off second, raced for third and was struck on the shoulder by a throw from Bud Harrelson. As the ball bounced away, Hernandez scored. Brinkman took second on the error, advanced to third on a wild pitch and tallied what proved to be the winning run on a single by Lou Brock.
