Today's scores and summaries:

Yankees 5, Red Sox 0 at Boston (day game):
Doc Medich pitched a three-hit shutout and Bobby Bonds batted in two runs as the Yankees defeated the Red Sox, 5-0. Bonds, who had three hits in four trips, singled to plate the Yankees' initial run in the sixth inning and accounted for his other RBI with a homer in the eighth.

Twins 7, Angels 1 at California (day game):
Possessor of an 8-9 record with the Twins last year, Vic Albury made it two straight victories this season, pitching a six-hitter to defeat the Angels, 7-1. The Angels' run was unearned. The Twins were held hitless by Chuck Dobson until the fourth inning when they bunched singles by Sergio Ferrer and Steve Brye, an error on a grounder by Bobby Darwin and singles by Larry Hisle and Craig Kusick for four runs. Darwin, who was credited with an RBI on his grounder, made it three for the game by smashing a homer after Ferrer was hit by a pitch in the eighth.

White Sox 7, Royals 3 at Chicago (day game):
Jim Kaat gained his second victory of the year and ninth straight over two seasons but needed help from Terry Forster before the White Sox defeated the Royals, 7-3. The Royals were stopped on a five-game winning streak, while the White Sox clipped their string of five losses. The White Sox jumped on Bruce Dal Canton for five runs in the first two innings and added their other tallies when Brian Downing homered in the third after Bucky Dent was safe on an error. The Royals forced the exit of Kaat in the seventh when they scored on a single by Harmon Killebrew, a forceout, single by Cookie Rojas, double by Jim Wohlford and single by Amos Otis.

Tigers 6, Indians 2 at Detroit (day game):
The inability of George Hendrick to hang on to a bloop fly ball in short center field led to five runs in the fifth inning and enabled the Tigers to defeat the Indians, 6-2. The Indians counted their runs in the first on a triple by Tommy McCraw, infield out by Hendrick and homer by John Ellis. In the fifth, Dan Meyer and Art James singled for the Tigers. Then, with two out, Hendrick ran a long way for a fly by Ron LeFlore, but dropped the ball as two runs scored. LeFlore was given credit for a double. Gary Sutherland followed with a single, driving in LeFlore. Willie Horton put the cap on the inning by hitting a homer to seal the defeat for Gaylord Perry.

Orioles 1, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
A homer by Bobby Grich in the eighth inning enabled the Orioles to edge the Brewers, 1-0, in a duel between Jim Palmer and Pete Broberg.

Rangers 2, A's 1 at Oakland (night game):
Fergie Jenkins had his former Cub teammate Billy Williams to blame for missing a possible no-hitter when the Rangers' righthander defeated the Athletics, 2-1. Jenkins gave up only two hits, both by Williams, who homered in the second inning and singled in the seventh. The Rangers started their scoring with an unearned run off Ken Holtzman in the first on a single by Willie Davis, a hit batsman and error by Bert Campaneris. After Williams tied the game with his homer, the Rangers put over the deciding run in the fourth on a double by Jim Fregosi and triple by Tom Grieve.

Braves 3, Dodgers 2 at Atlanta (night game):
A bases-loaded double by Ralph Garr in the seventh inning drove in two runs and brought the Braves a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers. After each club scored once in the fourth, the Dodgers took a 2-1 lead in the seventh with singles by Lee Lacy, Rick Auerbach and Chuck Manuel. In the Braves' half, Dusty Baker singled, Mike Lum walked and Vic Correll sacrificed. Then with two out, Dave May batted for Carl Morton and drew a pass to load the bases, setting the stage for Garr's double after Jim Brewer took the mound as the Dodgers' third pitcher of the game.

Phillies 7, Cubs 5 at Chicago (day game):
The batting of Dave Cash and Greg Luzinski paced the Phillies to a 7-5 victory over the Cubs. Luzinski collected three singles and drove in a run with each of his hits. Cash also had three singles and scored each time after reaching base.

Reds 5, Giants 4 at Cincinnati (day game):
An unearned run with two out in the ninth inning enabled the Reds to defeat the Giants, 5-4. With one away, Joe Morgan doubled. After an intentional pass to Johnny Bench, Tony Perez struck out. Charlie Williams, on the mound in relief for the Giants, uncorked a wild pitch and catcher Marc Hill then threw wildly to third trying to nail Morgan, who scored the winning run. The Reds counted their first three runs in the fifth on four walks and a single by Dave Concepcion for their only hit off John D'Acquisto, forcing his departure. After the Giants took a 4-3 lead in the seventh, the Reds tied the score in their half with doubles by Merv Rettenmund and Pete Rose.

Padres 2, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Willie McCovey hit his first homer of the season and Tito Fuentes drove in another run with a single as the Padres defeated the Astros, 2-1, behind the four-hit hurling of Dan Spillner. McCovey's homer led off the second inning. Dave Winfield walked as the next batter to face Tom Griffin and scored what proved to be the winning run on singles by Dick Sharon and Fuentes. The Astros reached Spillner for their tally in the third on a double by Roger Metzger, sacrifice bunt by Griffin and sacrifice fly by Rob Andrews.

Expos 4, Pirates 3 at Montreal (day game):
An error and passed ball in the sixth inning allowed the Expos to score a run without the benefit of a hit for a 4-3 victory over the Pirates. Al Oliver homered for the Pirates in the first, but the Expos ganged up on Dock Ellis for three runs in the second on a single by Larry Biittner, double by Larry Parrish and singles by Larry Lintz and Tim Foli. The Pirates tied the score in the sixth when Richie Zisk hit a bases-loaded single. In the home half, Pepe Mangual reached base on a grounder when Willie Stargell dropped the throw to first. Biittner walked and after a sacrifice and intentional pass to Barry Foote, catcher Manny Sanguillen let a pitch by Ellis get away for a passed ball that allowed Mangual to score.

Mets 9, Cardinals 5 at New York (day game):
Although Jerry Koosman had to struggle through the game, throwing 165 pitches, the Mets' lefthander lasted the route and defeated the Cardinals, 9-5. Lynn McGlothen, who started for the Cardinals, was less fortunate. The Mets rapped him for five runs in four innings and picked up their remaining tallies off three relievers. Del Unser had three hits, marking the seventh time in 11 games that the Mets' new outfielder had collected two or more hits. Reggie Smith smashed a two-run homer for the Cardinals.
