The Tigers rallied for three runs in the ninth, two driven home by Gary Sutherland, who singled with the bases loaded and two out, to defeat the Orioles, 5-3. Detroit tied the score when Baltimore loser Mike Cuellar walked Aurelio Rodriguez with the bases loaded. The Orioles scored all their runs in the second inning, the first tally coming on Don Baylor's homer. In the Tiger sixth, Willie Horton homered after Rodriguez doubled and scored on a fly ball and a groundout.
Royals 7, White Sox 5 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals eased ahead of the Athletics into first place in the A.L. West by beating the White Sox, 7-5. Harmon Killebrew snapped a 3-3 tie with a leadoff homer in the sixth. Hal McRae delivered a bases-loaded triple in the following inning for a 7-3 lead. The White Sox rallied with two in the ninth when Brian Downing walked and Jorge Orta homered. Amos Otis tripled home one of two third-inning Royals' runs and doubled home another in the fifth. Singles by Orta, Pat Kelly and Carlos May, plus a run-scoring double play accounted for two White Sox tallies in the sixth to tie the score.
Yankees 6, Indians 1 at New York (night game):
Boosting his career record against the Indians to 11-3, Rudy May tossed a four-hitter, with three-RBI support from Alex Johnson, as the Yankees stopped Cleveland, 6-1. New York combed former teammate Fritz Peterson for four runs in the first on singles by Roy White, Elliott Maddox and Thurman Munson and Johnson's two-run triple, followed by a sacrifice fly by Graig Nettles. Munson singled home the winners' fifth run in the second. Bobby Bonds singled, swiped second, took third on an error and crossed the plate with the final New York run in the seventh on Johnson's sacrifice fly. John Ellis homered off May for the lone Indian tally in the seventh.

Pinch-hitter Manny Mota singled off second baseman Marty Perez' glove to drive home Jim Wynn and Steve Garvey with the tying and winning runs. Lee Lacy and Wynn opened the frame by drawing walks off Braves' reliever Tom House. Garvey doubled off the bag at third to score Lacy, setting the stage for Mota, who was batting for Willie Crawford. Garvey drove in the first Dodger run in the sixth with a two-out single. The Braves built a 3-0 lead, scoring twice inthe second on singles by Earl Williams, Dusty Baker and Mike Lum and a groundout.
