Today's scores and summaries:
Tigers 4, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (night game):
After Willie Horton hit a two-run homer to tie the score in the eighth inning, back-to-back blasts by Aurelio Rodriguez and Ron LeFlore in the 10th powered the Tigers to a 4-2 victory over the Orioles. Paul Blair doubled and Tommy Davis singled for an Orioles' run in the third and Don Baylor made it 2-0 with a circuit clout in the fourth. Gary Sutherland singled ahead of Horton's tying homer in the eighth.
Angels 12, Royals 1 at Kansas City (night game):
The Angels exploded for nine runs on seven hits, two walks and an error in the third inning and breezed to a 12-1 victory over the Royals. Tommy Harper drove in three runs with a double and Jerry Remy accounted for two with a triple during the outburst. The Angels added their three other runs in the seventh on a hit batsman and consecutive doubles by Remy, Orlando Ramirez and Morris Nettles.
Indians 3, Yankees 1 at New York (night game):
Making his first start for the Indians, Don Hood received batting support from Frank Duffy and defeated the Yankees, 3-1. Duffy drove in all three Indians' runs, accounting for the first two with a single after hits by Buddy Bell and Alan Ashby and a walk to Jack Brohamer had loaded the bases in the second inning. A walk to Ashby and singles by Brohamer and Duffy added the other run in the seventh.
Rangers 3, White Sox 2 at Texas (night game):
With the help of a two-run homer by Lenny Randle, Fergie Jenkins gained his third straight victory as the Rangers defeated the White Sox, 3-2. The Rangers picked up their initial run in the first inning on two walks and a single by Jim Fregosi. Randle hit his homer after a single by Cesar Tovar in the third. Jenkins, who had lost his first two decisions of the year, gave up a White Sox run in the fourth on a walk and singles by Ken Henderson and Bill Melton. Jorge Orta tripled and Carlos May singled for another run in the eighth, but Jenkins bore down to prevent further scoring.
Mets 9, Cubs 1 at Chicago (day game):
The Mets scored eight runs in the first two innings and breezed to their seventh straight victory, defeating the Cubs, 9-1. Doubles by Felix Millan and singles by Rusty Staub, Dave Kingman, John Milner and Jerry Grote produced three runs for the Mets in the first. Del Unser walked in the second. After Rick Monday dropped a fly ball by Millan in center field, Joe Torre drove in both runners with a single. Following another single by Staub, Kingman struck out but Milner came up and hit a three-run homer. Tom Seaver doled out seven hits to end the Cubs' four-game winning streak.
Dodgers 8, Braves 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Andy Messersrnith not only pitched a shutout for his fourth straight victory and eighth in a row over two seasons, but drove in the first two runs with a pair of singles as the Dodgers defeated the Braves, 8-0, to extend their winning streak to six games. Willie Crawford and Steve Garvey joined in the Dodgers' attack with homers. Crawford connected following a single by Garvey in the fifth inning. Davey Lopes and Lee Lacy were on base when Garvey hit his homer in the sixth.
Phillies 5, Expos 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Jim Lonborg pitched a three-hitter and Greg Luzinski drove in three runs with a single and homer as the Phillies defeated the Expos, 5-0. A walk to Mike Schmidt, a wild pitch and Luzinski's single started the Phillies' scoring in the first inning. Larry Bowa doubled in the third, stole third and continued home on a wild throw by catcher Barry Foote. Luzinski hit his homer following a single by Schmidt in the fifth. One out later, Jay Johnstone wrapped up the scoring with another round-tripper.
Cardinals 3, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Cardinals ended their six-game losing streak when Lynn McGlothen pitched a five-hitter and defeated the Pirates, 3-0. Manager Red Schoendienst shook up the Cardinals' lineup, putting Luis Melendez in the outfield among other changes, and the move paid off when Melendez hit a homer in the fifth inning. Reggie Smith singled in the sixth, took second on a balk and scored on a single by Ted Simmons. The other run in the eighth came on a double by Bake McBride and single by Ted Sizemore.
Astros 8, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Breaking a tight game apart, the Astros exploded for all their runs in the seventh inning to defeat the Padres, 8-2. The Astros started the stanza by loading the bases on singles by Jose Cruz and Doug Rader and a late throw to third by Dave Freisleben on a bunt by Roger Metzger. J.R. Richard promptly helped himself to victory with a single, driving in two runs. Two errors and singles by Cruz and Metzger, both batting for a second time in the inning, produced the remaining tallies. Willie McCovey hit a homer with a man on base for the Padres' runs in the seventh.
Giants 4, Reds 3 at San Francisco (night game):
Chris Speier doubled in the ninth inning, scoring Marc Hill from first base, to bring the Giants a 4-3 victory over the Reds. Von Joshua singled with the bases loaded in the fourth to account for the Giants' first two runs, but the Reds picked up a pair on a double by Tony Perez in the fifth and went ahead with a walk and triple by George Foster in the seventh. With two out and the bases loaded in the Giants' half, Horace Speed was hit by a pitch to force in the tying tally. Then in the ninth, Chris Arnold singled and was forced by Hill before Speier rapped his double.
