Indians 8, Red Sox 1 at Boston (night game):
Gaylord Perry struck out nine and moved into 14th place on the all-time list with a career total of 2,338 while pitching the Indians to an 8-1 victory over the Red Sox. Boog Powell backed Perry with a single and homer, driving in three runs, while George Hendrick, who had three hits, accounted for two RBIs. The Red Sox, who collected only five hits off Perry, produced their run in the fifth inning on a single by Doug Griffin, pass to Bernie Carbo and single by Dwight Evans.
Angels 7, Royals 6 at Kansas City (night game):
A two-run rally in the ninth inning on a single by Mickey Rivers and doubles by Tommy Harper and Bruce Bochte brought the Angels a 7-6 victory over the Royals.
Brewers 6, Tigers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Three singles by Robin Yount and a two-run homer by George Scott were among the Brewers' hits in a 6-2 victory over the Tigers, who were stopped on their five-game winning streak. Yount drove in a run in the fifth inning and was on base when Scott connected for his homer in the eighth.
Yankees 6, Orioles 4 at New York (night game):
Wasting no time, Bobby Bonds swung at the second pitch delivered by reliever Bob Reynolds and smashed a homer with two men on base to climax the rally that gave the Yankees a 6-4 victory over the Orioles. A homer by Tommy Davis and two-run double by Dave Duncan paced the Orioles to a 4-2 lead before the Yankees began their rally in the ninth with a run on singles by Walt Williams, Roy White and Elliott Maddox. The Orioles then brought in Reynolds to replace Grant Jackson in a move that failed when Bonds hit his homer.
Rangers 8, White Sox 2 at Texas (night game):
Jim Spencer drove in four runs with a homer and double to pace the Rangers to an 8-2 victory over the White Sox. Spencer his his homer with Mike Hargrove on base in the third inning to break a 2-2 tie. In the next stanza, after Lenny Randle and Hargrove drew walks, Spencer drove them across the plate with his double.
Cubs 7, Mets 4 at Chicago (day game):
Starting with five runs in the first inning, the Cubs posted a 7-4 victory over the Mets, who were stopped on their seven-game winning streak. The outburst at the expense of Jon Matlack began with a single by Jose Cardenal and homer by Bill Madlock. After two out, George Mitterwald and Rick Monday walked and Manny Trillo drove them home with a double. A wild pitch and single by Ray Burris then added the fifth run.
Dodgers 5, Braves 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
The Dodgers extended their winning streak to seven games by defeating the Braves, 5-2, to hand Carl Morton his first loss of the season after five straight victories. The Dodgers started the scoring in the first inning with a run on singles by Davey Lopes and Lee Lacy and a double by Jim Wynn. A single by Rick Auerbach, pass to Lopes, single by Lacy and error by Darrell Evans added two tallies in the second. The Braves closed the gap when Vic Correll singled and Larvell Blanks homered in the fourth, but the Dodgers pulled away with their final two runs in the sixth on singles by Doug Rau and Lopes around a passed ball, an error by Ralph Garr and single by Lacy.
Phillies 2, Expos 1 at Philadelphia (night game):
A loser of three previous decisions, Steve Carlton gained his first victory of the season when the Phillies defeated the Expos, 2-1. Carlton owed thanks to Dave Cash, who collected four hits, scored one run and drove in the other. In the first inning, Cash singled, took second when Mike Schmidt was hit by a pitch and crossed the plate on a single by Greg Luzinski. Mike Anderson singled in the seventh, Carlton sacrificed and Cash singled to drive in what proved to be the winning run. Barry Foote homered for the Expos' counter in the eighth.
Pirates 5, Cardinals 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
The Pirates, who lost to the Cardinals, 3-0, in the previous night's game, swung the whitewash brush in turn and gained a 5-0 victory behind the five-hit pitching of Jerry Reuss, who was a winner for the first time this season. Loser Bob Gibson allowed only three hits in five innings, but they included homers by Richie Zisk and Willie Stargell, as well as an unearned run on an error by the Cards' pitcher and a double by Manny Sanguillen.
Padres 4, Astros 2 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres erupted for all their runs after two were out in the fifth inning and defeated the Astros, 4-2, to snap their five-game losing streak. Sonny Siebert, who was credited with his third straight victory, drew a walk to start the Padres' uprising against Larry Dierker and scored on singles by Enzo Hernandez and Bobby Tolan. Johnny Grubb followed with a double, driving in two runs. After an intentional pass to Willie McCovey, Dave Winfield doubled to produce the Padres' fourth tally. Bob Watson homered for the Astros in the fourth and their other run counted in the seventh on a single by Jose Cruz and double by Tommy Helms.
Reds 4, Giants 1 at San Francisco (day game):
Ken Griffey and Tony Perez each drove in two of the Reds' runs in a 4-1 victory over the Giants. Griffey accounted for his RBIs with a triple in the second inning, while Perez homered with a man on base in the fifth.
