Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 7, Indians 6 at Boston (day game):
A homer by designated hitter Jim Rice in the fifth inning provided the Red Sox with their deciding run in a 7-6 victory over the Indians. The Red Sox got rid of Jim Perry quickly. In the first, a double by Bernie Carbo, single by Carl Yastrzemski, pass to Fred Lynn and double by Rico Petrocelli put three runs on the scoreboard. Rick Burleson singled in the second and Carbo homered to kayo Perry. The Red Sox added another run in the third. Rice's drive in the fifth then enabled the Red Sox to withstand a rally by the Indians, who scored three of their runs on a homer by John Ellis.

Royals 11, Angels 10 at Kansas City (night game):
Facing defeat when the Angels scored in the 13th inning, the Royals rallied for two runs in their half to come out ahead, 11-10, in a game marked by a total of 33 hits. The Angels, who had a two-run homer by Joe Lahoud, held a 9-7 lead with two out in the seventh when Jim Wohlford beat out a bunt and Tony Solaita tied the score with a pinch-homer. In the 13th, Tommy Harper singled, stole second and raced home on an infield single by Dave Chalk to break the deadlock. George Brett singled with one away in the Royals' half and was forced by Bob Stinson for the second out, but Cookie Rojas came through with a double, driving in Stinson, and Buck Martinez followed with a single as Rojas scored the winning run.

Brewers 17, Tigers 3 at Milwaukee (day game):
Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's career record for runs batted in while collecting four of the Brewers' 17 hits in a 17-3 walloping of the Tigers. A single by Aaron in the third inning scored Sixto Lezcano and raised his RBI total to 2,210, one more than Ruth's mark. Aaron batted in another run with a double in the fifth. Robin Yount also had a big day at the plate with a homer and double, driving in four runs. Darrell Porter hit a homer and triple for three RBIs. Willie Horton hit a two-run homer for the Tigers in the first inning and tied the score at 3-3 with a run-scoring single in the fifth before the Brewers exploded for five runs in their half. Don Money beat out an infield hit and scored on a double by Yount. Aaron's double and Porter's triple added two more runs. Another pair then scored on an error and triple by Pedro Garcia. Yount homered with two aboard during another five-run outburst in the seventh and Porter's homer accounted for two of the Brewers' four runs in the eighth.

Yankees 5, Orioles 0 at New York (night game):
Posting his first shutout in a Yankee uniform, Catfish Hunter allowed only five hits and beat the Orioles, 5-0. Jim Palmer, who started for the Orioles, matched pitches with Hunter until the fourth inning when Chris Chambliss singled and Thurman Munson homered. In the sixth, after a double by Chambliss and two walks filled the bases, Ron Blomberg batted for Jim Mason and doubled to drive in the other three runs.

Rangers 2, White Sox 1 at Texas (night game):
An infield hit by Lenny Randle with two out in the ninth inning enabled the Rangers to defeat the White Sox, 2-1, for their fifth straight victory. The Rangers scored their first run in the fourth on singles by Leo Cardenas, Jeff Burroughs and Jim Fregosi. The White Sox tied the game with an unearned run in the fifth. After Fregosi dropped a foul pop by Brian Downing for an error, Downing returned to the plate and doubled. After moving up on an infield out, Downing came home on a sacrifice fly by Buddy Bradford. The Rangers' winning run also was unearned. With one out, Jim Sundberg was hit by a pitch. Cesar Tovar grounded to shortstop Bucky Dent, who threw to second in an attempt to start a double play, but Jorge Orta dropped the ball. Sundberg reached third on the error and crossed the plate on Randle's hit.

Cubs 5, Mets 2 at Chicago (day game):
A leg cramp forced Steve Stone off the mound in the sixth inning, but the righthander received credit for his fourth straight victory when the Cubs defeated the Mets, 5-2. The Cubs took a 2-0 lead before the Mets tied the score in the third on a double by Del Unser, walk to Rusty Staub, and singles by John Milner and Ed Kranepool. Stone batted himself back into the lead in the fourth. After Pete LaCock singled and Manny Trillo was hit by a pitch, Stone singled, scoring LaCock and putting the Cubs ahead to stay.

Astros 6, Padres 3 at San Diego (day game):
Ken Forsch, who was used entirely as a reliever by the Astros last season, made his first start since 1973 and pitched seven innings to gain a 6-3 victory over the Padres. Bob Watson and Enos Cabell each had three hits in support of Forsch. A double by Cabell, single by Cesar Cedeno, an infield out and single by Bob Watson started the Astros' scoring in the first inning. After Watson homered in the third, Doug Rader batted in two runs with a double in the fifth. Singles by Tommy Helms and Cabell, around a sacrifice, added the Astros' final tally in the sixth. All three of the Padres' runs scored on sacrifice flies.
