Today's scores and summaries:

A's 4, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
A single by Claudell Washington in the 12th inning for his fourth hit of the game led to the run that gave the Athletics a 4-3 victory and sent the White Sox down to their fifth straight defeat. The A's counted twice in the first on a single by Bert Campaneris, pass to Reggie Jackson, double by Joe Rudi and sacrifice fly by Billy Williams. Their third run registered in the fifth on singles by Bill North and Rudi around a passed ball. All three of the White Sox runs were unearned. In the 12th, after Washington singled, Terry Forster failed in an attempted forceout on a grounder by Larry Haney. Ted Kubiak then sacrificed before North singled to drive in Washington.

Indians 4, Orioles 3 at Cleveland (night game):
The batting comination of Charlie Spikes and Rico Carty, who drove in two runs apiece, enabled the Indians to gain a 4-3 victory over the Orioles, who went down to their fifth straight defeat. Carty homered in the second inning, but the Orioles came back with a round-tripper by Elrod Hendricks in the third. After Spikes put the Indians ahead again with a run-scoring single in their half of the third, the Orioles forged in front with two runs in seventh on homer by Lee May and pinch-double by Jim Northrup. However in the eighth, Spikes tied the score with a double and then crossed the plate with the winning run on a single by Carty.

Brewers 4, Yankees 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Homers by Mike Hegan and Don Money provided the Brewers with their winning margin in a 4-2 victory over the Yankees. The Brewers counted their first two runs in the third inning on a safe bunt by Bob Coluccio, single by Money, sacrifice by Robin Yount, sacrifice fly by Sixto Lezcano and double by George Scott after the Yankees counted a pair when Elliott Maddox singled after Graig Nettles and Sandy Alomar singled and Roy White walked to load the bases. Hegan broke the tie with his homer in the fourth and Money supplied an insurance run with his round-tripper in the fifth.

Twins 4, Royals 1 at Minnesota (day game):
The Twins, idled six days by rainouts and open dates, got back into action with a 4-1 victory over the Royals. The Twins jumped into a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a bases-loaded single by Dan Ford and added a run in the fourth when Eric Soderholm doubled and Glenn Borgmann singled. After the Royals picked up their run in the fifth on singles by Vada Pinson and Fred Patek around a walk, the Twins wrapped up the scoring in their half with a pass to Steve Brye and singles by Bobby Darwin and Steve Braun.

Rangers 4, Angels 3 at Texas (night game):
Capping a four-run rally in the ninth inning, the Rangers scored on a wild pitch by Frank Tanana to defeat the Angels, 4-3, for their sixth straight victory. Singer, who started for the Angels, allowed only three hits and held a 3-0 lead going into the fatal ninth. Leading off, Jeff Burroughs struck out, but the pitch was wild and Burroughs reached first safely. Mike Hargrove followed with a double and Rpy Howell walked to load the bases. With a count of two balls on Joe Lovitto, Singer was removed in favor of Mickey Scott, who completetd the pass, forcing in the first run. Roy Smalley drove in the second run with a sacrifice fly and Jim Sundberg followed with a single to tie the score. Dick Lange relieved and passed Cesar Tovar to reload the bases. The Angels then brought in Tanana, who uncorked a wild pitch on his third delivery to Willie Davis, allowing Lovitto to score the winning run.

Braves 6, Reds 5 at Cincinnati (night game):
Connecting for the Braves' third homer of the game, Larvell Blanks hit for the circuit with two out in the ninth inning to beat the Reds, 6-5. The Braves took the lead in the second with a round-tripper by Earl Williams, double by Blanks and single by Ralph Garr, but the Reds went ahead, 3-2, before Williams singled in the sixth, Vic Correll walked and Cito Gaston came through with a homer as a pinch-hitter for Ron Reed. In the Reds' half, Pete Rose walked, took third on a double by Dave Concepcion and continued home when Blanks bobbled the throw from the outfield. Joe Morgan then singled to score Concepcion with the tying run.

Dodgers 3, Padres 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Playing before a Ball Night crowd of 53,701, the Dodgers extended their winning streak to eight games when Don Sutton shut out the Padres, 3-0. Steve Garvey homered in the fourth inning for the only run that Sutton really needed, but the Dodgers went on to add another tally in that same stanza on singles by Willie Crawford and Ron Cey around a wild pitch by Dan Spillner. Lee Lacy singled in the fifth, advanced to second on an error and scored the final run on a single by Cey.

Mets 3, Expos 0 at New York (night game):
Jerry Koosman not only pitched a four-hit shutout but also drove in the Mets' first run with a single in a 3-0 victory over the Expos. Koosman's hit came with two out in the second inning and scored Jack Heidemann, who had tripled. Doubles by Rusty Staub and John Milner produced another run in the fifth and the final marker crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Felix Millan in the eighth. Koosman's shutout was the first to the credit of the Mets' pitching staff this season.

Phillies 9, Pirates 5 at Philadelphia (night game):
Taking advantage of two errors, the Phillies scored four unearned runs in the first inning to start on their way to a 9-5 victory over the Pirates. Dave Cash opened with a single and when Larry Bowa grounded to Rennie Stennett, both runners were safe on the second baseman's wild throw, attempting to start a double play. Willie Montanez walked to load the bases. After Greg Luzinski popped up, Jay Johnstone lined to Richie Hebner, who threw the ball away trying for a double play, Cash scoring. Mike Schmidt then took full advantage of the situation with a three-run homer. The Phillies added a run in the second on singles by Cash and Montanez and a grounder by Luzinski before making it 8-0 in the fourth when Wayne Twitchell doubled, Bowa singled, Montanez doubled and Johnstone singled. Dave Parker homered for the Pirates in the fifth, but the Phillies picked up a run in the sixth on a triple by Bowa and single by Tony Taylor. The Pirates then made the game close with four runs in the last three innings.

Giants 5, Astros 4 at San Francisco (night game):
After failing to hold a three-run lead in the ninth inning, Randy Moffitt was credited with a victory -- "but I don't deserve it" -- when the Giants came back to defeat the Astros, 5-4. The Giants took a 4-1 lead in the eighth when Ed Goodson knocked in two runs with a double and Steve Ontiveros added another tally with a single. Mike Caldwell, who started for the Giants, was removed in the ninth after giving up a single by Bob Watson. Moffitt, in relief, passed Cliff Johnson and then served up a score-tying homer by Jose Cruz. In the Giants' half, Von Joshua walked, raced to third on a wild pickoff throw by Jim York and scored the winning run when Derrel Thomas singled for his fourth hit of the game.

Cardinals 5, Cubs 1 at St. Louis (night game):
Coming off a poor road trip (1-5), the Cardinals opened a homestand by defeating the Cubs, 5-1, behind the three-hit pitching of Bob Forsch. The Cards began their attack quickly when Bake McBride homered on Rick Reuschel's third pitch of the game. In the second, Ron Fairly singled, Keith Hernandez tripled and Ken Reitz homered for three more runs. The Cubs picked up a tainted tally in the fourth before the Cardinals added their last run in the fifth on a pass to Reggie Smith, wild pickoff throw by Milt Wilcox and sacrifice fly by Ted Simmons.
