Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 4, Yankees 3 at Baltimore (night game):
Climaxing a four-hit night, Al Bumbry singled with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to drive in the run that gave the Orioles a 4-3 victory over the Yankees. The Orioles caught up with the Yankees and tied the score in the eighth when pinch-hitter Tom Shopay walked and Bobby Grich hit a homer. With one out in the ninth, Ken Singleton singled and was sacrificed to second by Brooks Robinson. Elrod Hendricks walked. When Jim Northrup came to the plate as a pinch-hitter, the Yankees brought in Sparky Lyle to replace Doc Medich. The Orioles switched to Tommy Davis, who drew a pass to fill the sacks, setting the stage for Bumbry's hit.

White Sox 3, Twins 2 at Chicago (night game):
A pinch-single by Deron Johnson with the bases loaded in the ninth inning climaxed a three-run rally and brought the White Sox a 3-2 victory over the Twins. Bert Blyleven, pitching for the Twins, allowed only five hits before being removed after walking Bill Melton to open the ninth. Bill Campbell, in relief, retired Bill Sharp, but Tony Muser and Ken Henderson singled, Melton scoring. After Campbell walked Brian Downing to load the bases, Tom Burgmeier took over. Johnson then batted for Pat Kelly and singled to drive in the tying and winning runs.

Red Sox 4, Indians 2 at Cleveland (night game):
With a homer by Jim Rice to set it off, the Red Sox scored three runs in the sixth inning and defeated the Indians, 4-2, for their fifth straight victory. Rice's blow broke a 1-1 tie. Rico Petrocelli, Dwight Evans and Tony Conigliaro followed with singles for another tally. The third run then counted on a grounder by Bob Montgomery.

Brewers 7, Tigers 5 at Detroit (night game):
A three-run homer by Sixto Lezcano and three-run double by George Scott enabled the Brewers to defeat the Tigers, 7-5. Lezcano hit his homer in the fourth inning and Bobby Mitchell drove in another run with a double as the Brewers took a 4-1 lead. The Tigers tied the score in their half. After Bill Champion gave up one run and was lifted, two others counted on a wild pitch by Ediardo Rodriguez and grounder by Tom Veryzer. However, Rodriguez allowed only two hits in six innings of relief and was the winner when the Brewers broke away in the seventh. Darrell Porter started the stanza with a triple. Don Money walked with one out and stole second. Mickey Lolich passed Robin Yount intentionally to load the bases and then struck out Mitchell, but Scott came through with his double to clear the sacks. Leon Roberts homered for the Tigers in the ninth.

Royals 6, Rangers 5 at Kansas City (night game):
The Royals took advantage of two errors and scored a pair of unearned runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Rangers, 6-5. Hal McRae reached second on an error by Roy Howell and Harmon Killebrew walked. McRae advanced to third after George Brett flew out and scored on a single by Jim Wohlford. Rodney Scott, running for Killebrew, took third on Wohlford's hit and scored what proved to be the winning run on a wild throw by Jim Sundberg during a rundown.

After being shut out on two hits over the first six innings, the Athletics exploded for nine runs in the seventh, capping their outburst with a a grand-slam homer by Sal Bando, to defeat the Angels, 9-1. Bill Singer suddenly lost his stuff and was followed by Don Kirkwood, Mickey Scott and Chuck Dobson, who was on the mound for Bando's homer. A walk to Billy Williams, stolen base by pinch-runner Matt Alexander and single by Gene Tenace produced the the A's first run to tie the score at 1-1. Pinch-singles by Charlie Sands and Jim Holt added the go-ahead marker. After a walk to Bert Campanerts, Claudell Washington hit a two-run single. Joe Rudi drew a pass and Angel Mangual singled for a fifth run before Bando's belt put the icing on the cake.

Giants 6, Braves 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Jim Barr pitched a six-hitter and Willie Montanez drove in two runs, one of them with his first homer since joining the Giants, to mark a 6-2 victory over the Braves. Singles by Derrel Thomas and Bobby Murcer, an infield out by Montanez and single by Chris Speier produced two runs in the first inning. Speier doubled and scored on a single by Dave Rader in the fourth, giving Barr enough margin to win, but the Giants added singletons in each of the last three stanzas. Montanez homered in the eighth. Mike Lum hit one for the Braves.

Reds 10, Padres 2 at Cincinnati (day game):
Johnny Bench hit the fifth grand-slam homer of his major league career as the Reds' biggest blow in a 10-2 victory over the Padres. The Reds scored their first two runs in the fourth inning when Joe Morgan drew one of his four straight walks in the game and Tony Perez homered. In the fifth, singles by Cesar Geronimo, Pete Rose and Dave Concepcion, together with an error, produced two more runs and, after Morgan walked to load the bases, Bench hit his grand slam. George Foster singled with the bases loaded in the seventh to account for the Reds' final pair.
