Today's scores and summaries:

Tigers 6, Brewers 4 at Detroit (night game):
Sensational relief pitching by John Hiller, who struck out seven batters in three innings, including six in a row, featured the Tigers' 6-4 victory over the Brewers. Vern Ruhle, who started for the Tigers, served up two-run homers by George Scott and Don Money before giving way to Ray Bare, who received credit for his first A. L. victory, thanks to Hiller's blazing finish. The Tigers scored four runs in the fourth on singles by Dan Meyer and Leon Roberts, a double by Aurelio Rodriguez, single by Tom Veryzer and triple by Ron LeFlore. Meyer then broke a 4-4 tie with a homer in the sixth.

Rangers 5, Royals 3 at Kansas City (night game):
Willie Davis, who tied the score with a two-run homer in the seventh inning, singled in the ninth for his fourth hit of the game to lift the Rangers to a 5-3 victory over the Royals. A homer by John Mayberry helped the Royals take a 3-1 lead before Jim Sundberg singled and Davis knotted the count with his round-tripper. Then in the ninth, after singles by Cesar Tovar and Lenny Randle, Davis drove in the tie-breaking tally. Jeff Burroughs, who had struck out four times previously, followed with a double for an insurance run.

Angels 5, A's 0 at Oakland (night game):
Nolan Ryan pitched a four-hitter for his second shutout and sixth victory of the season as the Angels defeated the Athletics, 5-0. Ryan struck out 10, marking the 70th time in his career that the ace righthander had fanned 10 or more batters in one game. The Angels gave Ryan enough runs to win, with two in the fifth inning on singles by Bob Allietta, Jerry Remy, Morris Nettles and Mickey Rivers. Just to be sure, the Angels added three more runs in the seventh on a single by Allietta, pass to Nettles, triple by Rivers and single by Tommy Harper.

Braves 3, Giants 2 at Atlanta (night game):
Putting down a threat in the ninth inning, Tom House saved a victory for Ron Reed as the Braves defeated the Giants, 3-2. Chris Speier doubled to start the Giants' rally, Steve Ontiveros walked and Dave Rader singled to load the bases with one out. Glenn Adams delivered a pinch-single, driving in two runs and routing Reed. House struck out Von Joshua and got Derrel Thomas on a grounder to end the game. The Braves scored their first run in the opening frame on singles by Ralph Garr and Marty Perez and a sacrifice fly by Dusty Baker. A double by Darrell Evans and single by Baker added a run in the fourth. Larvell Blanks tripled in the seventh and scored what proved to be the winning run when Biff Pocoroba grounded out.

Padres 3, Reds 0 at Cincinnati (night game):
Randy Jones, who had an 8-22 record as a rookie with the Padres last season, continued his transformation into a winning pitcher by beating the Reds, 3-0. The shutout was the second of the season for Jones, who allowed only four hits in gaining his fourth victory against two defeats. Gene Locklear backed Jones with four hits and Dave Winfield had two, including a homer. A double by Locklear and single by Steve Huntz supplied the Padres' initial run in the third inning. Winfield homered in the fourth and the final tally followed in the eighth on a double by Locklear, bunt by Huntz and sacrifice fly by Johnny Grubb.

Pirates 4, Mets 2 at New York (day game):
Bruce Kison helped his own cause by driving in two runs with a single while pitching the Pirates to a 4-2 victory over the Mets. Kison's hit in the fifth inning, breaking a 1-1 tie, came after a pass to Manny Sanguillen, single by Dave Parker and sacrifice bunt by Frank Taveras. Bob Robertson added a run with a homer in the sixth before John Milner hit for the circuit in the Mets' half of the inning.

Phillies 6, Cardinals 2 at St. Louis (day game):
Garry Maddox and Greg Luzinski batted in three runs apiece to account for the Phillies' scoring in a 6-2 victory over the Cardinals. Maddox, playing in his second game with the Phillies since being obtained from the Giants, hit a triple and two doubles. Luzinski produced his RBIs with a double and two singles.
