Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 3, White Sox 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Jim Kaat's streak of five straight victories this year and 12 in a row over two seasons came to an end when the Orioles defeated the White Sox, 3-2. A double by Bill Stein led to a White Sox run off Ross Grimsley in the third inning, but the Orioles bounced ahead with a pair in the fourth on a single by Lee May, triple by Bobby Grich and sacrifice fly by Brooks Robinson. After two walks and a single by Buddy Bradford tied the score in the fifth, the Orioles put over the winning run in their half when Paul Blair tripled and Tommy Davis doubled.

Angels 5, Yankees 0 at California (night game):
Nolan Ryan gave up seventh-inning singles by Bobby Bonds and Chris Chambliss but otherwise held the Yankees hitless while pitching the Angels to a 5-0 victory for his third shutout of the season. Doc Medich, who started for the Yankees, gave way in his duel with Ryan when the Angels scored with two out in the sixth inning on a walk to Bruce Bochte and singles by Joe Lahoud and Dave Chalk. A triple by Tom Egan, single by Morris Nettles, a sacrifice and single by Bochte added two runs in the seventh. Billy Smith doubled off reliever Sparky Lyle with the bases loaded in the eighth for the final pair.

Royals 8, Tigers 7 at Detroit (night game):
The Royals, who built up a 7-1 lead, appeared to be on safe ground, but as it turned out they needed another run in the eighth inning to outlast the Tigers, 8-7. Bob Stinson batted in three runs with a pair of doubles and Tony Solaita accounted for two RBIs with a homer and single to pace the Royals to their big lead. Nate Colbert, who tripled and scored in the second inning, started the Tigers' comeback with a two-run homer in the seventh. The Royals then added what proved to be the deciding run in the eighth. Fred Patek doubled, stopped at third on a single by George Brett and scored on a sacrifice fly by Hal McRae. The Tigers almost overtook Royals with four runs in the ninth on singles by Colbert and Bill Freehan, double by Leon Roberts and homer by Dan Meyer before their rally died.

Indians 3, Twins 2 at Minnesota (night game):
A homer by Buddy Bell and the relief work of Dennis Eckersley enabled the Indians to defeat the Twins, 3-2. The Indians got to Vic Albury for two runs in the third inning with the aid of an unusual double. Charlie Spikes walked and when Jack Brohamer laid down a drag bunt, the ball went past second baseman Rod Carew and rolled into the outfield for a two-base hit, Spikes stopping at third. Frank Duffy then drove in both runners with a double. Bell hit his homer in the fifth to provide what proved to be the deciding run. The Twins chased Fritz Peterson in the seventh when Bobby Darwin doubled, Eric Soderholm walked and Larry Hisle singled for a run with none out. Eckersley yielded a sacrifice fly by Steve Braun and issued an intentional pass to Tony Oliva, but retired the Twins in order the rest of the way, striking out four, to receive credit for his first major league save.

A's 9, Red Sox 5 at Oakland (night game):
Ken Holtzman, who relieved in the fifth inning and faced only one batter, striking out Carl Yastrzemski on three pitches, gained credit for the victory when the Athletics defeated the Red Sox, 9-5. Glenn Abbott, who started for the A's, was staked to a 4-0 lead but blew up in the fifth. The Red Sox loaded the bases and scored one run on a pass to Rick Miller before Rick Burleson cleared the sacks with a double to bring Holtzman to the mound. Joe Rudi broke the tie with a homer in the A's half of the fifth. Paul Lindblad and Jim Todd finished for the A's, who clinched their victory when Billy Williams homered with two men on base in the seventh inning.

Rangers 5, Brewers 0 at Texas (night game):
After giving up singles to the first two batters, Jim Bibby retired the next 15 men in a row and pitched the Rangers to a 5-0 victory over the Brewers in a game called because of rain with two out in the bottom half of the fifth inning. The Rangers were more productive in the first. Cesar Tovar homered on the second pitch thrown by Jim Slaton. Two outs later, Jeff Burroughs walked and Jim Spencer followed with a round-tripper.

Cubs 2, Astros 1 at Chicago (day game):
The Cubs scored one run on a balk and another on a wild pitch and passed ball to defeat the Astros, 2-1, giving Steve Stone his fifth straight victory. In the third inning, after a single by Don Kessinger and passes to Rick Monday and Jerry Morales, Doug Konieczny was called for a balk, sending Kessinger home. The Astros tied the score with an unearned run in the fifth. Doug Rader reached second on a throwing error by Bill Madlock and crossed the plate after two out on a single by Greg Gross. The Cubs put over their winning run in the eighth. Madlock singled and Monday walked. After both runners advanced on a wild pitch, Madlock scored when catcher Milt May let a pitch by Konieczny get by him for a passed ball.

Braves 9, Expos 4 at Montreal (night game):
Exploding for six runs in the fifth inning, the Braves defeated the Expos, 9-4. The Expos held a 2-1 lead before the Braves began their assault when Ron Reed walked, Ralph Garr singled and Marty Perez was safe on a fielder's choice to load the bases. Darrell Evans singled to drive in one run, Earl Williams plated a pair with a single and Mike Lum batted in two more with a triple before Larvell Blanks capped the outburst with a single to score Lum.

Phillies 4, Reds 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
With the help of two great catches by Mike Anderson in right field, Tom Underwood was able to pitch the Phillies to a 4-0 victory over the Reds. The shutout was the second for the rookie lefthander. In the third inning, Anderson made a leaping catch against the wall to rob Joe Morgan of an apparent double. Then in the fourth with the bases loaded and two out, Anderson raced into foul territory to grab a drive by Pete Rose. Anderson also helped Underwood with his bat, hitting a triple in the third and scoring the Phillies' first run on a single by Dave Cash. Greg Luzinski homered in the fourth.

Pirates 2, Padres 0 at Pittsburgh (night game):
In addition to striking out 12 for his career high, Jerry Reuss allowed only three hits in pitching the Pirates to a 2-0 victory over the Padres. Two of the Pirates' lightest hitters combined for the first run when Paul Popovich singled and Frank Taveras tripled in the third inning. Reuss scored the other run in the eighth, hitting a single and coming around on a sacrifice by Taveras, a wild pickoff attempt by Bill Greif and sacrifice fly by Manny Sanguillen.

Dodgers 5, Cardinals 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Burt Hooton, who was obtained from the Cubs, gained his first victory in a Dodgers' uniform, pitching a two-hitter and shutting out the Cardinals, 5-0. After Ted Sizemore doubled in the fourth inning, Hooton retired the next 15 straight batters before Luis Melendez hit a pinch-single in the ninth. The Dodgers decided the game at the expense of Lynn McGlothen in the fourth when Rick Auerbach batted in two runs with a single after a triple by Willie Crawford and two walks had loaded the bases. Davey Lopes singled and Jim Wynn homered for two more runs in the fifth. Lopes scored the final run in the seventh after stealing second for his 13th theft of the year.
