Today's scores and summaries:
[DH] Orioles 1, Angels 0 (night game) / Angels 3, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (night game):
Tommy Harper slammed two homers in the nightcap to give the Angels a 3-2 victory over the Orioles after the Orioles, on a ninth-inning Bobby Grich homer, had won the opener. After Mike Cuellar retired 17 straight batters following Harper's two-run shot in opening frame, he served another gopher ball to Harper in the seventh stanza. Don Baylor smashed a two-run homer for the Orioles in the first inning but his teammates got only two hits off Ed Figueroa the rest of the game. Jim Palmer's shutout was his third of the season and 29th of his career.
Royals 5, Red Sox 2 at Boston (night game):
Righthander Dennis Leonard notched his first major league victory in pitching the Royals to a 5-2 victory over the Red Sox. The decisive inning for the Royals was the third. Fran Healy, making his first start since sustaining a leg injury in the second game of the season, opened with a single and Fred Patek drew a walk. Jim Wohlford forced Patek at second as Healy took third. Amos Otis singled home Healy and Wohlford scored when left fielder Bernie Carbo mishandled Otis' hit. Otis, who took second on the error, scored on Hal McRae's double.
White Sox 3, Indians 2 at Chicago (night game):
Reliever Dennis Eckersley hit Buddy Bradford with the bases loaded and then walked Jorge Orta to force in the winning run as the White Sox posted a 3-2 decision over the Indians. Rookie Jim Kern had yielded just three hits going into the ninth but was removed after walking Bill Melton. Singles by Deron Johnson and Tony Muser produced one run and, after the Chisox loaded the bases, Eckersley was summoned and promptly hit Bradford and walked Orta. The Indians' first run resulted when George Hendrick stole home on a delayed double steal and their second tally came on Frank Duffy's sacrifice fly with the bases loaded.
Brewers 3, Twins 1 at Minnesota (night game):
The Brewers got all their runs and hits in the fourth inning and downed the Twins, 3-1. Don Money opened the inning with a single and scored on Bill Sharp's double. Bobby Mitchell knocked in Sharp with a single and moved to third on George Scott's single. Darrell Porter then singled to drive in Mitchell. The Twins' lone run came in the third when Danny Thompson singled, moved to second on a sacrifice and scored on Larry Hisle's single.
A's 4, Yankees 2 at New York (night game):
Vida Blue became the majors' first eight game winner of the season, hurling the A's to a 4-2 victory over the Yankees. The A's broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh when Billy Williams doubled and pinch-runner Don Hopkins scored on Sal Bando's single. They added an insurance marker in the eighth on a walk to Bill North, a sacrifice and Reggie Jackson's double. Blue permitted as many as two baserunners in only one inning, the second.
Rangers 10, Tigers 3 at Texas (night game):
Toby Harrah drove in five runs and highlighted a five-run third inning with a bases-loaded double to send the Rangers past the Tigers, 10-3. With the Rangers leading 3-1 going into the third frame, Jim Fregosi got a one-out single off loser Mickey Lolich and Tom Grieve hit a homer. Joe Lovitto then singled and Ray Bare replaced Lolich on the mound. Leo Cardenas doubled and, after Cesar Tovar walked to load the sacks, Harrah delivered his three-run double. He also drove in two other runs with a groundout and single.
Mets 10, Astros 2 at Houston (night game):
Rusty Staub and Dave Kingman belted home runs as the Mets romped to an easy 10-2 victory over the Astros. Four runs came home in the Mets' first turn at bat, Ed Kranepool driving in two with a double and Del Unser and Wayne Garrett each hitting a sacrifice fly off loser Larry Dierker. Staub's homer led off the third frame and Jerry Grote doubled home another later in the inning. Kingman's blast came in the fifth and also scored Kranepool who had led off the inning with a single. Tom Seaver gave up five hits in the first inning and was relieved by Bob Apodaca in the eighth, but still managed to get his fifth triumph of the season.
Pirates 3, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Al Oliver ripped a two-run homer in the ninth inning to give the Pirates a 3-2 victory over the Dodgers and hand Don Sutton only his second defeat in his last 21 decisions including playoff and World Series games. The Dodger hurler had a perfect game through 7 1/3 innings before consecutive singles by Richie Zisk, Dave Parker and Manny Sanguillen tied the score at 1-1. Oliver connected for his third homer of the season after Rennie Stennett singled with one out. The Dodgers took the lead in the first frame when Pirate right fielder Parker let Lee Lacy's single skip through him, allowing Lacy to go to third from where he scored on Steve Garvey's single. The Dodgers got their other run in the ninth when Garvey singled, advanced to second on an infield out and scored on a single by Ron Cey.
Expos 4, Reds 2 at Montreal (night game):
Larry Biittner hit a homer and Tony Scott drove in two runs as the Expos knocked off the Reds, 4-2. Biittner's homer came in the second to tie the score at 1-1 and the Expos took the lead for good when Scott grounded out with the bases loaded in the fourth. Tim Foli's double and Pepe Mangual's single produced another tally in the eighth and Scott's single scored Mangual. The Reds scored in the first when Expos' catcher Gary Carter failed to tag the plate on a bases-loaded force play. Their other counter came in the ninth when Pete Rose singled in Ken Griffey.
Phillies 12, Braves 8 at Philadelphia (night game):
Mike Schmidt, Larry Christenson and Larry Bowa all slammed two-run homers in the second inning and the Phillies went on to outslug the Braves, 12-8, for their fifth straight victory. Vic Correll hit a pair of two-run homers for the Braves, who knocked out Christenson with a five-run fourth. The Phillies came right back with three in their half, taking advantage of reliever Mike Thompson's wildness. Jay Johnstone singled in one run, Garry Maddox brought in another with a sacrifice fly and Dick Allen brought in a third when he walked with the bases loaded. Dave Cash singled home another Phillie run in the fifth, Allen doubled home one more in the sixth and Bowa squeezed in the final tally in the seventh.
Padres 8, Cubs 2 at San Diego (night game):
Enzo Hernandez drove in three runs with a pair of singles and a sacrifice fly and Mike Ivie got three hits to pace the Padres to an 8-2 victory over the Cubs. The Padres erupted for six runs in the first three innings off starter Bill Bonham. Dave Winfield singled in two runs in the first inning. In the second canto, Hector Torres singled with two out and Johnny Grubb walked. Hernandez singled in one run and Bobby Tolan another, putting the Padres ahead, 4-0. Hernandez drove in another run with a third-inning single and one more in the seventh with a sacrifice fly.
Giants 4, Cardinals 3 at San Francisco (night game):
A dropped fly ball and stupid baserunning by the Cardinals helped the Giants gain a 10-inning 4-3 victory. Center fielder Luis Melendez dropped Willie Montanez' fly with the bases loaded and none out in the 10th to permit Derrel Thomas to score. Thomas had opened the inning with a triple off reliever Elias Sosa and remained there while Bobby Murcer and Gary Matthews were intentionally walked. The Cards, trailing by one going into the ninth, tied the score when Lou Brock singled, stole second and scored on Melendez' double. With the bases loaded and one out, Ron Fairly lifted a fly ball to right center which Von Joshua caught but was in no position to throw home. Pinch-runner Ted Martinez broke for the plate, stopped and then resumed running. By that time the ball had reached cutoff man Montanez, whose throw to catcher Dave Rader just nipped Martinez. The game had been a see-saw battle up to the ninth with the Giants twice overcoming Cardinal one-run leads before going ahead in the eighth on Murcer's homer.
