Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 5, Orioles 1 at Baltimore (day game):
Nolan Ryan recorded his eighth victory, 5-1, with final-out help from Don Kirkwood, as the Angels broke through with four eighth-inning runs and defeated the Orioles' Mike Torrez. Singles by Tommy Harper, Bruce Bochte and Dave Chalk were good for a 1-0 California lead in the fourth. Al Bumbry's bunt single in the sixth was the first hit off Ryan, who took a 5-0 lead into the ninth after the Angels scored four unearned runs in the eighth. Mickey Rivers' single and an error by Mark Belanger on Harper's grounder plus a walk to Bochte set the stage for Leroy Stanton's bases-clearing double after Chalk's grounder forced Rivers at the plate. Tom Egan singled home Stanton with the final run of the inning. Baltimore's second -- and last -- hit was a run-scoring double by Tommy Davis in the ninth.

Red Sox 4, Royals 2 at Boston (day game):
Bernie Carbo belted a three-run homer in the third and solo shot in the fifth to account for all of the Red Sox' runs in a 4-2 triumph over the Royals. The first homer by Carbo, following a single by Doug Griffin and walk to Tim Blackwell, erased a 1-0 Royals' lead, achieved in the top of the third when Amos Otis singled, stole second and scored on Hal McRae's base hit. Fran Healy homered for K. C. in the fourth, one of six hits off Rick Wise, who went the distance for his fourth victory, ending Kansas City's winning streak at five.

Indians 7, White Sox 6 at Chicago (day game):
The Indians knocked out Wilbur Wood with a four-run third inning and survived a four-run White Sox rally against Gaylord Perry in the sixth to edge Chicago, 7-6. Wood gave up a single run in the second, but Deron Johnson hit his third homer of the season to tie the score in the bottom of the same inning. George Hendrick doubled home Buddy Bell, then scored ahead of Boog Powell, who homered in the third. The Indians expanded their lead to 7-2 in the fifth when Hendrick homered with Bell on first. The Sox' sixth-inning rally against Perry included consecutive singles by Bucky Dent, Brian Downing, Pat Kelly, Jorge Orta and Carlos May, plus an error by Charlie Spikes.

Twins 6, Brewers 0 at Minnesota (day game):
Rookie Jim Hughes tossed his second straight shutout for the Twins, limiting the Brewers to four hits, while getting home-run support from Steve Braun and Larry Hisle as Minnesota blanked Milwaukee, 6-0. Braun staked Hughes to a 2-0 lead in the third, homering on the heels of a single by Danny Thompson. Hisle closed out the scoring with a solo homer in the fifth after the Twins had counted three times in the fourth. Eric Soderholm doubled home one run after a walk to Bobby Darwin and single by Tony Oliva. Tom Kelly's sacrifice fly scored Oliva and Soderholm crossed the plate on a single by Thompson.

Yankees 9, A's 1 at New York (day game):
Tossing a four-hitter at his former teammates, Catfish Hunter was staked to a seven-run lead after only four innings and cruised to his fifth victory as the Yankees turned back the Athletics, 9-1. The A's only run was the result of a walk to Gene Tenace and singles by Claudell Washington and Phil Garner in the third. Bobby Bonds opened the N. Y. scoring in the first with a triple, then rode home on a sacrifice fly by Elliott Maddox. The Yankees tacked on two runs in the second, one in third on Thurman Munson's homer, then wrapped up their victory with four runs on only one hit in the fourth. Three walks, a hit batsman, an error, sacrifice flies by Maddox and Munson and a single by Sandy Alomar gave Hunter an 8-1 margin.

Rangers 7, Tigers 6 at Texas (day game):
Given a second chance when outfielder Leon Roberts dropped his foul pop with two out in the 11th, Tom Grieve singled home Willie Davis to give the Rangers a 7-6 victory over the Tigers. Texas pulled even at 3-3 in the eighth inning on Jim Sundberg's homer after the Tigers had used solo homers by Aurelio Rodriguez and Roberts to gain an early 3-1 advantage. Detroit scored three times in the top of the 10th on run-producing doubles by Nate Colbert and Gene Lamont, but the Rangers came from behind again to tie the score, 6-6, the big blow being a two-run homer by Jim Fregosi.

Astros 12, Mets 7 at Houston (day game):
The Astros piled up nine runs in the first three frames and outlasted the Mets, 12-7, with rookie Houston hurler Doug Konieczny gaining his second big league victory. Bob Watson drove in five runs for the winners, the first RBI coming on an infield hit which scored Greg Gross and tied the score at 1-1 in the first. Jose Cruz followed with a two-run double. Gross singled home the fourth Houston run in the second. Roger Metzger singled, Cesar Cedeno was intentionally walked and Watson cleared the bases with a double to left center. The Astros made it 9-1 in the third on an RBI triple by Gross and Metzger's run-scoring single. Watson later added his seventh homer of the season. The Mets kayoed Konieczny with four runs in the sixth and reached reliever Jim Crawford for two more in the final three innings.

Pirates 7, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (day game):
Ken Brett shackled the Dodgers on two hits -- a first-inning single and ninth-inning homer by Davey Lopes -- contributed two doubles and a single, driving in one run and scoring another as the Pirates tripped Los Angeles, 7-2. Lopes' hit, two walks and a double-play ball by Steve Garvey gave L.A. a 1-0 lead in the first, but Brett allowed only three baserunners the rest of the way. Leading, 2-1, in the sixth, the Pirates broke the game open with four runs. Frank Taveras singled home two and Brett capped the rally with his second two-bagger.

Reds 6, Expos 1 at Montreal (day game):
Gary Nolan gave up a first-inning homer to Mike Jorgensen, then blanked the Expos the rest of the way as the Reds posted a 6-1 victory, handing Montreal starter Dave McNally his fifth straight defeat. Cincinnati took a 2-1 lead in the second on singles by George Foster and Nolan, a double by Doug Flynn and a groundout. Pete Rose also hit a solo homer in the fifth and Foster connected in the sixth. The Reds added their final markers in the seventh, Nolan scoring on a wild pitch by reliever Steve Renko and Dave Concepcion singling home Rose.

Phillies 5, Braves 1 at Philadelphia (day game):
Tom Underwood tamed the Braves on four hits as the Phillies won their seventh straight game and 12th in a row at home, 5-1. A walk to Tommy Hutton, Bob Boone's single, a bunt single by Mike Anderson, throwing error by Braves' Darrell Evans and single by Underwood gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead in the second. Garry Maddox singled in the third and Greg Luzinski and Mike Schmidt hit back-to-back doubles to boost the margin to 4-0. Earl Williams' double in the fourth after Rod Gilbreath's single accounted for the only Atlanta tally.

Cubs 3, Padres 2 at San Diego (day game):
Adrian Garrett's first homer of the season, a three-run blast in the sixth, wiped out a San Diego lead and made 3-2 winners of the Cubs, who salvaged the finale of a three-game set with the Padres. Garrett connected off loser Dan Spillner after a walk to Rick Monday and Spillner's error on a ground ball by Champ Summers. The Padres held a 2-0 lead after five innings as the result of Bobby Tolan's RBI singles in the first and third innings, Johnny Grubb scoring each time.

Giants 2, Cardinals 0 at San Francisco (day game):
Jim Barr, pitching perfect ball through six innings, extended his personal streak of scoreless innings against the Cardinals to 24 as he and the Giants blanked St. Louis, 2-0. Lou Brock opened the seventh with a single, the first Cardinal hit, and also had a safety with two out in the ninth. Only three other St. Louis runners reached base. All were erased on double plays. The Giants got one run off loser Lynn McGlothen in the fifth on Von Joshua's double, a wild pitch and sacrifice fly by Bobby Murcer. A triple by Willie Montanez and single by Chris Speier accounted for the second run in the sixth.
