Today's scores and summaries:
Red Sox 10, A's 5 at Boston (night game):
The Red Sox snapped a 5-5 tie with a four-run, seventh-inning flurry and went on to defeat the Athletics, 10-5. Oakland had pulled even in the top of the inning on Gene Tenace's three-run homer. The Boston surge began when Juan Beniquez walked and scored from first on Rick Burleson's hit-and-run single. Following a walk to Carl Yastrzemski, Jim Rice doubled home two more runs, then scored himself on Dwight Evans' two-bagger. Boston's first hit off starter Dave Hamilton was Rico Petrocelli's homer with one out in the fifth. The Athletics then committed three errors as the Red Sox scored four more to take a 5-2 lead. Oakland led 2-0 after two tallied on Joe Rudi's RBI double in the opening inning and the first of Tenace's two homers, a solo shot in the second.
White Sox 2, Orioles 1 at Chicago (night game):
Jorge Orta's bases-loaded single off the foot of loser Doyle Alexander accounted for all of Chicago's scoring as the White Sox tallied twice in the third to edge the Orioles, 2-1. Orta delivered after Tony Muser and Bucky Dent singled and Pat Kelly walked. Baltimore's only run off winner Stan Bahnsen came in the second when Don Baylor homered. Reliever Rich Gossage worked out of a one-out, first-and-third jam in the seventh by getting Mark Belanger to hit into a force play, pinch-runner Tom Shopay holding third, then forcing Ken Singleton to ground into a double play.
Angels 12, Indians 5 at Cleveland (night game):
Angel rookie Jerry Remy delivered a three-run homer, his first in the majors, to cap a five-run, fourth-inning rally which sparked California to a 12-5 victory over the Indians. The visitors also got a two-run homer off the bat of Leroy Stanton to highlight a three-run first and a solo shot by Tommy Harper which opened a three-run seventh. Remy's blow came off Gaylord Perry, who relieved in the fourth with two Angels aboard and California leading, 5-3. Dick Lange, who relieved starter Andy Hassler during the Indians' three-run second, was tagged for two runs in the fourth, then shut out Cleveland the rest of the way.
Tigers 6, Twins 3 at Minnesota (night game):
Home runs by Leon Roberts, Willie Horton and Gary Sutherland accounted for all the Tiger scoring as Detroit whipped Minnesota, 6-3. Roberts staked the visitors to a quick lead with his two-run blast in the first. Horton duplicated that effort in the third. Sutherland hit solo round-trippers in the seventh and ninth innings. Winning pitcher Joe Coleman was touched for all of the Twins' tallies in the fifth, a two-run homer by Bobby Darwin and RBI single by Tom Kelly which scored Tony Oliva, who had doubled.
Yankees 5, Royals 1 at New York (night game):
Chris Chambliss swatted two solo homers and drove in a third run with a single as the Yankees broke a string of 21 scoreless innings pitched by the Royals' Steve Busby and defeated Kansas City, 5-1. New York reached Busby for two runs in the third when Roy White doubled after Sandy Alomar singled and stole second and Elliott Maddox was hit by a pitch. Chambliss hit his first homer in the fourth, produced another run with a two-out single an inning later and concluded the Yankee scoring with his second round-tripper in the eighth. Rudy May and Dick Tidrow combined to limit the Royals to four hits.
Astros 4, Phillies 2 at Houston (night game):
Defensive letdowns by loser Steve Carlton and shortstop Larry Bowa led to the end of the Phillies' seven-game winning streak as the Astros scored three unearned runs and came out on top, 4-2. Carlton's wild pickoff attempt at first base in the first inning allowed the Astros' Greg Gross to score from third with the first run of the game. Houston got two more in the fourth on one hit, a wild pitch and two throwing errors by Bowa. Bob Watson's eighth homer of the year accounted for the final Houston run in the sixth. Astros' outfielders Gross and Enos Cabell threw out Phillie runners at the plate to help preserve starter Tom Griffin's second victory.
Dodgers 3, Cubs 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
A bases-loaded sacrifice fly by pinch-hitter Bill Buckner chased home Steve Garvey with the deciding run in the eighth inning as the Dodgers edged the Cubs, 3-2, in the first meeting of the season between the division leaders. L. A. starter Doug Rau drove in the first run of the game with a single in the fifth which scored Tom Paciorek from third. The Dodgers increased the margin to 2-0 in the sixth on a double by Willie Crawford and two-out single by Ron Cey. The Cubs chased Rau in the eighth when Jose Cardenal doubled following singles by Don Kessinger and Manny Trillo. The Dodgers loaded the bases in the eighth against Darold Knowles when Jim Wynn walked and Garvey and Cey got infield singles. Reliever Oscar Zamora got Joe Ferguson to hit into a force play at the plate before Buckner drove home Garvey with his long fly ball to right.
Padres 1, Cardinals 0 at San Diego (night game):
Johnny Grubb put an end to a pitching duel between the Padres' Randy Jones, who allowed only one hit, and John Curtis, who was touched for six safeties, with a one-out, 10th-inning homer which gave San Diego a 1-0 victory over the Cardinals. The only St. Louis hit off Jones, who went the distance, was a seventh-inning single by Luis Melendez. Grubb's homer was his first of the season and his fourth hit of the game. The Padres retired 21 Cardinals on infield grounders.
Giants 6, Pirates 4 at San Francisco (day game):
Chipping in with a three-run double in the third inning, Mike Caldwell won for the first time in six mound decisions as the Giants turned back the Pirates, 6-4. The San Francisco starter also had a hand in the Giants' first run. His single, a walk and a base hit by Von Joshua gave the home club a 1-0 lead in the second. Caldwell's two-bagger cleared the bases in the next frame as the Giants scored four times. After the Pirates countered with three runs in the fourth on a walk, single by Manny Sanguillen and doubles by Rennie Stennett and Dave Parker, the Giants tacked on an insurance run in the home half on a pair of walks and two infield outs. Parker homered to lead off the seventh inning for the final Pittsburgh run.
