Today's scores and summaries:

Angels 6, Red Sox 3 at Boston (night game):
The Angels punched out five consecutive singles for three runs in the fourth inning to beat the Red Sox, 6-3. The winning rally began with two out and the Bosox ahead, 3-2. Dave Chalk singled, moved to second on Tom Egan's single and scored on Morris Nettles' smash off pitcher Rick Wise's leg. Billy Smith singled home Egan and Jerry Remy singled in Nettles. The Red Sox had taken the lead in the third on two-out singles by Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice and Fred Lynn's homer. That overcame an early Angel lead manufactured on Remy's leadoff triple and Mickey Rivers' sacrifice fly in the first and Smith's triple and Remy's sacrifice fly in the third. The Angels added one in the ninth on Nettles' single, a sacrifice and Bruce Bochte's single.

White Sox 2, Orioles 1 at Chicago (night game):
Reliever Rich Gossage twice pitched out of bases-loaded jams as the White Sox edged the Orioles, 2-1. The Sox scored their runs in the third as Brian Downing opened the frame with a walk and moved to second on Bob Coluccio's single. The runners moved up on Bucky Dent's sacrifice and scored on Carlos May's single. Sox starter Jim Kaat got in trouble in the sixth stanza when he yielded a single to Tommy Davis and walks to Don Baylor, Bobby Grich and Lee May to force in a run. Gossage then came on with two out to strike out pinch-hitter Jim Northrup. Brooks Robinson and pinch-hitter Tom Shopay singled in the seventh and advanced on a sacrifice. Gossage walked pinch-hitter Al Bumbry intentionally, struck out Davis and retired Baylor to stop the threat again. The ace reliever extended his string of innings without allowing an earned run to 33 1/3. Davis' sixth-inning single extended his hitting streak to 16 games.

Rangers 6, Brewers 0 at Milwaukee (day game):
Bill Hands scattered five hits as the Rangers downed the Brewers, 6-0, taking over first place in the A.L. West. The only run Hands needed came in the opening frame as leadoff man Cesar Tovar reached first when second sacker Pedro Garcia bobbled an easy grounder. Lenny Randle forced Tovar and, after Willie Davis grounded out, scored on Jeff Burroughs' double to the center field wall. The Rangers' other tallies came in the eighth on run-scoring singles by Davis and Mike Hargrove and Toby Harrah's two-run single. Their final tally scored in the ninth when JIm Sundberg singled, stole second and came home on Davis' double. The Brewers never got more than one hit in any inning.

Dodgers 8, Cubs 3 at Los Angeles (night game):
Ron Cey's bases-loaded double sparked a four-run rally in the sixth inning as the Dodgers defeated the Cubs, 8-3. The home team had just two hits and was trailing, 1-0, going into the bottom of the sixth. A bunt single by Davey Lopes, infield single by Willie Crawford, Jim Wynn's sacrifice and an intentional walk to Steve Garvey filled the bases. Cey then delivered his double to produce two runs. After Joe Ferguson was given an intentional walk to reload the sacks, Steve Yeager hit s sacrifice fly to score Garvey, and Rick Auerbach singled to bring in Cey and make the score 4-1. Starter Burt Hooton posted his second victory since coming to the Dodgers from the Cubs in a trade. He went 7 2/3 innings and struck out 11, including six straight strikeouts in the fifth and sixth innings.

Pirates 4, Padres 2 at San Diego (night game):
Willie Stargell's two-run homer in the fifth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and the Pirates went on to defeat the Padres, 4-2. The big blow came off starter Dave Freisleben and followed a single by Al Oliver. The Padres had tied the game in the fourth on a walk to Dave Winfield and homer by Mike Ivie. The Pirates got a first-inning run on a walk to Richie Hebner and singles by Oliver and Dave Parker. Their second marker came in the third on Richie Hebner's single and Oliver's RBI double. Jim Rooker, who hurled the first seven frames and was credited with the victory, was aided by outstanding fielding plays. Second baseman Rennie Stennett robbed Bobby Tolan of a run-producing single in the fifth and shortstop Mario Mendoza smothered a seventh-inning Padre rally by throwing out Fred Kendall at the plate.
