Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 6, Angels 0 at Boston (day game):
Rico Petrocelli and Rick Burleson slammed three-run homers to support the five-hit pitching of Bill Lee as the Red Sox won over the Angels, 6-0, in a nationally televised game. Petrocelli's blast came in the second inning and followed walks to Dwight Evans and Tony Conigliaro. Burleson's followed a single by Petrocelli and walk to Juan Beniquez. The biggest Angel threat came in the ninth but Bob Allietta grounded into a game-ending double play with the bases loaded.

White Sox 10, Tigers 8 at Chicago (day game):
The White Sox survived a seven-run seventh inning by the Tigers and hung on to gain a 10-8 victory. The Sox got a lead early, posting two runs in the second inning with the aid of an error by Gene Michael, and sent starter Joe Coleman to the showers in the third frame. Deron Johnson's three-run homer was the big blow and the inning also included a steal of home by Tony Muser. Stan Bahnsen breezed until the seventh when he yielded a three-run homer to Michael. Cecil Upshaw relieved and gave up four straight singles and three more runs before Bill Gogolewski came on to strike out Gene Lamont with two men on to end the inning.

A's 10, Indians 5 at Cleveland (day game):
The A's spotted the Indians a 5-0 lead but then came back to capture the contest, 10-5. Billy Williams' three-run homer in the fourth inning started the comeback and Sal Bando's RBI single in the fourth cut the Tribe margin to one run. A four-run sixth put the A's ahead to stay. The inning was highlighted by a run-scoring single by Gene Tenace that tied the game and a pair of bases-loaded walks off reliever Blue Moon Odom, who was making his first appearance against his ex-mates since being traded. Ted Martinez drove in the final two runs in the seventh inning with a bases-loaded single. The Indians chased starter Vida Blue in the third stanza on back-to-back homers by Rico Carty and Frank Robinson. Reliever Rollie Fingers retired 15 Indian batters in order before giving way to Paul Lindblad, who blanked the Tribe in the ninth.

Royals 5, Orioles 4 at Kansas City (night game):
Hal McRae's three-run double ended a four-run ninth-inning rally to give the Royals a 5-4 verdict over the Orioles. Bird starter Mike Torrez cruised into the ninth with a 4-1 lead but was given the hook by manager Earl Weaver after yielding a leadoff double to George Brett. Bob Reynolds relieved and was tagged for a run-scoring double by Vada Pinson. After Fran Healy grounded out, Reynolds walked pinch-hitter Tony Solaita. Wayne Garland replaced Reynolds and walked Amos Otis to load the bases before McRae belted the game-winning hit. Jim Northrup's RBI single in the third, Dave Duncan's two-run homer and a run scoring while a double play was being made in the fifth had given the Orioles a 4-0 lead. The Royals' first run came in the eighth when McRae singled, moved to second on a walk and scored on John Mayberry's single.

Twins 3, Brewers 2 at Milwaukee (night game):
Rookie righthander Jim Hughes won his fifth straight game to give the Twins a 3-2 triumph over the Brewers. The only hits off Hughes were Robin Yount's single in the first and a double by Sixto Lezcano and single by Pedro Garcia in the third when the Brewers scored both their runs. The Twins got two runs in the fifth when Danny Thompson singled, Glenn Borgmann walked and both runners advanced on Steve Braun's sacrifice. Rod Carew's sacrifice fly plated one run and the other came home when shortstop Yount threw wildly to first on Bobby Darwin's grounder. The decisive run came in the sixth as Larry Hisle opened the frame with a single, advanced to second on an infield out and scored on Thompson's single to center.

Yankees 9, Rangers 5 at New York (night game):
Bobby Bonds' three-run homer was the big blow as the Yankees downed the Rangers, 9-5. The circuit clout came in the fourth inning with the Yanks leading, 3-2, and followed a single by Chris Chambliss and pitcher Jackie Brown's error on an attempted sacrifice. Bonds opened the Yankee first inning with a walk, stole second and scored on Elliott Maddox's triple. Maddox scored on Roy White's single. After Thurman Munson bounced into a double play, Alex Johnson was safe on an error and scored on Graig Nettles' double. Joe Lovitto's sacrifice fly gave the Rangers a run in the first and Roy Howell's pinch-hit homer another in the fourth. Roy Smalley's pinch-hit double with the bases loaded accounted for the last three Ranger scores.

Mets 5, Braves 1 at Atlanta (night game):
Rookie Randy Tate gave up only four hits in seven innings and Rusty Staub hit a pair of run-scoring singles to lead the Mets to a 5-1 victory over the Braves. Tate was lifted in the eighth after walking leadoff batter Larvell Blanks and reliever Bob Apodaca finished. The Mets erupted for three runs on five singles in their first turn at bat, the runs being driven in by Ed Kranepool, Staub and Mike Phillips. Felix Millan doubled and was singled home by Staub in the fifth and John Milner singled home Gene Clines in the seventh. The Braves' only run came in the third on Vic Correll's triple and Ron Reed's RBI single.

Reds 3, Phillies 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Joe Morgan's two-out single in the 11th inning off Tug McGraw gave the Reds a 3-2 triumph over the Phillies. Merv Rettenmund's single touched off the winning rally. He moved to second and Cesar Geronimo was safe on a sacrifice attempt as Dick Allen was charged with an error after failing to cover first. Pinch-hitter Doug Flynn and Pete Rose failed to produce, each hitting infield grounders, but then Morgan came through with his key bingle. Phil starter Steve Carlton left after five innings because of being bothered by a cold. His successor, Gene Garber, gave up two homers to Johnny Bench.

Expos 2, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
Gary Carter stroked a game-winning sacrifice fly in the ninth inning and Steve Rogers hurled a four-hitter as the Expos edged the Astros, 2-1. Singles by Rich Coggins and Larry Biittner and a walk to Mike Jorgensen loaded the sacks for the Expos with one out. Joe Niekro relieved starter Doug Konieczny and Carter then drove in the winning run. The other Expos' run had come in the first frame on a homer by Pepe Mangual. The Astros tied the game in the bottom of the first on Roger Metzger's single, an infield out and Bob Watson's RBI single.

Cardinals 6, Dodgers 2 at Los Angeles (night game):
Rookie first baseman Keith Hernandez drove in two runs with his first major league homer and added another RBI with a single to lead the Cardinals to a 6-2 victory over the Dodgers. The homer broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning. Earlier, Hernandez had singled a run home in the second inning. Dodgers' runs came on Ivan DeJesus' double, a sacrifice and a wild pitch in the sixth and Ron Cey's homer in the seventh. Ken Reitz iced the game for the Cards with a two-run single in the eighth.

Padres 5, Pirates 0 at San Diego (night game):
Lefty Randy Jones hurled his second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season as the Padres beat the Pirates, 5-0. The Padres scored their first time at bat as Johnny Grubb led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice and then scored on a groundout by Bobby Tolan. Dave Winfield hit a homer in the fourth and the Padres got three more runs in the seventh on four hits and a Pirate error. Jones lowered his ERA to 1.58 while winning his fourth straight game.

Giants 10, Cubs 3 at San Francisco (day game):
Bobby Murcer's booming bat led the Giants to a 10-3 victory over the Cubs. The ex-Yankee drove in six runs with a homer and triple. His circuit clout came in the fourth with two mates aboard and capped a five-run frame that sent the Giants to a 6-3 lead. The triple came with the bases loaded in the seventh. Jim Barr, picking up his third win in seven days, was shaky at the start but settled down and retired the last 12 batters he faced.
