Today's scores and summaries:
Angels 8, Tigers 3 at California (night game):
Every Angel batter except for Morris Nettles joined in a 13-hit attack that produced an 8-3 victory over the Tigers. Willie Horton drove in his 37th run of the season for the Tigers in the first inning and Jack Pierce hit his first major league homer, connecting with a man on base in the fourth. The Angels wiped out a 3-0 deficit in their half of the fourth, two runs scoring on a single by Billy Smith. Ellie Rodriguez also batted in two runs during the game for the Angels, while Dave Chalk had two doubles and a single, scoring one run and driving in another.
Indians 8, Royals 7 at Cleveland (night game):
Capping an Indians' comeback, Buddy Bell belted a homer in the 11th to defeat the Royals, 8-7. Fran Healy batted in three runs and Tony Solaita accounted for two RBIs to help the Royals take a 7-3 lead before the Indians began their rally with three runs in the eighth on singles by Rick Manning, George Hendrick, Boog Powell and Frank Robinson and a squeeze bunt by Oscar Gamble. Then in the ninth, John Ellis singled and Manning doubled to tie the score and send the game into overtime.
Yankees 7, Twins 4 at Minnesota (day game):
Although Rod Carew smashed two homers and a single for his fifth straight three-hit game, the Twins were no match for Catfish Hunter and lost to the Yankees, 7-4. Carew drove in all four of the Twins' runs. The Yankees counted twice in the first inning. Roy White walked, went to third on a wild pickoff throw by Jim Hughes and stole home before Thurman Munson added the other run with a homer. Bobby Bonds knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single in the fourth. Chris Chambliss singled and Graig Nettles homered to break a 4-4 tie in the seventh. Nettles then drove in another run with a single in the ninth.
Cubs 8, Giants 4 at Chicago (day game):
Sending 10 men to bat, the Cubs erupted for four runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Giants, 8-4. The Cubs tagged Pete Falcone for three runs in the first. Don Kessinger doubled, moved up on an infield out and crossed the plate on a balk. A triple by Rick Monday and two walks then loaded the bases and Manny Trillo singled to drive in two runs. The Giants, after picking up a tally in the second, went ahead with three runs in the sixth on a walk to Gary Thomasson and successive singles by Derrel Thomas, Bobby Murcer, Glenn Adams and Willie Montanez. The Cubs pulled even in their half when Bill Madlock and Monday doubled. The tie-breaking outburst that followed in the eighth was fashioned with singles by Kessinger, Jose Cardenal and Madlock, a walk to Monday, singles by George Mitterwald and Trillo and a sacrifice fly by Steve Swisher.
Mets 2, Astros 1 at New York (day game):
Tom Seaver scattered six hits and struck out eight while pitching the Mets to a 2-1 victory over the Astros. Seaver gave up the Astros' run in the fifth inning on a pass to Tommy Helms, sacrifice by Tom Griffin and single by Greg Gross. Rusty Staub tied the score with a homer in the sixth. The Mets put over their winning run in the eighth. Felix Millan opened the stanza with a single and, after a sacrifice by Joe Torre, Staub was passed intentionally. Griffin then uncorked a wild pitch, leading to another intentional pass to Ed Kranepool to load the bases. Dave Kingman followed with a single through the drawn-in infield, scoring Millan, but Staub was thrown out at the plate by left fielder Gross.
