Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 7, Royals 3 at Baltimore (night game):
A triple by Tommy Davis and double by Dave Duncan helped the Orioles score five runs in the fifth inning to gain a 7-3 victory over the Royals. Davis singled for one of the Orioles' two runs in the first inning, but George Brett tied the score with a homer in the second. Davis' triple sent Al Bumbry across the plate with the tie-breaking tally in the fifth. Lee May singled to drive in Davis. After Ken Singleton singled and Paul Blair walked to load the bases, Brooks Robinson hit a sacrifice fly. Duncan then put the capper on the Orioles' scoring with his two-run double.

Red Sox 3, Twins 1 at Boston (day game):
Fred Lynn homered and drove in another run with a single among his three hits in support of Bill Lee, who pitched the Red Sox to a 3-1 victory over the Twins. Rod Carew, the major leagues' leading batter with an average of .415, was struck on the elbow by a pickoff throw in the fourth inning, but stayed in the game long enough to score the Twins' run before leaving for hospital treatment. Lynn equalized matters with his homer in the sixth before the Red Sox broke away with two runs in the eighth on a single by Bernie Carbo, a wild pitch, late throw to third on a bunt by Rick Burleson and singles by Carl Yastrzemski and Lynn.

Angels 5, Brewers 2 at California (night game):
Jerry Remy, who reached base four times on an error, two doubles and a single, scored three runs and drove in one to back up the five-hit pitching of Frank Tanana as the Angels defeated the Brewers, 5-2. After Remy was safe on a miscue by Robin Yount in the first inning, the Angels loaded the bases and Remy scored on a grounder by Tommy Harper. Remy's first double drove in one of the Angels' two runs in the second. Following his second double, Remy scored in the fifth before wrapping up his night in the seventh when he beat out a bunt, took second on an infield out, stole third and came home on a wild throw by catcher Charlie Moore.

Yankees 6, White Sox 3 at Chicago (night game):
Bobby Bonds hit two homers and drove in three runs to lead the Yankees to a 6-3 victory over the White Sox. Bonds opened the game with the 200th homer of his major league career and 30th as a leadoff batter. The White Sox came back with a pair in the second on the walk to Ken Henderson, single by Tony Muser and double by Jorge Orta, but the Yankees regained the lead in the fifth when Fred Stanley singled and Bonds hit his second homer of the game. A double by Graig Nettles, a wild pitch and infield out added a Yankee run in the seventh. After the White Sox scored in their half on a single by Bucky Dent and double by Pat Kelly, the Yankees wrapped up their victory with two runs in the eighth when Thurman Munson was safe on an error, Chris Chambliss tripled and Ed Herrmann singled.

Rangers 5, Indians 4 at Cleveland (day game):
Mike Hargrove singled in the 12th inning for his fourth hit of the game and drove in the go-ahead run as the Rangers scored twice to defeat the Indians, 5-4. Rick Manning also had four hits for the Indians. Hargrove homered in the eighth to send the Rangers ahead, 3-2, but the Indians tied the score in the ninth on singles by Frank Robinson and Charlie Spikes and a sacrifice fly by John Ellis. In the 12th, Toby Harrah, Jeff Burroughs and Hargrove put together singles for the tie-breaking tally. Hargrove was out trying for a double, but Jim Spencer walked and Lenny Randle singled to produce what proved to be the winning run. The Indians fell short in their half with a marker on a double by Duane Kuiper and a pair of infield outs.

Tigers 3, A's 0 at Oakland (day game):
Posting his first major league shutout, Lerrin LaGrow yielded only five singles and pitched the Tigers to a 3-0 victory over the Athletics. The Tigers reached Vida Blue for their first run in the fifth inning when Bill Freehan was hit by a pitch and Ron LeFlore and Gary Sutherland singled. Two more runs to clinch the victory followed in the seventh on doubles by Mickey Stanley, Tom Veryzer and LeFlore.

Reds 8, Cubs 1 at Cincinnati (night game):
Johnny Bench, Dan Driessen and Joe Morgan smashed homers as the Reds overpowered the Cubs, 8-1, behind the five-hit pitching of Jack Billingham. Bench also singled and drew a pass with the bases loaded to finish the game with four RBIs. Bench and Driessen hit their homers in succession in the second inning. Bench knocked in two more runs with a single in the third. Morgan added his homer in the fifth. The Cubs staged their only threat when they loaded the bases on singles by Pete LaCock, Don Kessinger and Jose Cardenal in the sixth, but Billingham got out of that jam at the expense of only one run on a grounder by Bill Madlock. The Reds then counted their last three runs in the home half of the sixth when Cub relievers Eddie Watt, Ken Frailing and Bob Locker each issued a pass with the bases loaded.

Cardinals 5, Astros 1 at Houston (night game):
The Cardinals extended their winning streak to five games with a 5-1 victory over the Astros, who went down to their seventh straight defeat. The Cards scored once in the second inning on a walk to Reggie Smith, a passed ball, infield out and single by Ken Reitz before the Astros picked up their run off Lynn McGlothen in the sixth on a walk to Greg Gross, single by Roger Metzger and double by Cesar Cedeno. The Redbirds broke away in the eighth with a double by Willie Davis, pass to Smith, two-run double by Ted Simmons and RBI single by Luis Melendez.

Braves 7, Mets 3 at New York (day game):
Helping himself with a two-run single, Carl Morton gained credit for the Braves' 7-3 victory over the Mets before a Photo Album Day crowd of 50,043. After the Mets took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on singles by Del Unser, Felix Millan, Joe Torre and Ed Kranepool, the Braves struck back with four runs in the second. Dusty Baker singled and scored on a double by Vic Correll. Walks to Larvell Blanks and Bob Beall loaded the bases. Morton then hit his two-run single, scoring Correll and Blanks. Ralph Garr followed with a single to drive in Beall.

Phillies 4, Dodgers 0 at Philadelphia (night game):
Dick Allen smashed his first two homers of the year and Greg Luzinski also hit for the circuit in the Phillies' support of Steve Carlton, who yielded only two singles and handed the Dodgers their first shutout of the season, 4-0. Allen, who went into the game with a batting average of .177, connected for his first homer in the second inning. After hitting a single in fourth, Allen rapped his second round-tripper in the sixth. Ollie Brown was on base with a single when Luzinski homered for the last two runs in the eighth.

Pirates 7, Giants 6 at Pittsburgh (day game):
Sparked by Richie Hebner, who hit a homer, the Pirates rallied for two runs in the eighth inning to defeat the Giants, 7-6. The Pirates batted their way to a 5-2 lead before the Giants went ahead with three runs in the eighth on a single by Derrel Thomas, double by Bobby Murcer, triple by Chris Speier and sacrifice fly by Glenn Adams. In the Pirates' half, Hebner promptly tied the score with his homer. With one out, Bob Robertson batted for Ramon Hernandez and singled. Mario Mendoza, taking the paths for Robertson, raced to third on a single by Rennie Stennett and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by Manny Sanguillen.
