Today's scores and summaries:
A's 4, Orioles 3 at Baltimore (night game):
A single by Joe Rudi scored Bill North in the 15th inning and gave the Athletics a 4-3 victory over the Orioles. The A's took a 2-0 lead in the third on a single by Sal Bando, pass to North, single by Bert Campaneris and sacrifice fly by Claudell Washington, but the Orioles picked up a run in the sixth and went ahead in the seventh. After singles by Mark Belanger and Al Bumbry and a sacrifice by Bobby Grich, Tommy Davis drew an intentional pass, bringing up Lee May, who singled to drive in two runs. Campaneris tied the score with a homer in the eighth. Then in the 15th, North walked, Campaneris sacrificed and, after an intentional pass to Washington, Rudi hit his game-winning single.
Rangers 12, Red Sox 4 at Boston (night game):
Jim Sundberg hit the first grand-slam of his major league career among four Ranger homers in a 12-4 trouncing of the Red Sox. Sundberg connected for his jackpot wallop off Rick Wise in the second inning. Not to be outdone by Sundberg, Bernie Carbo also hit a grand slam for the Red Sox off Jackie Brown in the sixth. Brown came into the game with two out in the third when starter Bill Hands pulled a leg muscle and was forced to retire. Following Sundberg's smash, Jeff Burroughs homered for the Rangers in the fifth and Toby Harrah and Jim Spencer each rapped a round-tripper with a man on base in the eighth.
Brewers 1, White Sox 0 at Chicago (night game):
Darrell Porter, who drove in all of the Brewers' runs in the previous day's 4-3 victory over the Angels, smashed a homer in the ninth inning to beat the White Sox, 1-0. The homer was the first off Rich Gossage in 54 2/3 innings this season. Bill Travers, who started for the Brewers, yielded only one hit before being lifted after Carlos May walked in the seventh. Eduardo Rodriguez in turn gave way in the ninth to Tom Murphy, who ended the game by getting Jorge Orta to hit into a double play. Gossage came into the game in relief of Claude Osteen with one out in the eighth inning.
Twins 11, Indians 10 at Cleveland (night game):
After coming from behind with four runs in the ninth inning, the Twins scored again on a single by Danny Thompson in the 11th to defeat the Indians, 11-10. Boog Powell hit a homer and single, driving in two runs, and Rico Carty plated a pair with a single to pace the Indians to a 10-6 lead before the Twins erupted in the ninth. Tony Oliva singled and Eric Soderholm walked, Tom Kelly grounded to Carty and when the first baseman made a bad throw to second trying to start a double play, Luis Gomez scored as the pinch-runner for Oliva. Dan Ford and Thompson had batted out of turn undetected previously in the game, but the Twins caught their mistake. Ford went up in his proper order and grounded out, scoring Soderholm. Thompson beat out an infield hit to drive in Kelly. Danny Walton then batted for Phil Roof and hit his first homer of the season to tie the score. In the 11th, Soderholm singled, moved up on a sacrifice and scored on Thompson's hit.
Royals 5, Tigers 2 at Kansas City (night game):
George Brett hit a tie-breaking double in the eighth inning and Amos Otis followed with an inside-the-park homer to carry the Royals to a 5-2 victory over the Tigers, ending their five-game losing streak. With two out, Jim Wohlford singled and stole second before scoring on Brett's double. Otis then cracked a line drive to right-center field and beat the relay home for his homer.
Angels 5, Yankees 3 at New York (night game):
Scoring two runs in the ninth inning, the Angels beat Catfish Hunter, 5-3, and ended the Yankees' eight-game winning streak. The Yankees scored all their runs off Bill Singer on homers. Jim Mason hit for the circuit with a man on base in the second before the Angels picked up their first run on a single by Jerry Remy and triple by Mickey Rivers in the fifth. Roy White then made it 3-1 for the Yankees with a round-tripper in the sixth. The Angels came back with the tying pair in the seventh. Rivers singled, advanced on an infield out and scored when Joe Lahoud singled. Morris Nettles, coming in to run for Lahoud, stole second and continued home with the tying run on a wild throw by catcher Thurman Munson. In the ninth, Dave Collins walked and Remy sacrificed. Following an intentional pass to Rivers, Bruce Bochte batted for Tommy Harper and singled to drive in Collins. Rivers took third on the hit and counted an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Nettles.
Cardinals 5, Braves 4 at Atlanta (night game):
Although collecting 16 hits, the Cardinals wasted many of their scoring opportunities before beating the Braves, 5-4, for their seventh straight victory. Blue Moon Odom, obtained from the Indians, made his first N. L. start for the Braves and was knocked out in the fifth inning. The Cards scored their first run on a balk by Odom in the opening frame, but the Braves then staked their new hurler to a 2-1 lead before the Cardinals tied the score in the fourth on a single by Ken Reitz, pass to Mario Guerrero and single by Lou Brock. Reggie Smith walked in the fifth and Ted Simmons homered, chasing Odom. The Cards added the deciding run in the seventh on a walk to Simmons, single by Guerrero and double by Reitz. The best the Braves could do thereafter was tighten the score with a two-run homer by Cito Gaston in the eighth.
Pirates 9, Reds 2 at Cincinnati (night game):
Dave Parker and Willie Stargell each homered with two men on base and Richie Zisk batted in three runs with a single and homer to account for the Pirates' scoring in a 9-2 victory over the Reds. Parker, a native of Cincinnati, celebrated his 24th birthday by whacking his homer in the first inning to cap a five-run outbrust. Zisk singled to bat in the first two runs. The Pirates wrapped up their slugging in the fourth when Rennie Stennett and Al Oliver singled and Stargell and Zisk followed with consecutive homers.
Cubs 4, Astros 3 at Houston (night game):
Heavy rains that flooded the roads around the Astrodome caused a 54-minute delay in the start of the game and merely added to the bad luck of the Astros, who lost to the Cubs, 4-3, in 10 innings for their ninth straight defeat. The Astros counted twice in the first inning on sacrifice flies by Ken Boswell and Bob Watson, but the Cubs pulled even in the third when Manny Trillo singled, Don Kessinger doubled and Jose Cardenal singled. The Astros took the lead again on a run-scoring single by Larry Milbourne in the fifth, only to have the Cubs tie the score in the ninth on singles by Andre Thornton and Rob Sperring and a sacrifice fly by Adrian Garrett. Then in the 10th, Bill Madlock doubled and, following an intentional pass to Rick Monday, Jerry Morales singled to drive in deciding run.
Dodgers 4, Expos 0 at Los Angeles (night game):
Posting his fourth shutout of the season, Andy Messersmith allowed only four hits while pitching the Dodgers to a 4-0 victory over the Expos. The crowd of 22,701 boosted the Dodgers' attendance to 1,004,550 for 27 home games, marking the earliest date that any club had passed the million mark. The Dodgers staked Messersmith to a two-run lead in the first inning on a walk, triple by Steve Garvey and single by Ron Cey. Steve Yeager singled and Rick Auerbach doubled for another run in the fourth before Jim Wynn added the final tally with a homer in the fifth.
Padres 8, Phillies 3 at San Diego (night game):
The Padres piled up 14 hits, including four singles by Enzo Hernandez, and defeated the Phillies, 8-3. Hernandez batted in two runs. Johnny Grubb also accounted for two RBIs with a pair of doubles. Wayne Twitchell, who was the Phillies' loser, failed to complete a start for the 13th straight time this season.
Giants 5, Mets 4 at San Francisco (night game):
The Giants rallied for four runs after two were out in the ninth inning to defeat the Mets, 5-4. Mike Sadek struck out before the Giants opened their rally with a single by Gary Thomasson. Derrel Thomas bounced to Jerry Koosman, who made a wild throw to second trying for a forceout. Bobby Murcer was retired on a fly for the second out, but Chris Speier singled, driving in Thomasson. Willie Montanez also singled, scoring Thomas, and when the ball got past Bob Gallagher in left field, Speier crossed the plate on the error. Bruce Miller then singled to drive in Montanez with the winning run. John Milner homered for one of the Mets' two runs in the top half of the ninth when they took a 4-1 lead.
