Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 1, Red Sox 0 at Baltimore (day game):
An unearned run in the fourth inning gave the Orioles a 1-0 victory over the Red Sox in the season opener for both clubs. Lee May reached first on shortstop Rick Burleson's throwing error, moved to third on Bobby Grich's single to center and scored when Fred Lynn's throw to Rico Petrocelli, trying to get the runner at the bag, skipped past the third baseman for an error. Jim Palmer, with relief help from Dyar Miller, recorded his third straight opening-day victory.

A's 5, Angels 2 at California (night game):
Newly acquired outfielder Don Baylor belted a homer in his Oakland debut as the A's began their campaign with a 5-2 verdict over the Angels. Baylor's blast tied the score in the fourth inning and was followed by Joe Rudi's single, Sal Bando's double and Gene Tenace's infield out, which gave the A's the go-ahead run. Mike Torrez, who came to the A's from Baltimore with Baylor, hurled the first five frames and received credit for the victory.

White Sox 4, Royals 0 at Chicago (night game):
The White Sox blanked the Royals, 4-0, as Wilbur Wood permitted only two runners to reach second. Jim Spencer provided the offense with a two-run homer in the fifth inning and three runs batted in, his first RBI getting the initial Chisox tally in the third when he walked with the bases loaded.

Rangers 2, Twins 1 at Texas (night game):
Toby Harrah's bases-loaded bloop single with two out in the 11th inning drove in the winning run as the Rangers opened their season with a 2-1 victory over the Twins. Gaylord Perry went the route for the winners, retiring the last 15 men he faced. The game-winning hit was preceded by Roy Smalley's one-out single, a fielder's choice, walk to Lenny Randle and single by Juan Beniquez. President Gerald Ford threw out the ceremonial first pitch and watched one inning of play.

Mets 3, Expos 2 at New York (day game):
Bud Harrelson's two-run fourth-inning double carried the Mets to a 3-2 opening day triumph over the Expos. The decisive blow followed an error by third baseman Larry Parrish on Del Unser's grounder and a walk to Jerry Grote. Tom Seaver, pitching his ninth consecutive season opener, was credited with the victory, his fifth against four no-decisions in season-opening assignments.

Padres 8, Braves 2 at San Diego (night game):
Randy Jones tossed a five-hitter and Johnny Grubb banged out four safeties to spark the Padres to an 8-2 victory over the Braves. One of Grubb's hits was a two-run single in the fourth which put the Padres in front, 3-0.

Giants 4, Dodgers 2 at San Francisco (day game):
Gary Matthews' two-run homer in the fourth was the big blow as the Giants topped the Dodgers, 4-2. John Montefusco, last season's N.L. Rookie of the Year, went 7 2/3 innings to gain credit for the victory. The crowd of 37,261 was the Giants' largest for a home opener in 10 years.

Cardinals 5, Cubs 0 at St. Louis (night game):
Lynn McGlothen set down the Cubs on six hits as the Cardinals opened the season with a 5-0 shutout of the Cubs. All the runs that were necessary came in the fifth inning on Mike Tyson's leadoff triple, Lou Brock's RBI infield single and singles by Lee Richard and Ted Simmons.
