Today's scores and summaries:

Orioles 5, Red Sox 1 at Baltimore (day game):
The Orioles erupted for five runs in the eighth inning to give pitcher Ken Holtzman the first victory in his new uniform. Tommy Harper got a pinch single off reliever Tom House to begin the big frame, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored the tying run on Paul Blair's double. Ken Singleton's single moved Blair to third and brought Jim Willoughby to the mound. He was greeted by Lee May's single that scored Blair and gave the home team the lead. A single by Bobby Grich, Tony Muser's double and Brooks Robinson's sacrifice fly added three more tallies.

A's 6, Angels 2 at California (day game):
Phil Garner smashed a double and triple, drove in two runs and scored another to pace the A's to a 6-2 victory over the Angels. The A's second baseman broke open the pitching duel by doubling home two runs in the fifth inning for the only hit off Nolan Ryan. The two-base hit followed walks to Sal Bando and Billy Williams. Garner then ignited a three-run rally in the eighth with a triple off rookie Paul Hartzell's first major league pitch and scored on Bert Campaneris' single.

Tigers 3, Indians 1 at Cleveland (day game):
Willie Horton smashed a two-run homer to spark the Tigers to a 3-1 verdict over the Indians before 58,478 excited fans in the season opener for both teams. The decisive blow followed Dan Meyer's one-out double in the third inning. Joe Coleman pitched six shutout innings to receive credit for the victory.

Yankees 9, Brewers 7 at Milwaukee (day game):
The Yankees rallied for five runs in the ninth inning to beat the Brewers, 9-7. Mickey Rivers began the frame with an infield hit off Jerry Augustine. Tom Murphy relieved Augustine and struck out Roy White. But Thurman Munson got an infield single and Chris Chambliss then doubled home two runs to tie the game and Lou Piniella followed with a triple to plate the go-ahead tally. Piniella came home on Rick Dempsey's infield single. The final marker scored on Willie Randolph's sacrifice fly. Don Money hit an apparent bases-loaded homer in the bottom of the frame to seemingly win the game for the Brewers but the hit was nullified when first base umpire Jim McKean ruled time had been called before the pitch was made.

Rangers 4, Twins 1 at Texas (night game):
Lenny Randle's two-run homer snapped a 1-1 tie in the fourth inning to spark the Rangers to a 4-1 verdict over the Twins. The smash came after two outs and followed Tom Grieve's leadoff single. Jim Umbarger went the route for the victory, allowing only an unearned run.

Reds 13, Astros 7 at Cincinnati (day game):
The Reds showed speed and power in thumping the Astros, 13-7. Johnny Bench and Joe Morgan hit homers as the team stole five bases. Astro starter Larry Dierker was driven to cover without retiring a batter. Bench's blow came in the second inning and was his first hit of the season. It followed a single by Ken Griffey and walk to Morgan.

Mets 1, Expos 0 at New York (day game):
Jon Matlack hurled a four-hitter as the Mets blanked the Expos, 1-0. The lone run came in the fourth inning when Bud Harrelson hit a blooper that right fielder Ellis Valentine could not catch and the ball bounced by for a triple. Felix Millan then doubled over left fielder Gary Carter's head to score Harrelson.

Pirates 5, Phillies 4 at Philadelphia (day game):
A three-base error by outfielder Ollie Brown and single by Mario Mendoza were the combination that enabled the Pirates to post a 5-4 victory over the Phillies in the season opening game for both teams. Brown dropped Richie Hebner's long fly ball with two out in the 11th inning and Mendoza then followed with a grounder up the middle. The Phils had rallied for three runs and a 4-3 lead going into the ninth but the Bucs tied it on Bill Robinson's sacrifice fly that scored Dave Parker. The throw to the plate appeared to have Parker beaten but he bowled over catcher Johnny Oates who was stunned and could not hold the ball. Oates suffered a broken collarbone on the play and will be out six to eight weeks.

Braves 3, Padres 0 at San Diego (night game):
Rowland Office hit a three-run homer to give the Braves a 3-0 victory over the Padres. Umpire John McSherry first ruled it a triple but then reversed his decision and called it a homer after the Braves disputed the original ruling. The ball landed on top of the right field wall and the blow came with Darrel Chaney, who had walked, and Phil Niekro, who had reached first on a fielder's choice, on base. During the game, Braves' expensive acquisition Andy Messersmith warmed up in the bullpen for 10 minutes.

Cubs 4, Cardinals 3 at St. Louis (day game):
Jerry Morales crossed up the St. Louis strategy with a single up the middle in the seventh inning to give the Cubs a 4-3 decision over the Cardinals. With runners on second and third and two out, the Cards elected to pass Bill Madlock intentionally and pitch to Morales. His bingle snapped a 2-2 tie. The Cards lost a chance to tie in the ninth when Hector Cruz doubled home a run with one out but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a triple.
