Today's scores and summaries:

Red Sox 6, Orioles 2 at Baltimore (day game):
After hitting a homer in the first inning, Fred Lynn doubled in the third to ignite a five-run outburst that carried the Red Sox to a 6-2 victory over the Orioles. Lynn's two-baser and singles by Jim Rice, Carlton Fisk and Carl Yastrzemski accounted for two tallies. Then, after a walk to Rico Petrocelli loaded the bases, Denny Doyle cleared the sacks with a double.

A's 10, Angels 7 at California (day game):
A two-run single by Bill North in the eighth inning gave the Athletics enough working room to clinch a 10-7 victory over the Angels and complete a sweep of the three-game series. The A's earlier scored four runs in the first, featuring a homer by Sal Bando with a man on base, and four more in the third that included a two-run double by Phil Garner.

Twins 4, Rangers 3 at Texas (day game):
A solo homer by Dan Ford in the ninth inning carried the Twins past the Rangers, 4-3, for their first victory for new manager Gene Mauch.

Reds 9, Astros 3 at Cincinnati (day game):
Pete Rose collected four hits, giving him nine in his first 16 times at bat this season, as the Reds defeated the Astros, 9-3, in a sweep of the three game series. Joe Morgan joined in with two hits for a 7-for-11 record.

Expos 7, Mets 6 at New York (day game):
Making his N. L. debut, Mickey Lolich lasted only two innings and was the loser when the Expos defeated the Mets, 7-6. Lolich got past the first inning, but then gave up three runs in the second on a single by Pete Mackanin, the pitcher's boot of a bunt, a double by Bombo Rivera and single by Jerry White. The Expos scored what proved to be their winning run off Bob Apodaca in the eighth when White batted in Rivera with a single for his second RBI of the game.

Pirates 8, Phillies 3 at Philadelphia (day game):
After Steve Carlton retired the first 10 batters, the Pirates broke loose and defeated the Phillies, 8-3. The Pirates snapped Carlton's spell with two runs in the fourth inning on a single by Manny Sanguillen, pass to Al Oliver and double by Richie Zisk. Three more runs in the fifth, including a single by Frank Taveras, triple by Rennie Stennett, single by Sanguillen, pass to Oliver and single by Willie Stargell put the game out of the Phillies' reach.

Braves 4, Padres 2 at San Diego (day game):
After driving in three runs with a pair of singles, Dick Ruthven tired in the sixth inning, but the relief pitching of Roger Moret and Pablo Torrealba enabled the Braves to trim the Padres, 4-2.

Giants 6, Dodgers 4 at San Francisco (day game):
Jumping on Mike Marshall for four runs in the eighth inning, the Giants defeated the Dodgers, 6-4, before another fine turnout of 25,659 at strikebound Candlestick Park. Marshall, coming on in relief of Doug Rau, walked Bobby Murcer and yielded the first run on singles by Gary Matthews and Willie Montanez. Chris Speier followed with a single and when Bill Buckner threw wildly back to the infield, Matthews raced home to tie the score at 4-4. Then after two out, pinch-hitter Dave Rader doubled, driving in two runs for the winning margin.

Cubs 8, Cardinals 5 at St. Louis (day game):
Breaking a tie in the ninth inning, the Cubs scored three runs and defeated the Cardinals, 8-5. A pass to Rick Monday and singles by Jose Cardenal and Bill Madlock produced the tie-breaking tally with other runs following on an error, sacrifice fly by Andre Thornton, single by Manny Trillo and sacrifice fly by Steve Swisher.
